Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1976 volume:

THE SEVENTY SIXERS I wonder What was high school like, one hundred years ago? And if the students liked to dance, or see a porno show? I wonder if they ever went to see a hockey game, or if the school house they had, then and now were just the same? If mini skirts were ever worn by, Maidens in their teens? If boys were ever seen in class, dressed in their old blue jeans? But I have read my history, and know these things, could never be. They couldn’t call each other up, upon the telephone They couldn't even have a date. Without a chaperone. Boys never had a chance to go, to Koebles for a coke, Girls were considered horrid, if they ever learned to smoke. But what amazed me most I found, in that same history book, was that the students of eighteen seventy six, were wearing our new look. 'I v Miss Nancy J. Sanborn DEDICATION We, the 1976 Graduating Class of Coe-Brown dedicate our Yearbook to Miss Nancy Sanborn. For those who have had Miss Sanborn as a teacher, it is a well known fact that efficiency is her key word. Everything has to be done in the most efficient manner, and within the walls of her classroom that is how things are done. One of Miss Sanborn’s invaluable traits is that we always know where we stand with her. There is no guessing involved. At all times you know whether you have done well or not. In this day and age of lower morals and standards. Miss Sanborn still demands high quality of student out-put and respect for teachers and peers alike. Miss Sanborn is a very capable instructor. When you have completed an assignment and she compliments it, you the student feel a definite feeling of pride and total accomplishment. This book, the Comanche, the one we love the best, would not be here without the aid of Miss Sanborn. Without her patience, time and immense effort, we would never have such a highly finished product. So, for her efficient abilities and huge reservoir of patience and strength, we proudly dedicate this book to Miss Nancy J. Sanborn. From the class of 76 a special thank-you and may happiness be with you always. n 2 It’s a full time job from September until June. J I M ft I I 3 f S 3 BACK ROW: R. King, S. Johnson Sr., H. I'm frightened, after tonight I'll have to walk the road of life alone. Without my parenti to u e as a cratch when I need one, the pebbles that Life slips into my shoe to crip- ple me and hold me back, I'll have to remove myself. Without the security of home I'm like a kite without a string. I'll go where the wind takes me, until I settle someplace that suits me. But still I wonder if I'm mature enough to govern my own life. I know I'll make mistakes everyone does, but I hope that I will not repeat any of them. The roads of life are many. To make the decision of which one Is right may be the hardest decision of my life. As I look around I see a lot of familiar faces. A lot of memories come to mind as I stand here in the Alumni Gym. The school now has an enrollment of 900 and three new buildings have been added. We are sitting here reminiscing awhile to see what the spirit of 76 has brought forth through the years. Jeff Tasker and his wife Diane have just returned from Las Vegas. Now their business is really going in the hole. Bob Kelley and Steve Rigazio will be in the Indy 500. It seems all those times being chased by the cops paid off. Barbara Pierce is now the chief of police in Northwood and is thinking of looking for a bigger job. Lookout Kojak! Bryanne McDuffee and Robin Kelley are heads of a big women's lib movement. They’re out to get Mr. Blair back for all the insults. John Gasper. Mr. Pizza himself, has shops in 40 states. There's talk he's trying to overthrow The Pizza Hut. Russell Burn and Tom Linnell are in Vienna working on a new scientific project; why the yoyo goes up and down. Mary Baker, Fran Brown, and Pat Wilkins have opened a finishing school. They're turning out some of New York's finest working girls. David Eaton is the Evil Knievel of the horse world. After one unsuccessful attempt he still claims he can jump the Grand Canyon on his rocking horse. Lurking around General Hospital is Donna Coyle. She’s head of the X-Ray Department and see'erof all things. Sue Heath and Peter Thorne are both morticians. They like the work because they don't have to talk, but then again the customers never complain. Patty Koeble is now president of Koeble Enterprises. Everyone who goes in comes out with more bologna than they bargained for. The new owners of Johnson's Dairy Bar are Jim DeMaggio and Bob Dewitt. They plan to con- vert it into a swinging singles bar. Charlene Mansfield and Linda Merrill have taken over Mrs. Dodge's job. Thanks to them, FHA is now the Future Home wreckers of America. Debbie Tasker and Vicki Colpritt have set up the Northwood Dating Service. They’re now millionaires and have computer dating centers in 24 states. Gary Hodgdon and Arthur Nutter are in the Guinesses Book for not uttering a word in 10 years, except for yippee!” at graduation. Sue