As has been the custom at Cody High School for many years, on April first the annual Sadie Hawkins chase on the football field took place. Boys tore off across the field with girls right be- hind. Of course, the boys run as hard as they can: but when the girls band together, the boys haven't even a fighting chance. They secretly hope to get caught, but would rather die than have it known. The dance held on April eighth was the high point of the whole week. The dance was well attended and everyone had fun. Marryin' Sam, portrayed by Mr. E. E. Jeffers, did a landslide business since this year is leap year. Setting a new pace in fashions, Roxy? l O fi fl 1 ' .0 .. . , 'Y' ' 4 ' f ' - '.14... , ,gg 4 'F' .' Near the end of the year the Honor Society and Class- room Teachers were allowed to meet with the board in special meetings to air some matters which they felt needed attention. The board was very cooperative and it is hoped that much good will come from these pointed discussions. The board stated that they were pleased to see this interest in tne school on the part of the students. 64 PRINCIPAL' S MESS AGE This edition of the Cody High School BRONC is one more evidence of the growth of our school toward the goal of the comprehensive school - the effective devel- opment of each student's individual abilities. Its pages record glimpses of the multitude of activities which comprise our curriculum. The past decade has seen a multiplicity of changes. There has been a doubling of the faculty and student body. The shop, academic classroom, auditorium,gym- nasium, athletic field, parking lot, bus garage, cafete- ria and central kitchen area have all been acquired within the past ten years. The testing and guidance pro- gram has been improved and the music program strength- ened by the addition of a string program. These are a few of the changes wrought during the fabulous fifties. The challenge of the sixties will lie in meeting the demands of the space age. A true respect and admira- tion for intellectual accomplishment will raise our sights above the rewards of material prosperity. lt is myhope that the undergraduates of Cody High School will meet this challenge in full measure. Cordially yours, Dr. Harold M. Stauffer High School Principal SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE The greatest need of the individual today, in our eternal search for the ultimate, is educational balance. This, in my humble and certainly imper- fect judgement, is a result of multiple exposure to the myriad possibilities and potentialities ofa com- plex civilization. Past history has shown, in some instances at least, that academic learning, if not balanced with some active participation in fine arts, physical ex- ercise or hobbies, often leads to a faith in knowl- edge alone rather than the use of such knowledge. I believe that our tremendous assimilition of knowledge today must be balanced by Christianity first, emotional adjustment second, and last, but not least, respect for what out fellow human beings do that is worth doing. We are striving to make the educational pro- gram of the Cody Public Schools help people prog- ress in this direction with. what seems to me, marked success. Cordially yours, W. L. FOOTBALL SEA SON The Cody Broncs opened their 1959 season with two non-conference games and they looked good in both. On September 4, the Broncs took Laramie 12 to 6 at Laramie . The Broncs had 20 first downs to their 12. Total yardage was 362 for Cody to Laramle's 214. As you can see the whole team worked well as a unit. Cody lost to Scottsbluff 19-21 . The loss was due to a bad play which gave Scottsbluff the winning touchdown. According to the official, Cody's illegal substitution lost the opposing team a touchdown. Our coach, Shad Martoglio, said the Scottsbluffgame was a moral victory. The following week the Lovell Bulldogs fell to the Broncs by a score of 19-7. With the memory of Cody's California playoff victory of last year still rankling, the Worland Warriors were on the warpath when they played the Broncs . The Warriors won this game 18-6. Our team played their best but could not overcome the Warriors. Riverton was out for Cody too and the final score was 13-13. Riverton won the California playoff by gaining 21 yards. Lander was waiting to play Cody but the Broncs had one advantage and that was they were playing on the home field. With this the Broncs walked off with a 14-6 victory. Thermopolis played Cody for their homecoming, but it was a sad day for the Bobcats because they lost 29-0. October 30, was the scene of our homecoming and we were to meet the Greybull Bluffs. You can never tell what the Wyoming weather is going to do and on the night of the annual bonfire and snake dance, we had one of our winter blizzards. Due to this the game on Friday night'was postponed until Saturday afternoon, but this did not dampen the spirits of the football team. The Broncs handed Grey- bull a 45-25 defeat. This was the last game for the Senior boys on their home field and they played their hearts out for their school and fans. The last game of the season was with our traditional rivals the Powell Panthers. In bitter sub-zero weather the Broncs played a brilliant game and