TRAINING SKILLS It took skilled engineers and draftsmen to design and build Cody, and today in its halls walk some of tomorrow's engineers, mechanics, electricians, welders, draftsnien, and other workers in industry. They are now students at Cody preparing for their entrance into a world desiring men with a vast technical knowledge, and it is these men for whom our country has its greatest need. These boys were brought up in an industrial city, and the chances are good that they will remain in Detroit after graduation. With their talented hands and mechanical minds, they are learning their trade now. Cody is blessed with a practical arts department complete with drafting rooms and machine, electrical, wood, and welding shops. They are spacious and carry all the equipment necessary to learn the most up-to-date methods of production. Cody's vocational unit offers a home economics de- partment which guides our future honiemakers in the arts of contemporary living. Industry need skilled weldefs, and the knowledge that these boys have will prove to be xnvaluable The boys in Mr, Hinde1ang's weldmg class don goggles to do their classwork. These Cody boys are in- dulging wholeheartedly in the do-it-yourself craze and in this woodshop class they learn how to do it themselves. IN THE PRACTICAL ARTS A future Nobel prize winner may be in this group of chem students, Perhaps one will discover a way of ending the plagues of mankind. From their initial experiments with oxygen and water, chem- istry students go on to further work with sulphur, esters, metals, and other more advanced experimentation, Along with their abstract work, the junior chemists learn the practical applic - Exploring the Mysferies LABORATORY SCIENCES The science department aids students to learn more about themselves and the world they live in, Biology takes them through the evolu- tion of plants and animals from the smallest blobs of protoplasm and algae to the study of man. Chemistry students learn about the chem- ical structure of the world. Further study of matter and energy is part of the course of study in physics. Floriculture courses teach students about care of the soil, the growth and nutrition of plants, and arrangement of the blossoms. In addition to the textbook-covered subjects, Codyites learn many more things in their science classes. They learn to be careful with delicate equipment and dangerous chemicals. They learn the application of this newfound knowledge to everyday life. The study of science is a useful addition to any student's life. ation of their new skill. SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS Cody High, the newest and biggest school in Detroit, has many unique features. Drivers' training, job upgrading, office machines, florticulture, and family living are some of our special courses. Cody's auditorium is also a departure from the traditional. A suspended ceiling, air conditioning, a high-fidelity audio system, scientific acoustics, and our especially designed asbestos curtain make Cotly's auditorium both beautiful and functional. In the cafeteria, Codyites can either buy a hot lunch or eat their home-packed lunches. As modern and bright as tomorrow, the sanitary kitchen is used to prepare nourishing and delicious food. The publication of a yearbook is a Herculean task. Its completion is the finale to a year of tedious preparation. Each page was the result of many hours of intense study, research, and application by members of the staff, who are guided by faculty advisers. The talents of our group, ranging from the practical to the artistic, were exploited to the fullest. The experi- ences we have undergone can only now be fondly recalled. WVe hope our efforts have produced a book that will be well-liked by everyone. They act as intermediaries between the students and the faculty. We at Cody owe many things to the Student Council's efforts. Cody pennants, book covers, the freshmen guidebook, even our nick- name COMETS. Complaints and suggestions for improvement at Cody are also handled by the Student Council. The service assembly for those who have earned their green-and-gray rib- bons is sponsored by the Council every semester. The Sportsmanship Council helps to promote good sportsmanship between schools and within this school. They sponsor exchange days be- tween Cody and other high schools, where our Codyites get a chance to know what students from other schools are like, They also rate the sportsmanship of Cody supporters at sports events. Representatives from the Sportsmanship Councils of every high school in the city gather annually to discuss ways to further good sports- manship between schools. STUDENT COUNCIL The IMSSC Sportsmanship Flag is flown by every high school whose good sportsmanship at athletic t i t contests merits it, Cody's pennant has never been lowered in the entire 1955 sports season, Page Fifty-four STUDENT COUNCIL... Their agenda for the past year included speakers on different aspects of science. Another outside activity was a trip the club took to Great Lakes Steel. The Horizon Club, a senior