A memory of four years together . . . which we have tried to portray ... as ... MY DAY at Coeburn High School. Now at the end of these days together, we think back . . . remembering the things we used to do and the things we used to say. Sometimes we sigh and sometimes we smile, but always we remember that these were our Days ... the Days of innocent hopes and ambitions ... the Days of happy friendships ... of books and worries mixed with laughter, fun and happiness. Yes . . . these were indeed our Days. Now as our day ends, we linger at sundown recalling its accomplishments and imperfections, knowing that in itsafterglowwill come tomorrow. It is our prayer that it will be a brighter and even more peaceful tomorrow ... one free from war and hatred among nations ... a tomorrow that those who fol- low us at Coeburn High School may also say . . . This is MY DAY ' . In the course of our day’’ here, we admired your quiet humor, amiable spirit, sincere devotion to the school, and interest in the students. These things have endeared you to the hearts of us all. ' mm Am. ?. _ pjUL-- ' ' flie ' faculty MR. A. D. BRAGG, Jr., B.A., M. A. Faced with the tremendous task of guiding us through “our day” at Coe burn High School is Mr. Bragg, one whom we have come to think of as a valued friend of “MY DAY.” We owe to him a huge debt of gratitude, not payable in money, for his years of patient listening to the difficulties that confronted us, for his mature and stable counseling in working out our problems, for his enduring understanding of our imperfections as individuals, for encouraging us when we became confused, for times when he completely ignored us which was (and we didn’t realize it then) what we needed most, for laughing with us at times and at other times literally “putting us in our places.” His wise judgment has set a standard for the pattern of “our day” at Coeburn High School, and it is with great admiration and respect that we submit this tribute to him. ' ’Coeburn doesn’t have a chance this year” were the words often heard last August in and around Coeburn--graduation had taken its toll, and prospects did not look very bright to Coaches Blessing and Parker when the candi- dates reported for practice August 15. From August 15 until Thanksgiving Day, C oeburn’ s SKULL ORCHARD lived up to its name-hard work without a let up was the order of the day and for every day thereafter. The Knights gradually became expert blockers and tacklers. Sacrifice and hard work paid great dividends as our Blue Knights won the District Crown and beat Bristol for the Championship of South- west Virginia. Tommy ‘ ‘Twinkle -toes” Bryant, Farrell Rooster” Sanders, and Clifford “Fat-boy” Suttle were selected on the Ali-District Team. Assistant Coach Parker Captain Farrell Sanders Head Coach Blessing Coaches Blessing and Parker were both newcomers to our school and the Blue Knights feel that credit goes to them for turning out the team that Coeburn High was so proud of. Cjids ' Basketball The Coeburn Blue Lassies came through the ’50-’51 season with 15 wins and one tie in the regular season play. They also won the Wise County Tournament for their fourth consecutive year. There will be four seniors who will graduate this year--two forwards and two guards. Trula Kilgore, 5’ 10” forward who has scored 2,571 points in her high school career, has also served as Captain this year. Marlene Stallard, 5’ 3” forward, has been very out- standing and effective in the scoring department. Helen Sue Kennedy, 5’ 7” guard, al- though not as tall as the usual guard, could rebound like a six-footer. Patty McArthur, 5’ 7” guard, did everytmng asked of her and was one of the best in the rebounding department. Praise should not only be given to the four above but also to Bryant, Mabrey, Smith, Edwards, and the rest who wore the Coeburn colors. One other, who had a hand in making the Blue Lassies what they were, was Coach Parker. Although a beginning coach, he showed that he knew how to turn out a winning team and retain the title of Champs for another year. The District Tournament was limited to four teams from Wise County this year and Coeburn was one of the teams representing the county. This season saw Coeburn beat Norton for the first time in recent years and they turned the trick twice. Praise is given to Coach Blessing for turn- ing out a team that was considered one of the best in the county. First Row, kneeling: Roger Catron, Kyle Adkins, Tommy Bryant, Billy Stewart, Bobby Hilton. Second Row, standing: Leslie Hayes, Kelly Wright, Frank Hillman, Robert Skeen, Dan Buchanan, Manager Joe Addington. Be j$ Basketball Coeburn, with the smallest and shortest team in the county, improved steadily as the season progressed. The remarkable play-making of Captain Tommy Bryant, the uncanny marksmanship of Bill Stewart and “All-County” Dan Buchanan, and the backboard work of Frank Hillman and Kelly Wright made Coeburn the second-best team in Wise County. In the finals of the County Tournament, our boys lost to Pound in a hard fought contest. Tft j Da j Ojj Gctioities DIRECTOR -- MR. JOHN CREGER 0.