Marston is Postmaster General. She's now designing a stamp that includes the complete works of Shakespeare. Robin Burklund and Bruce Cammett are at the Olympics in Switzerland. They plan to bring back a few medals and a numbered Swiss account. Back from the Navy are David O'Neal and John Bateman with the purple heart. Little does the Navy know they were wounded by a broken beer bottle. Grace Pease and Linda Lovely opened a beauty shop in Northwood. Grace hopes to earn enough to get a trade in on her Volkswagen. Jack Scribner and Randy White now play for the Red Sox. As they put it, Where would Johnston be without them?” Art Desmarais and Bill Earnshaw are in the Army and have a new slogan for the billboards, You can hussle a nurse and sometimes a WAC, don't hussle your sergeant or you'll be in the sack, (potato sack) Scott Fisher is now the Governor of New York. They call him The Coney Island Clown. Mike Bristol was second runner-up in the New Hampshire Long and Silky contest. He plans to run again next year. Sue Lesieur and Linda Allen are both lawyers. Linda says her partner has one fault, she's got to stop crying to the jury. Kerry Guptill is now the owner of Lester's Foodland. It's been said he can't seem to get the bagboy out of him. At night he's been seen riding the push carts around the parking lot. Barbara Muntz once again hit the best seller list with her new book. How 2 spel the mowst mis spelt words. Sue Abe flew in for our class reunion. She spends her winters in Hawaii, and summers in Northwood because she can't take the cold brisk wind. Eileen Hobart is now Mrs. Mitchell and working at John’s Auto Shop in Portsmouth as his secretary. 37 In long ago Arabian Nights there lived a sailor bold Who captained many a voyage of whom great tales are told. This sailor's name was Sinbad; he sailed the seven seas, He wore a sash about his waist; and boots up to his knees; He had a saber in his belt; jumped ten feet in a leap. And wrestled single-handed with sea monsters of the deep. Oh, let's pretend we went with him for many thousand miles, We're there when he discovered the four enchanted isles. To live again the ecstasy, debarking of that shore Which was the first enchanted isle. The Isle of Freshmen. One day in bright September just four short years ago, We entered Coe-Brown Academy with faces all aglow. As Freshmen we felt quite grand, important, so to speak. But when we looked around a bit we grew exceedingly meek. To help us get adjusted, Miss Sanborn and Mr. Rondeau, Were assigned as class advisers and we would be the crew. Class officers were chosen next, Diane Allen and Sue Lesieur Along with Jim and Roger they made up the favored four. A record hop was held that year. Such confusion you ne'er did see; Even though the record player broke, we all danced merrily. Then June arrived with sun and flowers, and we one and all agreed Our first short, glad, successful year was a treasured memory. When that first voyage was over, we set our sails again Along the coast to Sophomore Isle, the second in the chain. Vacation passed - a good long rest was surely good for us. We started on our sophomore year with enthusiasm plus! Mrs. Dodge and Mr. Cenatiempo were told to do their best To aid us and to guide us and we could do the rest. Election time was here again and the winners of the race. Were Robin, Pat, and Vicki, and old reliable Grace. Class meetings were quite sorted, and really a hectic ride. Cause on ideas for making money, no one could decide. We loved to dish out money for causes great and small, And our treasury was to show it, when we came again in fall. We vowed that during our next year, we all would start anew, So we sailed on to Junior Isle with a lot of things to do. As Juniors we next chose our rings with an Indian for the crest We'll always wear them proudly for the school we love the best. Our boys were quite outstanding in every branch of sport; They won us many honors on track and field and court. The studying some students did paid dividends just then, Their names went on the honor roll. What a thrill that must of been! Robichaud, Coach and Lemeris were inspiration plus, They pushed us into making our dollar signs go up. Robin, Linda, Mike and Barb went ahead and gave a hand, As class officers they really did take a mighty stand. That year was quite exciting but the best was yet to come. For Senior Isle was next in line, the one we'd been dreaming of. Class officers for that final year had quite a lot to do. But Jeff and Scott and Tom and Barb we knew could pull it through. Time flew by and we prepared to start our senior year. This most important year of all we entered without fear. Class trips were planned with loads of fun, and skip day at the beach, In hopes that graduation day we would finally reach. That year we gave a movie and kids of all sizes came, With popcorn flying and soda squirting the gym would never be the same. We selected invitations and senior pictures too, The faster that we did things the more there seemed to do. But finally