Dear C. U Denver, Pennsylvania 1966 Ko-Ka-Le-Ko Co -Editors Sharon Ney Gene Leed Business Manager Bonnie Petery Photography Editor' Phyllis Enck Layout Editor Carol Hess Literary Editor Judy Fasnacht Sports Editor Bill McQuate Art Editor Penny Palsgrove r A dvisor A. Darlene Boggs Photographer Amos Marti H ,,,, orewora' Less than six years ago, the class of '66 opened the doors of Cocalico Union, and now as this year nears its end we will close these same doors behind us. In spite of this, however, we cannot shut out the memories of all the happy hours We spent at dear C.U.--especially those select hours we, as yearbook staff mem- bers, spent in preparing this yearbook. The preparation of this annual could not have been completed without the help and cooperation of many people. Two of these people are our advisor, Mrs. Boggs, and our photographer, Mr. Martin. We would also like to thank the yearbook staff, fellow seniors, administrators, patrons, and yearbook subscribers. We have found that the preparation of a yearbook is a group project in which full cooperation is needed from everyone associated with the school. We, the yearbook staff, have learned to work with each other in order to publish the '66 KO-KA-LE-KO. Co-editors Sharon Ney Gene Leed 4 Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1966, would like to dedicate our yearbook to the fac- ulty of Cocalico Union High School. These instructors have given us knowledge and understanding. They have guided us through the years contributing to our mental, physical, and emotional growth through their sincere criticism and general suggestions. Each in his own way has opened many doors of opportunity for us as students. Without their guidance and assistance we would never have succeeded in the many endeavors we attained. We wish to express our deepest gratitude to you, the faculty of Cocalico Union. at f as 1. V1 'With ,'. Besides their usual administrative duties, they attended many professional meetings of regional, state, and national importance. Mr. Weaver also attended the National Principal's Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. The faculty members of Cocalico Union have unselfishly divided their time between regular school classes and extracurricular activities. For the F.T.A. Assembly, several of the teachers formeda Faculty Band to entertain the student body. An annual student-faculty basketball game promoted good sportsmanship among the students and the faculty. To encourage better parent- teacher relationships, a new project of Back To School Night was established. The Cocalico Union teachers also observed American Education Week, Teachers' Institutes, and an annual Faculty Picnic. 7 School Board: STANDING-Mr. Paul Grebinger, Dr. Edward Kalbach, Rev. Mg ,.. .,k. W To the Class of 1966: Now that your public schooling is coming to a close, you might ask yourselves if you are better today than you were yesterday. Did you keep the faith which was given by your parents, teachers, and forefathers who have striven so nobly to preserve this heritage or did you allow it to be pushed aside by temptations that are ever present? Your very existence demands that each of you carry your fair share of duty to your neighbor, to your country, and to God. Let each of you put forth that extra effort to uphold the faith of your elders for the sake of a better world. Every day, ask for the strength to meet the chal- lenges of life, and to love thy Neighbor as thy self. Best wishes for the future. Homer P. Although we, the stu- dents, do not meet with them inthe normal classroom situation, they are still an important part of our education. While the selection of home eco- nomics or art has further developed our interests and talent, the selection of driver education has promoted respon- sibility and safety on our highways. When we have needed general information con- cerning the school, the secretary has helped us. We have often received medi- cal attention fromthe school nurse. The experience of the librarian has given us invaluable aid in our research projects. However, all people go thru a series of beginnings and endings. Your first six years are spent at home. The second phase starts with the first grade. A new phase begins with the seventh grade. This is when I made my first contact with your class. You have now graduated. The remaining phases of life for you are getting a job, starting a home, or preparing for college. My hope is that you will start this last phase of life with the eagerness, vitality, freshness of mind, and spirit that you exhibited as seventh graders and which made my association with you such a memorable and pleasant one. In our sophomore year the class checked coats at basketball games, received our class jackets and held