Since her freshman year of 1976, the “Bird” has compiled a 27-4 won-loss record for the regular seasons and a 6-2 mark for competition in tournaments. Dur- ing this time Coe-Brown has finished in Class A eighth in 1976, third in 1977, and an undefeated first in 1978. (For this season alone she was 15-0.) In addition to her excellent pitching, “Bird” has also been a team leader in batting statistics. For her three seasons she has compiled a .508 hitting average with 16 doubles, 9 triples, 3 homeruns, and 71 runs batted in. With her senior year ahead of her, Coe-Brown should once again be a strong power in Class A Softball. The most valuable player for the 1978 Class A State Champions was Short-stop Ines Capobianc. Combining quickness, intelligence, and ability, she led the team not only defensively, where outstanding plays were not uncommon, but offensively, where she started the explosive outbursts that the team was well known for. 50 51 SPORTS CROSSCOUNTRY Back: D. The girls team compiled a 9-10 record. The team consists of the following runners: Seniors: Debbie Smith. Juniors: Wendy Smith. Sophomores: Sharon Briggs, Elaine Champagne, and Kathy Jock. In the Class M S Cross-Country Meet, the team finished 16th out of 24 teams. This year's girls team showed vast improvement as the season progressed. The seniors, John Kelley, Chip Bates, Pete Guptill, Mark Stevens, and Keith Guptill were the backbone and leaders of this season. Utilizing a fast-break passing style of play, the team, although not as victorious, was just as exciting and, at times, was as tough an opponent as the year before. Completing the regular season with an 11-8 record, the team finished 12th in a very well- balanced Class S Division. Bob Magoon pitched 9 victories throughout the season: and with the help of a great outfield, they came all that way. There were a few close calls, some excellent plays and catches; but more important than winning, they really enjoyed the game. Coach Riel was an excellent coach for the team. He not only got along with them as a team but also individually. They put in a lot of hard work, and we believe that they should be congratulated for a job well done. They may not have won a championship title, but they were batting for it. Coach Riel brought this school a long ways because when he first came here they only had two baseball bats, and we think the baseball team did the best job possible for his last year here. The team did win two champi- onships while he was here. 66 SOFTBALL Manana Newell. Mone Mikell. Caroline Bales. Ellen Nuller. Tracy Sims. Joann Muntz. Paula Sims. Cheryl Bocck. Sandy Rollins. The 1978 softball season will be remembered for a long time around Coe-Brown Academy. For the first time in the history of the school, the girls not only went undefeated but became the State Class A Champions when on June 10 they defeated a tough Littleton team by the score of 5-4. Under the guidance of these seasoned group veterans. MVP Ines Capobianco. “Bird Bocek. Marina Hewett. Joanne Nutter. Sandy Rollins. Joanne Muntz. Ellen Nutter. Tracy Sims, and Paula Sims, the team combined talent, aggressiveness, experienced teamwork and pride to compile their perfect 19-0 season. When the opposing teams came to play, they quickly encountered a balanced group, which complemented each other not only in the field, but at the plate. Time and time again these young ladies came up with sparkling defensive play, then as they took their turn at the plate capitalized on them by outhitting. outrunning, and out- playing their opponents. With Bird. Marina. Ines. Paula, Tracy, and Ellen leading the group of returning veterans, optimism is running high for another successful season in 1979. The first big project of the year was the Children's Mini-Barnyard at the Deerfield Fair. It was a petting zoo for children, but many adults also liked it. as an estimated 30.000 people went through during the four days of the fair. The Fair Committee and community leaders had nothing but compliments for the Chapter, and a week after the fair we were invited to run the Barnyard again next year. Also. President Arthur Thurber. Jr., gave a Certificate of Appreciation to Senator Rob- ert Dole of Kansas on behalf of the Chapter and the Granite State Association. At the National Convention in Kansas City during November, the Chapter received National recognition in the National Chapter Award Program for a program of activi- ties that provided educational experiences for the members of the Chapter.
