If one thing in this busy year were to be singled out above all others, I would want it to be that Coe has clearly defined its purpose and intention to become one ofthe nation's outstanding liberal arts colleges. Just as every individual must decide his life career, so a college must know clearly where it is going, and what will constitute the marks of distinction which it seeks. The second thing most necessary is that all who are related to the in- stitution share this vision. Right through the entire Coe family of trustees, alumni, faculty, administration, and students, there is a bond of unity and genuine enthusiasm for this future for our college. The new buildings, the campus planning, the academic program, and the support for all of these will follow in due course. As always it is c1aritY of vision, assurance of central purpose, and the spirit of unity that must come ' -t. These primary things have become assured. NOW YOU lake your place in the greater Coe family. I look forward i0 mll 'YOU Often in the years that lie ahead. We will meet in alumni g1'0'-IPS all mfr the country, and l trust you will often return to this campus which WC love' O 4 .Mca Fare ell and God pee l I - ph 'I' e ' sid t Joseph E. People from every walk of life are awakening to a new recognition of the importance of academic excellence. They will look to the nation's colleges, to college graduates and to college students to exemplify the qualities we all know should be those of the educated man or woman. whether the spring of 1959 marks the end of your Freshman or Senior year at Coe this ACORN carries the pictorial record of one of the most important institutions with which you will ever be associated. As you look forward to years ahead, whether as students or as graduates, you carry with you the congratulations and best wishes of Coe's Faculty and staff. Let us all, those who bestow as well as those who receive these salutations, renew our dedication to Coe and its central purpose. Through such dedication to truth and to virtue we may in some measure repay our Alma Mater by representing her proudly and meaningfully wherever we may be, S HENRY P. S G YMPICS ,Ni-KJ T ,fir The second annual Siglympics, sponsored loy Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, was held in October. The Siglym- pics are styled after the famous Olympic games but largely in name only. Representatives from the five sorori- ties and the independent organization participate in field events such as the rolling pin toss, egg relay, soccer ball kick, waterballoon race, three-legged race, and the egg toss. Each of the women's social organizations selects a coach from among the Alpha Sig active members. This year the organization winning the most events was the Tri Delts. Climaxing the activities was an all-school dance at which time Betty Budd was chosen Siglympic Queen. The organization T . . . . . raws oget er t ose participating in all sports and strives to promote good sportsmanship among its mem- loersand to encourage student support of Coe athletics. BASKETBALL The Coe basketball Team was in the process of rebuilding during the 1958-59 season. The start- ing lineup all season was made up of underclass- men who will be returning next year. Coach Bill Fitch was in his first season aT Coe, and it looks quite probable that Coe might be guided to the conference championship in the near future. This year the Team was an up and down one who had the potential to beat any team on a given night. The experience they gained this year should be of a great help to Them next year.
