After a hard fought battle, the stubborn Cocks finally bowed to the tune of 20-6. The following week the Cocks, hit hard by injuries to several key players, traveled to Greeneville for a game with the highly rated Green Devi1s. The outmanned New- portians were defeated by a 37-0 score. Newport then opened a three game homestand facing Rogersville the first night. In a driving rainstorm, the Warriors slipped by the Cocks, winning 7-O. Smarting because of the three previous losses, the Big Red buried Hampton, 24-O for their first victory of the season. The hard-hitting Cocks then became the first Tennessee team to beat the rampag- ing Church Hill Panthers since 1955. Coach Bo Brummett's charges unleashed a devastating passing attack to upset the visitors, 26-13. Fresh from a two-game winning streak at home, the Gamecocks then traveled to Sevierville for a game with the Smoky 70 QQ i C. lones. Third Row: B. Brummett, Coach: MorreH, Manager: L. The next week was when the time when the flu struck C.C.H.S. With practically the entire football team weakened from the disease, the Cocks bowed to Morristown, 34-6, but not before putting up a gallant battle for three quarters. After recovering from the flu, Newport drubbed an underdog Gatlinburg eleven, 40-7, blowing a close game apart in the second half. Next the Fighting Cocks invaded Ieffer- son City for a game with the undefeated Iefferson High Elks The Cocks put up a gallant battle before falling to a racehorse lefferson offense, 34-6.
