Guests express a hope for country and individual Although freedom of speech has been worked to death again and again over the years, Americans still don't ap- preciate it as much as possible. Like so many other things in today's modern world, freedom of speech is taken for granted by a majority of United States citizens. This right of free expression, the basic bastion of liber- ty, makes our country strong. Every individual American realizing its importance must work to keep our home a democracy. To do this, we must keep thought free. In our have-too-much-of-everything country, we overlook the possibility that our freedoms and pleasures could someday be taken away from us. Protection is the key to saving what we want most. The best way to a- chieve this is to get people into our government systems who realize the importance of keeping the United States a great land, people who will put forth every effort and sacrifice needed. Unfortunately, this necessarily thorough and sweeping turnover in government cannot be accomplished with one fell swoop. What with the many officials our govern- ment has, a person might think it is the most democratic form possible. Let's hope not. There are too many power-seekers in our government today. Maybe they don't start out that way, but they often find, after they promise themselves into office, that they are intoxicated with power. This seems to be worse than having too little power. What can be done about it? How will the voters in this country know, beforehand, who will be the most honest and enterprising peace-seekers? There are many positions to fill. Are there that many honest, dedicated peace-seek- ers in our wonderful country? Let's hope so. Karen Brooks An individual should have several goals in mind be- fore he settles down. Not only will it help him broaden his outlook on life, but it will also help him choose a vo- cation he will genuinely like above all others. Without several goals to select from, a man's mind is more or less limited to one destiny. This usually makes him ignorant about others. This is fine for the man who thinks all news is bad news and wants to shut the rest of the world out of his mind, but I would venture to guess the majority of individuals do not feel this way. It seems that in our day and age you almost have to have at least two goals in mind due to the fact that many fields have an overabundarice of people wanting to work at specific jobs. If the field you choose does have this problem, chances are it would be very difficult for you to land ajob. It is also sad when someone sets his mind toward one goal, studies several years to master it and finds that after he's on the job the work is much less rewarding than he thought it would be. Where are you to turn if no other goals have been considered in your life? When you read the biographies of many famous and prominent men who live or have lived in our society, you will discover that almost all of them have had several professions be- fore they found which one really suited them best. Unless you are definitely sure about what you want to be, or more important yet, sure of what you are and what you want, you should broaden your horizons by investi-H gating several fields.
