W. S. 5. F. DRIVE JEAN Uiuce AND DoRoTnv H.AXN'K1NS VVhat does the thermometer read now? A common question heard during the week be- tween November 30 and December 6, for that was the week of the VVorld Student Service Fund Drive, sponsored by the Y. VV. C. A. and sanctioned by the VVar Council. The goal was to be 51000, and to keep all informed as to how the funds were mounting, a huge ther- mometer was erected outside of Old Blain. As the pile of money rose, so rose the mercury. Jean Urice was in charge of the drive with committees made up of Y. VV. cabinet members to take care of details. Interest was well stim- ulated over the campus by maps, pictures and posters everywhere, a skit in chapel and of course, the thermometer. On Tuesday morning, Dec. 6, the Victory bell rang loud and long to attest the fact that the goal had been reached and that we had even gone over the thousand by about 5150. S414 was contributed by the Aircrew squadrons. The average student contribution was Sl, and the average faculty, SZ. The YV. S. S. F. is a participating service of the National VVar Fund and its funds are con- tributed primarily by United States colleges, universities, preparatory and theological schools. The money is used for student war relief. It is a system of the more fortunate students helping the less fortunate ones. Now, during the war, the fund is also used for American Prisoners of VVar. It is one of the three organizations that can get help to prisoners of the Japanese. We are glad that we can do at least this much and hope we can do more to help bring this world-wide suffering to an end. Page 1 8
