President Marquis The work and worth of some men, like beauty, is only skin deepg-brilliant, even dazzling on the sur- face, but with no substratum of genuineness under- neath. The administration of President Marquis is but a reflex of the character of the man himself,-practical, aggressive, substantial, genuine. Since he came to Coe a program has been maintained enough to be stirring, but conservative enough to be solid. The ma- terial results of this program can be found in the equipment and opening of the Carnegie Science Hall, in the rounding up of the funds for and the building of the Sinclair Chapel, in the renovating of the Main building, in the institution of the Summer Bible Con- ference, in the establishment of the Conservatory of Music, together with the launching of the Half Million Dollar Campaign for new endowment, of which one- half is already assured. But the achievements of the administration cannot be measured alone in dollars and cents nor in bricks, and mortar. Perhaps the most im- portant service which President Marquis has rendered the College has been in popularizing it in the city and throughout the state. Possessing the rare faculty of clothing even the more abstract truths in the garb of every-day speech, 'he never lacks for hearers. Gener- ous to the limit with his time and strength he is in con- stant demand for pulpit and platform. He never speaks without making good. In consequence the constituency of the College has been enlarged, its worth more widely recognized and its usefulness cor- respondingly increased.
