Page 32 ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Alumni Association of Coe College now num- bers approximately 1500, a vast army whose potentiality cannot be measured or even estimated. Being scattered to the uttermost parts of the earth it is a difficult matter for them to keep in close touch with each other so that they might function as an organized group. Subsidiary organizations, however, have sprung up throughout the country thus greatly enhancing the work of the parent-organization. One of the recent and notable Coe Clubs is that formed in Chicago a few months ago. It is therefore clear that close cooperation between the college and a student body who are really doing things is a most vital factor in keeping the institution before those who have been separated from it by bar- riers of time and distance. They must be doing those things which will attract young men and young women of promise who when once affiliated with the college will become so engrossed in its atmosphere and activities that they will always stand four-square for those high aims and sound fundamentals for which Coe was founded and for which many sacrifices of life and labor have been made. ' We have such a condition today. The alumni are proud of Coe's remarkable growth. They are proud of a student body that maintains high standards of social and intellectual life. VVe of the Alumni Association have followed you with intense interest. The activities of your social, religious, athletic and literary organizations have contributed greatly to the interest of those of us who have gone out from our Alma Mater. We glory in the success of your athletic teams, your oratorical efforts, your debating teams, your literary achievements, your musical organi- zations and all other phases of student effort which make Coe stand out distinctively as the College of the West. Then again, the unselfishness of our student bodies of recent years has been a source of much favorable comment from those who have been watching the development of the college during its mushroom like growth. The splendid spirit of helpfulness shown during Homecoming and Commencement, the two occasions which bring alumni and former students into most intimate association with the college and its activities will be a most pleasant recollection to those whose good fortune it has been to share it. The alumni officers owe a particular debt of appreciation for this excellent spirit. During the past year the alumni have been looking forward to the inauguration of a special campaign for the establishment of a tangible memorial which would challenge the loyalty of every alumnus and former student to the limit. This campaign is to be a part of the great state and national educational endowment campaign. Already members of the alumni have contributed something like 370,000 in recent endowment drives and a committee is now at work in an e'ort to map out some definite project for which this will be a nucleus for the erection of a permanent memorial which in its service to future interests of the college would be a mark of appreciation and gratitude for what Coe has done, is doing and will do, for young men and young women who are ambitious and deserving. Many students of today will be alumni of tomorrow and therefore the cooperation of all who may read this volume is greatly desired. On behalf of the Alumni Association the president wishes to thank the editors of the ACORN for the opportunity of being represented in this annual publication. It is hoped that those who join our ranks in later years will plant their AcoRNs on useful library shelves where they grow into mighty oaks among whose leaves will be hidden many precious memories which keep alive and intensify the Coe spirit in their hearts. will will L. VV. DUNLAP, 05, President, Coe College Alumni Association.