graduation became a reality. And with sorrow we departed from Coe-Brown Academy. The many friends we’ve made, throughout these four short years, We will treasure for a lifetime and say goodbye in tears. The important things they taught us were valuable things to know. They were to guide us and to teach us how to live and love and grow. 39 - Barbara Muntz MOST SERIOUS Russell Burn Diane Allen CLASS WORKERS Scott Fisher Robin Burklund QUIETEST Russell Bum Susan Heath CREATIVE Barbara Muntz Roger Lewis Susanne Marston 40 Mi's life t mxA it o OPTIMIST Scott Fisher Grace Pease TIMID Arthur Nutter Charlene Mansfield MOST AMBITIOUS Robin Burklund Jeffrey Tasker FRIENDLIEST Scott Fisher Linda Allen CLASS DREAMERS Mary Baker Debbie Tasker Jack Scribner Linda Allen 41 MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Robin Burklund Bruce Cammett BEST ALL AROUND Barbara Muntz Jeffrey Tasker CLASS CLOWNS Scott Fisher Patty Koeble BEST ATHLETES Kerry Guptill Robin Burklund CLASS FLIRTS Patty Koeble Scott Fisher : Organizations “Before we put down our bets on a revolution- ary movement, we have a right to ask that it, like ours, have the broad goals of freedom and human welfare clearly before it ” Clinton Rossiter ()u yidiHioi------0$ma t A Message From the President FRESHMEN The Student Council is made up of the following 12 people: SOPHOMORES JUNIORS SENIORS Peter Guptill Brenda Hastings Kenny Glidden Laurel Jackson Jay Nault James Yeaton Anne Bailey Linda Stevens Mark Jordan Sue Lesieur Jeff Tasker Russ Bunt An election is held at the first class meeting of every year and at this time student council members are elected. The members vote on decisions for the school. The Student Council is a fund-raising organization and the money is used to benefit the school. In past years money was raised for new bleachers for the gym for school activi- ties. This year the student council is considering purchasing a portable public address system that can be used for indoor and outdoor purposes. Many more fund-raising projects are being discussed. We are now in the process of sponsoring a winter carnival. The winter carnival is made up of a number of events in which students from every class participate. In each event the winner is awarded four points, second place three points, third place two points, and last place one point. The winner of the carnival is determined by the number of points each class has at the end. The class with the highest number of points is awarded a trophy which is placed in a case in the library. In the past few years the carnival has been spon- sored by other group of students in the school. When classes are planning any event they must set a date and it must be brought to the student council for approval. The date is put on the school events calendar. The student council tries to provide things that can better the school and that cannot be obtained eas- ily any other way. The class of '76 is a very industrious group of young people. We started the yearbook last August and finished it on March 1st of this year. We found it to be a very time consuming job, however, it was well worth it as we will have the memories in the book for many years. Years from now we will all pick up our yearbooks and reminisce over old times. In many ways 1 will be sad to see the class of '76 graduate. I came to Coe-Brown four years ago and was class advisor to the present senior class. I have seen the seniors have many good times together and am sure that they will miss Coe-Brown as much as I will miss them. 53 Loveliest Link in a Chain O Kauai Loveliest Pacific Isle Arouse your sleepy hills For sacred waters will come From rainbowed skies And Kona winds shall carry Ancient chants to fall on your valleys And bless hidden temples Once again your silent canyons Shall ring with Hawaiian song And dark eyes shall dwell upon Lakas’ swaying hips Once more flared nostrils shall breathe The languid pikake Entwined in flowing hair O Kauai Oldest and most holy Seek peace in your people For we have not forgotten you One day, Polynesian hearts shall beat with hula drums And reaching arms clasp you close again Lilting voices will mingle with lonely spirits On your restless shores You shall be one with your children And nourish them with your mana And then you will yield to us Your wisdom so that We may save you from ourselves We have raped you of your beauty Surely gentle Tane Shall heed our call And your sleep will end Mandy Abe Transfer Student Kauai, Hawaii Sept. 1975 54 Classes “I hope we shall never forget that we created this nation, not to serve ourselves, but to serve man- kind.” Woodrow Wilson FIRST ROW: J. A Message From Miss Robinson This year's cheerleading squad was chosen from a field of twenty-two, so the quality was there from the start. New uniforms (when they FINALLY arrived!) were a great morale booster. A cheer- leading conference provided some insight into crowd control and techniques of leading cheers. Throughout the season, in spite of sickness (y'mean there's only gonna be FIVE of us tonight?! ?!), the cheerleaders were there, supporting the basketball teams - boys AND girls - letting them know we're with them, win or lose, because they're OUR teams. Cheerleading requires hard work and dedication, like any other sport; but unlike other sports, cheerleading is non-competitive. With no opponents to measure themselves against, their own desire for perfection must keep them working. Every time they go out on the floor, the cheerleaders speak for themselves. Their precision and spirit say, louder and clearer than anything I can write, that they are proud of themselves, their teams, and their school. 