Mr. Mel Engelstad, wanted for commercials Maybe there's some value in TV commercials after all. Mr. Mel Engelstad, business teacher, reminisces, From my office between classes one day, I could hear mixed voices and laughter in the adjoining classroomg but I didn't pay any particular attention. Upon walking out and joining the assemblage of stu- dents, there was a noticeable lessening of conversation and laughter, to the point of unbelievable silence ema- nating from sagging, open mouths. Then came the explanation! Students, turned sleuths for thejob at hand, were trying to pinpoint the one among them whose presence was so profusely filling the atmos- phere with fragrant oriental perfume. During CC's first years, a strict attendance and limited cut policy were enforced. When students did skip a class they felt they were a bit smarter than the professor. It was unusual when 40fZa of Mr. I-luncovsky's afternoon class failed to attend one day. No one wanted to divulge any information about the ab- sentees. Somehow, someone dropped a clue about a happen- ing in the SU. I assigned some busy work and left to investigate. I entered through the backdoor where the entrance was elevated. One of my students' noticed my presence and by whispers, nudges and panic-stricken glances the signal passed down the line. Almost as a body they pushed back their chairs, dashed for the doors and held a heated footrace for the classroom. I returned at a more leisurely pace so I could wipe the grin from my face and be properly indignant upon en- tering the classroomv college community When the California Cuties cage aggregation invaded Apache Stronghold for a joust with the CC faculty, Gerry Bequette be- came the victim of an all-court, all-gym zone press.
