The events included in this book are important only to those to whom they hap- pened but it is vitally important that we remember them. They have happened to each of us, you know, and they will never happen again except in our memories. And only by keeping these memories can we keep from losing our identity as individuals among the great mass of humanity which inhabits the globe. The Staff of the '59 Cardinal sincerely hopes that you will keep this book through the years to give vitality to the time-shadowed memories that such a small part of civilization shares with you. David Ru nkel Editor 3 John Edward Varndell 1941-l 953 Dedication It is with deepest gratitude that we dedicate this i959 edition of The Cardinal to Mr. Leon Sobilo, career and personal guidance counselor to the students of Cochranton High School. Mr. Sobilo's help to the members of the class of 1959, particularly, during the last several years, will have a tremendously far-reaching eFFect on all our lives. His frank interpretation of the tests he has given us and his directness, knowledge of the situation, and encouragement lalong with his limited patiencel in personal interviews have helped us immeasurably to know ourselves, our potentials and our obligations to ourselves, our family and to society.
