Proffitt, Runnion, McMahan, Grooms, D. Ramsey,--Francef' Football The Fighting Cocks of C. C. H. S. opened their 1957 football season against a heavy Tornado squad at Alcoa. After a hard fought battle, the stubborn Cocks finally bowed to the tune of 20-6. The following week the Cocks, hit hard by injuries to several key players, traveled to Greeneville for a game with the highly rated Green Devi1s. The outmanned New- portians were defeated by a 37-0 score. Newport then opened a three game homestand facing Rogersville the first night. In a driving rainstorm, the Warriors slipped by the Cocks, winning 7-O. Smarting because of the three previous losses, the Big Red buried Hampton, 24-O for their first victory of the season. The hard-hitting Cocks then became the first Tennessee team to beat the rampag- ing Church Hill Panthers since 1955. Coach Bo Brummett's charges unleashed a devastating passing attack to upset the visitors, 26-13. Fresh from a two-game winning streak at home, the Gamecocks then traveled to Sevierville for a game with the Smoky 70 QQ i C. lones. Third Row: B. Brummett, Coach: MorreH, Manager: L. After a hard fought contest on a wet, slippery field, the game ended in a 6-6 deadlock. Furious at having their winning streak broken, Newport then humbled the Carter Green Hornets, 38-14, with ct second half touchdown spiurge. The next week was when the time when the flu struck C.C.H.S. With practically the entire football team weakened from the disease, the Cocks bowed to Morristown, 34-6, but not before putting up a gallant battle for three quarters. After recovering from the flu, Newport drubbed an underdog Gatlinburg eleven, 40-7, blowing a close game apart in the second half. Next the Fighting Cocks invaded Ieffer- son City for a game with the undefeated Iefferson High Elks The Cocks put up a gallant battle before falling to a racehorse lefferson offense, 34-6. Homecoming at Newport was spoiled by both a wet field and the Maryville Red Rebels. ln a rough hard-hitting game the Cocks finally bowed out by a 14-6 margin.
