I: M: 'gurut '- 1 'cm IQi'Iz 'tl I' f :un '. . , w , , I ,. , I z ,f ' E ' ' ' .'z ' 2 7 l' ' ' ' Qcfwcfces Q-,oHISo Gfzganizafions an Y Y SPORTS FOR 1941 42 by Joe York Thls year s sports actlvltles were wlder to some extent than ln prevlous years ln the latter part of September soccer season got under way wlth the boys worklng out after school on the ball fleld Thls year s season was a fol lowthrough of other years Our soccer team has seen very few defeats smce we started to develop xt five years ago The team flnlshed the season wlth 6 vxctorles to their credlt and only l defeat We hope that we can contlnu with such a record During the soc er season the boys health class played occer Shortly before the end of occer cason C oach Nelson had some of the boys try out for the Phys c1l l-'ltness Relay run He entered I2 boys ln the relav These boys carried a baton for a distance of 4 mlles along the course of the run between Atlantlc and breenvllle This was new IH the sports schedule thls year and was sponsored by the Pennsvlxanla Athletlc Assoclatlon The run began 1n Erxe Pennsylvama and follou ed a course through to Pittsburgh from there to Phlladelph a lt wa scheduled to last I4 days with relay run nmg from 8 a m every day except Sundays The baton concealed an Armls t1ce Day message to be delivered 1n Phlladelphxa at I0 45 on Armlstlce Day When the weather became too bad for outslde sports the health classes came lndoors for lntermural basketball The basketball team started to work out early ln November Thev opened the season at Saegertown on December Ridgeway center and Anderson and Stelnbrenner at guard lm Glll was elected captaln for the year and the season ended wlth 8 VlCtOf1CS against I4 losses for the team The flrst Trl County League game was played at Youn s ville Although the teams record does not show 1' our boys played very good ball most of the season Probably the most thrlllmg game of the season was the game with Rocky Grove played on the home floor Our team showed some very smooth ball handllng and teamwork throughout the game We topped them wlth a cor of 45 27 Wlth every ball game cheer leaders and cheer were ID evidence Neva Poly Carol West and oe York have led the fans for three years now 'lhey will graduate thus sprung and C H Q vull have to look for a new set They went through the season wlth cart wheels and somersalts and everythlng they thought would IIISPITF' their followers to glve the team support If next year s cheerleaders are as successful the old school s rafters should rlng out mlghtv cheers agaln The girls sports thxs year lncludecl basketball volleyball and mush ball The wmnlng team ln basket ball lncluded Neva Poly captain Helen Bean Am' Moyer lVlae Shlllmg Arlene Cauvel and Mary Hayden After basketball the volley ball net was put up and lntermural volley ball for the boys health class was started Coach Nelson also sent a team to the Trl County play offs at TllUSVlllP Thls gave the boys a chance to see how the game was played and xt wlll help them form a better team next year Baseball gloves began to make an appearance ln the early part of April and the team started to work sew eral weeks later The openlng game was wlth Cranberry on the home fleld on Aprll 20 We wlsh the team a very success ful season Thls flI'llShCS the sports for 41 42 Let s hope for a blg 42 43 season B , . .