division of the Campfire Girls, is a service club at Cody. The members are interested in keeping alive the ideals that they conceived while they were in the Campfire Girls. The Future Nurses, Future Teachers, and Future Engineers have the future in mind. In their clubs they learn things that will help them with their chosen professions. During the last year, the almost RNS were busy making cancer pads. They also took a trip to one of the hos- pitals. The Future Teachers showed several movies connected with the art of teaching. The Future Engineers featured speakers and trips to industrial plants. The Tri-Language League is made up of the Spanish, French, and Latin Clubs. Once a month they hold a meeting with one of the divisions providing the entertainment. The Spanish division threw a gay Mexican Hpinata party, the French group featured a tour con- ductor showing his slides of Europe, and the Latin division gave a fashion show-Roman style. The Comets found themselves faced with a rugged seven-game schedule including a non-league game with Taylor Township. The high spots of a relatively poor season included a tight game with Mumford who went on to tie for the XVest Side Championship. Our Comet defense, keyed up after hearing predictions of Murnford's easy victory, held the high-scoring Mustangs to a meager seven points. Another of our better efforts was in a non-league game with Taylor Township. The main part of this game was defensive, and as the time for the final gun approached, it looked more and more like a stalemate. Cody then took over in Taylor's territory, and a quick opener sent Cody's fullback, Larry Aguilar, off and running. The extra point was good, and the final score was seven to nothing. After a 40 to 0 drubbing from U. of D., who later became city champs, Cody tied Central in our hnal game. This concluded the season with our hnal record being one win, one tie, and five losses. This past season the Comets, who streaked along the two-mile path along with shooting stars from other high schools, were proud to see one of their number bring added glories to Cody. Bob Patrick was the streaking Comet who finished bril- liantly to place tenth in a Held of sixty in the city finals. Meeting some of the hardest high school competition in Detroit, Cody's Comets did fairly well. Captain Bill Knechtges, Owen Pelham, and senior Tom Kaznecki were the high point scorers for Cody this past season. The Comets won two meets and lost live. One particularly tight meet was lost to Southwestern. The final score was 46 to 45 - just one point from victory for our Codyites. During that meet, the Comets set new pool records in the fifty and one hundred yard free style relays. They should set and break more records next year as the team will be kept nearly intact. Girls' field hockey has always been a favorite sport with Cody girls. When Fall comes in, the girls go out-for field hockey. They cut quite a figure on the field in their green and gray uniforms. The '54 fall season was a disappointing one for the girls as they lost three games and tied two. Cody girls played their first basketball game of League com- petition this year against Red- ford. Miss Margaret Shopkin, the coach, was pleased with the way her girls handled the ball in all the four games played. Modern Dance classes, under the direction of Miss Mary Wall, have helped the girls of Cody to attain grace and agility. They have also learned how to create dances to all types of music. They gave a unique perform- ance demonstrating their tech- nique at the U. of D. and Cody basketball game. The theme of the choreography was How to Make the Varsity Basketball Team. During the whole season they lost only one meet - and that by just three points. They showed themselves to be near the top in their chosen sport by winning live meets. In the all high school girls' golf day event last fall, XVinnie Baxter, IOB, won for herself and for Cody the distinction of being low scorer. In match competition, however, the golf team didn't fare as well, winning only one out of six matches. GIRLS' GOLF TEAIVI. . . Row 12 B. Miller, L. Hall. GIRLS' SWIMMING TEAM. . . Row 1: S. Lear, E. CCJDY CADETS Our Drill Team participated in the spring of this year in the All City Drill Competition which involved close order and manual of arms. The Reserve Oiiicers' Training Corps-R.O. T.C.-is an elective subject chosen by several hundred Cody students. The advantages of this program for teen-age boys are based on aims of self-discipline and self-improvement. Subjects studied and mastered can help any boy, even if he isn't planning on following a military career. Leadership training, map reading, instrument and weapon assembly and disassembly are only a few of the variety of interesting classes offered. Different activities that a cadet may participate in are: riiie matches, drill competitions, and oth- er R.O.T.C. field meet events. The Cody Rifle Team captured third place among city high . schools in the Fifth Army P Inter-Collegiate Rifle Match. fi ,1 l 4 l 4 ii If:--QM ' ., ..ex.1L.,,,- - --T V iff- i-ir.: .
