Atkinson s big red aggregation In their quest for the Arizona State Junior College Baseball Title the Cochise Apaches fell short of their goal and lost out to Mesa Community College in their best of five series. To obtain their playoff berth against Mesa the Apaches won their first state division title in baseball placing ahead of Arizona Western Central Arizona and Eastern Arizona Colleges. Tl'e Apaches fielded an experienced team since seven of the starting nine were sophomores. Joe Bob Cole Tom Airington Jesus Franco Herb Von Hagen Ken Kreier Tom Mutz and Charles Young all sophomores and Paul Beasch and Paul Stricker freshmen qualified for starting berths on the squad. Joe Bob Cole and Tom Airington were unanimous selections for- first team all-state. Herb Von Hagen and Ken Kreier made second team all-state while Tom Mutz received honorable mention. In the state playoffs against Mesa, it seemed as though Cochise was headed for its first national playoff berth, but Mesa squelched their chances by taking three straight games after dropping the opener. But one bright ray has emanated from this season. It evinced that Cochise could compete with the big-city teams and beat top ranked teams in the nation fMesa ranked No. 1 and Glendale No. 65. They played good baseball under pressure. When the heat was on the A- paches got tough. The team's motto, We Never Die, will inspire the teams that will follow the footsteps of a winner.
