PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE I-IEN I was a very iTTle boy deadly nighTshade grew in our back- yard. I was Told ThaT iTs berries were poison and ThaT I would die if I aTe Them. So I aTe The berries and have lived quiTe happily since ThaT Time. I-lowever, I know now beTTer Than I knew Then ThaT I shall die. This incidenT is here recorded To encourage you To read all The howlers in This Annual. You will die wheTher you read Them or noT. And iT is beTTer To die inTeresTed and laughing aT yourselT and oThers Than To die wiTh an unsaTisTied curiosiTy. OT course I have noT read This annual buT I have read oThers. And I know ThaT IT's a powerTul poor sermon lor annuall ThaT don'T hiT me somewhere. A proTessor oT English said, STaTe where The TourTh acT oT I-lamleT be- gins. I-lis brighT sTudenT replied, The TourTh acT begins immediaTely aTTer The Third acT closes. LiTe is ThaT way. So are college annuals. One Tollows anoTher. The Trames in which These picTures oT college liTe are placed change only a IiTTIe Trom one sTudenT generaTion To anoTher. BuT The Taces in The Trames are new. The evenTs recorded are as old as youTh and IiTe and Iove. BuT here are our names and This year's record oT our liTe and youTh and Iove. There can be no subsTiTuTe Tor ThaT in a volume so ouT oT daTe as The annual published in I933 or in The one To be pub- lished nexT year. This year has urgency and immediacy. Live now or never. One error inTo which we Tall is Thinking ThaT yesTerday was beTTer and ThaT Tomorrow will be more imporTanT Than Today. So we Try To go back To our yesTerdays and To prepare Tor our Tomorrows and TorgeT ThaT we are living Today and leaving behind in This annual and elsewhere a summary oT characTer which oThers will see and read. This year in Coe, This iunior class, This record oT our IiTe are all imporTanT now. So we shall receive and read This annual boTh reverenTIy and ioyously. I assume ThaT This annual will say li++Ie abouT a newly planned socieTy and will oTherwise make no record oT The depression. Praises be. OT course we feel The depression. A kindly Triend inquired, Air ye suT- Terin' much wiTh your rheumaTiz, Si? Si replied, WhaT else kin a Teller do wiTh IT? The answer is Tound in This book. Our depression pains are as severe as any. BuT we can and do TorgeT Them. Coe is sTrong and Tull oT The ioy oT IiTe. Our youTh is resilienT and hopeTuI. WiTness This year's iunior annual and be Thankful. I-I. M. SAGE 1935

Page I2 - DEAN OF COLLEGE HE preparaTion oT publicaTions oT a volume of This naTure is becoming increas- ingly valuable in The work oT The college. IT is a presenTaTion oT an aspecT oT educaTion which is considered so TrequenTly of Ii+TIe or no imporTance or exTra- curricular, buT should very properly be regarded as a viTal parT oT The college curriculum. EducaTion righTly conceived is, l believe, much broader Than direcTly relaTed To The work and lecTure room, laboraTory, and library. The college musT provide opporTuniTies Tor worThwhile conTacTs Tor iTs sTudenTs in a varieTy ol: relaTionships: Tor enTering The lives and ThoughTs oT oThers and Thereby enriching Their own. These conTacTs in classroom, in social acTiviTies, or in play. will enable all of us To grow in proporTion To our abiliTy and willingness To grasp and appreciaTe The lives and Thinking oT ofhers. I am sTrongly oT The opinion ThaT The colleges making ample provision Tor The rich campus experiences seT TorTh in This volume are The colleges more Tully iusTiTying Their exisTence. l.iTe is more Than The mere gaining oT daily bread, and college musT be more Than The acquisiTion OT markeTable inTormaTion. ConTacT wiTh people, growing ouT oT The varied life oT The campus is The process by which we broaden our horizons, enlarge our general knowledge, and become proTicienT in The business oT living TogeTher in muTual helpTulness. The inscripTion on a gravesTone in a ScoTch church yard records ThaT iT is Sacred To The Memory oT Tammas Jones, Who was Born a Man and Died a Grocer. No blame aTTaches To The man Tor becoming a grocer--The Tragedy is ThaT he ceased To be a man. LiTe on a college campus as porTrayed in This book is essenTial. lT serves To make and keep us human.