64 '' A serious moment.'' •Go, Fight. Richards, M. Ryan, P. Slone, J. Yeaton. A Message From Coach Johnson” 1975-76 Coe-Brown Basketball team started the season with four seniors - Jeff Tasker, Kerry Guptill, Scott Fisher, and Tom Lin- nell. Two juniors - Mark Ryan and Pete Stone. The remaining ones are four sophomores - Joe Sims, Jay Nault, Jim Yeaton and Russ Ryan. With the selection of Scott Fisher and Joe Sims as Co-Cap- tains the Comanches entered the season not only enthusiastic but with an excellent attitude. From the beginning, the team realized that in order to produce a winning season a great deal of hustle, desire and drive would be needed. Because of last year’s graduation, Coe-Brown found that they had a couple of good filled holes to fill in. However, we all felt that the team, playing as a team would fill in those vacant spots. From the opening game at Belmont, we found that our teams would not be the dominant force that it had been for the last two years. However, losing to a good Belmont team, gave us an indi- cation of what to expect during the year. By hustling, playing an aggressive defense and looking for the open man on offense, we knew that we would be in most every ball game during the year. Although our record does not look that impressive, one should be able to see that success of other points which are far more impor- tant in the years ahead. Behind the leadership of the seniors, who displayed excellent attitudes throughout the year, the younger members of the squad learned a great deal about desire and deter- mination, which will eventually bring more successes than could ever be witnessed on the basketball court. Undoubtedly, this team will lose much more than ability when graduation time comes in June, but hopefully they have handed it down to the underclassmen. With this attitude in mind added to the experiences of the past year the future of the Basketball program at Coe-Brown is very bright. I'd better shoot before I get called for a foul! Oh no you don't. See Mark, I told you that you could play a whole quarter without fouling. ’' Should I shoot or pass? I think I'll shoot! 67 Don't you guys know what boxing out means? A Message From Coach Morrill The J. V. Basketball team had an exciting and successful basketball team this season. One of the major reasons for being successful was the attitude of the team. Whether in practice or a game, the players were always willing to leam and did everything with a great deal of hustle and spirit. We had many wins this year, including overtime victories over Belmont and Weare, but our great- est win came over Alton, who was 13-0 at the time. 70 e Bend and stretch, reach for the sky - stand on tippie-toes. Girl’s Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball It has been four long years since the CBNA girls basketball team has been able to boast of a Victory. But the 1975-76 season was the begin- ning of a new era for the club and the school. Composed of a young and enthusiastic membership made up of Freshmen, Sophomores, and Jun- iors, the club closed the season with 2 strong wins over teams who in the past had dominated the Coe-Brown girls. The look is now to the future and the deserved victories to come. Helping this year and in future years had been the establishment of a much needed Junior Varsity team. This has not only given the opportu- nity for those who otherwise would not play, but has also given valuable experience in the basics of basketball. The power of the upcoming team is evident in the victories of the J. V. players. The future of Girl's bas- ketball is bright. 72 Coach Thayer Hurry and shoot, Pam. I'll take care of 24. We’re doing SOMETHING wrong! Give it to me, Nancy, you've got 10 points already! Oh boy! Kathy’s got the ball! Move your hand, I can't see the ball! Hurry Pam, before she trips me. 73 FRONT ROW: C. As a result of its inexperience as a team, there were more losses than victories. The most consistent point scorers for the season were Captain Thomas Linnell and sophomore John O’Connor. As a result of much dedication and hard work, the team shows strong indication that it will have many winning seasons in the near future. This year's team consisted of the following runners: Senior Captain Thomas Linnell, Junior Mark Ryan, Sophomores John O'Connor, Harold DeWitt, Freshmen Kenneth Glidden, William O'Connor, Paul Smith, David Crummy, Clay Sauls, and Leslie Magoon.
