COMDESRON 33 CAPTAIN JOSEPH METCALF III Captain Joseph METCALF III, a native of Holyoke, Massachusetts, attended the U. S. Naval Academy and graduated in the class of 1951. His first assignment was a three year tour on the destroyer WATTS (DD-567) where he served as Elec- trical, Damage Control. Engineer Officer and ultimately Operations Officer. In July 1954 he reported to the Staff of Cruiser Division SIX as Gunnery and Missile Officer. His next tour in June 1956 was as instructor in the Depart- ment of Ordnance and Gunnery, U. S. Naval Academy. His next assignment was as Commanding Officer of the USS KING COUNTY (AG-157). a converted LST which was configured to fire the REGULUS II guided missile. A tour in the Bureau of Naval Personnel followed where he was assigned to the Officer Promotion Plans Desk. In 1962 Captain METCALF attended the U. S. Postgraduate School in the Operations Analysis Curriculum. He returned to sea in July of 1964 as the Commanding Officer of the YOKOSUKA based USS WESTCHESTER COUNTY (LST-1167). The following June he was assigned the ad- ditional duty of Commander Landing Ship Division 92. During this period the WESTCHESTER COUNTY earned the Meritorious Unit Commendation for its role in Vietnam operations with Landing Ship Squadron NINE. Captain METCALF received the Bronze Star with Combat V for his part in Amphibious Marine Landings in support of the Republic of Vietnam. In Januury 1966 he reported to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Advanced Research and Development Center, Bangkok, Thailand. During this tour he received the Legion of Merit for his development of a surveillance system for the upper reaches of the Mekong River. In October 1968 he reported to the USS BRADLEY (DE-1041) as Commanding Officer. His next assignment was as a student in the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He reported in 1971 to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations for a three year tour as Head of the Planning Branch in the Program Planning Division. In September 1974, Captain METCALF returned to the Pacific Cruiser-Destroyer Force and took command of the Pearl Harbor based Destroyer Squadron THIRTY- THREE. On 1 October 1974. he sailed with his squadron ships to the Western Pacific for an eventual and successful seven and one-half month cruise with the SEVENTH Fleet. This tour was highlighted by a significant Indian Ocean excursion in November 1974 to participate in a multi- national CENTO exercise and performance of duty as CTG 76.3, Commander Area Defense and Naval Gunfire Sup- port Force during the amphibious rescue and evacuation of Americans from South Vietnam in April-May 1975. Captain METCALF is married to the former Ruth Daniels of Holyoke, Massachusetts.

COMMANDING OFFICER Biography of Commander Joseph E. BOLAND, Jr., USN Commander Boland is a native of Yonkers, New York and graduated from Manhattan College in Riverdale. New York. He was commissioned at Officer Can- didate School in April 1959. His duty assignments include First Lieutenant and later Operations Officer. USS NOTABLE (MSO- 460); Operations Department Instructor at Officer Candidate School; Destroyer School Department Head Course; Engineer Officer, USS BUCHANAN (DDG-14); Commanding Officer, USS SAMOSET (ATA- 190); Bureau of Naval Personnel; Comman- ding Officer, USS PIVOT (MSO-463). and Executive Officer, USS JOSEPH STRAUSS (DDG-16), He assumed command of USS COCHRANE (DDG-21)on 12 June 1973. Commander BOLAND is married to the former Rebecca Lea THOMAS of Lynchburg, Virginia. The BOLANDS have one son, Joseph Patrick.
