GRADES 5 AND 6 On the morning of September 5 mne boys and 20 girls met in Room I08 and became known as Grade 5 and 6 with lVl1ss l-loman as their teacher Since then two boys and two girls have been enrolled and one girl and one boy have moved from the district Room 108 became active with preparations for a display and float for the Community Fair The float was Food Fights for Freedom and won 2nd place While the display was one on Egypt and carried first honor ln October we began an Arithmetic Contest Arithmetic Bugs Busy Bees The wmners are to be the recipients of a Box Lunch in the spring We also had a Halloween Party during which time we did many of the proverbial stunts of Hallowe en mcludmg borrlng for apples and a treasure hunt An activity on the Civilization of the Two Rivers was carried out We made a large map to scale of flour salt and water and we had a sand table project of an Arab home Open house was held in November We had a part in the program and served coffee and wafers in our room We gave as a momento the We had a delightful time getting ready for Christmas For ourselves we made a modern snow covered lolly pop Christmas tree For the soldiers in the hospitals we rnade favors for their trays and silhouettes for their windows We enjoyed an activity on the Med Sea Countries During which work we drew maps to scale made booklets etc Our part ln the Thursday Assembly was a Washington Program We shared it with Grades l and 2 Many mothers and friends visited our room afterwards where we gave five short plays New book shelves new books plants and an aquarium add to our room Most of us have a hobby that we enjoy doing after school hours trapping fishing selling collecting baseball sewing and hiking Our champion saleslady IS Connie Peterson collector Phoebe Gregory trapper Dick PeterSon money maker Jack Buzzard speller Phyllis Work Arithmetic Bob Schall artist Phoebe Gregory and wrlter Sally Gordon . . . . ,. . . 1 . . Adapted to our ages, we called them: C J - - , C l , C 5 '- , C P ' ' , GRADES 1 AND 2 Perhaps you have forgotten how momentous is the first day of school for all beginners We had twelve first graders this year Some of them are so small they get lost from sight in the halls The first two weeks of school were taken up with preparation for the Fair We really worked hard and won a second and a third prize for our table and float Then we planned a Hallowe en party and play and invited our mothers to come to the party play and invited our mothers We had reindeer and Santa and a beautlful big tree As soon as the first semester was over we began plannm for an assembly program We were to have a program with Fifth and Sixth Grade We planned a George Washington play depicting the life of our first presl dent from boyhood to the White House ln May we will have a May Day program, and then a picnic on the last day of school The next big party was our Christmas exchange.