handed Powell their first defeat on their home field for the first time in many years. Because of team effort they played outstandingly in this game. The final standings for the 1959 football season were Worland in first place, Cody in second place and Powell in third place. All in all it was a very good season and we stood behind our team all the way. ' 1 f ,'1, Q -A I .fl y hm? 5 ,Iv , ' ' 'IFJ' X , WI ff A V' -1 1 l f- + 15 IX' ' N I - K 5 A X ' 5 s, ,V X 'Q vw. The Broncs rolled up one victory after another, with only one defeat during the sea- son's play. The Broncs opened their pre-season play by traveling to Sheridan and Newcastle to bring back two victories. The next week Rock Springs, the number one team in the state, invaded the Bronc floor. Newspapers around the state declared this the state championship game, but the Broncs fell to defeat with a score of 50-38. The regular season opened with a decisive victory over Greybull with a score of 50-26. The next night Cody went to Basin to bring back another win to add to their victory list. Week after week they rolled up victories with wins over Riverton f52-485, Lander 164-575, Worland C52-463 and Thermopolis C40-393. Now Cody and Lovell were tied for the number one spot in the Big Horn Basin conference. Cody traveled to Lovell to play the most exciting game of the season. lt was a see-saw game with both teams playing their very best, but Cody showed their team's outstanding ability by winning with a 43-40 score. The next week was a black one for the Cody fans because the Broncs fell to defeat at the hands of the Greybull Buffs. They played their hearts out, but were on the bottom end of a 49-52 score. The next night Cody came back to show their ability to win by giving Powell a 45-35 defeat. Again the Broncs started on their winning streak and added one victory after another. The Broncs gave Lander C41-385, Riverton C55-455, Worland C49-463 and Thermopolis Q52-453 defeats. The Lovell game, again, was a tussel in which Cody hardly edged Lovell by 2 points. The game proved to be a defensive game as one could tell by the score of 28-26. Cody handed Basin and Powell both defeats. The Broncs ended their season with a record of 15 wins and 1 loss. This splendid record gave the Broncs the conference championship. Cody went into the tournament the decided favorite especially since the tournament was being held in Cody. The first game was with our rivals - the Powell Panthers. The spirit was riding high, but the Broncs went down to defeat with a 38-41 score. The next day Cody was the play Riverton. But although the Broncettes and fans gave the Broncs their whole hearted support, again the Broncs lost, eliminating them from the tournament. The Bronce kept their heads up high, however, and stood behind their coach all the way. Dick Cloninger, senior member of the Bronc team, was named to the All-District and Ali- State teams named by the sports writers of the state. Also making the All-State team were Chip Ridg- way, Paul Campbell, and Curt Wilson. QQPWV ift. l Cabre gowshis gratitude. Win or lose, the students of Cody High School stood behind their team and coach. The faculty and student body were saddened by the resignation of our coach, Mr. Cabre. The students and faculty showed their appreciation for all that he had done for us by giving him a farewell assembly At the assembly he received a standing ovation, gifts from each class, the basketball team and the faculty. We are all happy to know he is coaching at Northwest Community College. The Students of Cody High School love sports and cherish sportsmanship and have tried to follow to make our school a better place to learn. 'il 4. 1591 ffl I 5. This finished the first half of the season and they had only 5 matches left to end the season. They went on to beat Lovell and Riverton and Thermopolis but fell to defeat when they met Worland. In the last meet of the season, the Cody Broncs gave Powell a defeat. In district meet held in Riverton this year, Cody placed five men and this entitled them to go to the state meet held in Laramie. Wrestling is a new and up and coming sport and in few years you will see it is just as popular as the other sports. Do as he says, Gail. 313111 l50 John clearing 5'6 in the high Jump. At district meet held in Powell, Cody tied for lst place with Riverton and with the flip of the coin Cody took 2nd place. High point man for the district meet was our own Louis Pfrangle with 31 points. This made a total of 106 points for the junior thin-clad for the year. Cody was represented at the state meet in Casper by 6 boys: Louie Pfrangle, Tom Roach, Tom Thompson, Jim Walker, David Flowers and Chip Ridgway. At the state meet Cody finished in 2nd place with Torrington first. Cody boys broke 2 records when Lottie Pfrangle ran the 100 yard dash in 9. 9 sec- onds for a new record and when the relay team ran the 880 relay in 1:34. 4 for a new record. The boys in the relay team were Pfrangle, Roach, Thompson and Flowers. Chip Ridgway was 5th in the discus throw. Pfrangle not only won the broad jump but was also second in the 220 and tied for second in the high jump. With only 5 boys graduating as seniors we should have another record-breaking team next year.