our first dance, Winter Wonderland. Dan Lytle, Vicki Gross, Gloria Hurst, and Jane Oberholtzer led the class in projects in their sophomore year. During the junior year our class officers were Dan Lytle, Vicki Gross, Gloria Hurst, and Sue Stewart. The class received rings, held the dance, Christmas in Toyland , presented the play, More Than Welcome , and hosted the Junior-Senior Prom, Some Enchanted Evening. In September of 1965 our class returned to C. U. for our final and most unforgettable year. During this year the class elected Vicki Gross, Janice Imhoff, Gloria Hurst, and Dawn Martin. We staffed the refreshment stands at football and basketball games, held a sub sale, sponsored the annual Homecoming Dance, presented the play, Teahouse of the August Moon, and traveled to New York and Washington. Our senior year, however, has been the year which has meant the most to all of us. As we looked back, we have remembered all the fun, the heartaches, the excitements, and the happiness of this, our best year. With our advisor, Mr. Gensemer, the class held many meaningful meetings. Most outstanding of our recollections are refreshment stands at football and basketball games, anxieties of work- ing on committees for dances, the great play practices and the suspense of presenting the play, and the prom. Still most of us found time to sign senior pictures, make plans for the future, whether it was applying at colleges, seeking a job, or entering the armed services. Ordering commencement announcements and being measured for caps and gowns made graduation seem very close. The class, represented by the colors charcoal grey and powder blue, chose a white rose tipped blue as the class flower. Then give to the world the best you have , was our inspiring motto. To some members of the class, graduation was a joyous event, to some it was tearful. To each senior, however, it marked not only the end of their high school days but the beginning of a new venture in life. 59 55' We ek T, More Than Welcome As their Junior Class Play, the class of 1966 presented the comedy More Than Welcome, which proved to be one of the major accomplishments of the class. 60 . , 5- ,.-,lf ' 4 Q' swf' ROW 1: Donna Gunselman, Donna Johnson, Sharon Ney. An exciting event of the junior year is choosing the class rings. The colors of the Junior class are navy blue and white. It helps to develop a well-rounded personality. Participation in sports teaches a person good sportsmanship as well as co-oper- ation with others. Athletics is hard work. It requires self-discipline, sacrifice, and agreat deal of time on the part of students, managers, and coaches. Cocalico is priviledged to have good athletic fields and equipment. They are kept in good condition by the diligent work of the custodian staff. This year sports at Cocalico has had an average season. Sports seemed to start slowly, but as the year advanced, sports progressed. The coaches of all the teams were to be commended for the fine job they did for the school and for the individual athlete. Because of the coaches' effort, the athletes have gained greatly. Though sports were not at their highest, we must remember that whether you win or lose, the important thing is how you play the game. 85 D L.,V VL,AA 5 2 '..- 5 37 4- iq 9 gf Mr. Stauffer, Headcoachg Mr. Lauris and Mr, Henry, Assistant Coaches. , Co-Captains: Dennis Bowman and James Stricker. Through these activities we were able to work and become familiar with one another. Clubs, which met every Wednesday, brought us together with students who shared the same interests. The band rehearsals, under the direction of Mr. Floyd Sweigart, enabled those who partici- pated to broaden their outlook in the musical field. After many hours of hard work, the chorus, directed by Mr. William Gates, presented the traditional Christmas and Easter assemblies. They also participated in the spring Night of Music. Many an uneventful Saturday night was enlightened by the school dances sponsored by the various classes. Through all these activities we were able to spend many happy hours at C. Sweigart I K L rczducztion After twelve years of homework, extra activities, and many happy hours together, the class of 1966 received their diplomas and became alumni. For many years, we had anticipated this event. Now that it was here, the emotions were mixed, some cried, some laughed, some were glad, and others were doubtful. They realized that they would never again be together as a group. Many had already decided what they would do. They would become the doctors, the lawyers, the teachers, the homemakers, the secretaries, the mechanics - the citizens of tomorrow. The school they were to leave now, would never leave their minds, but linger there forever. This was their night and they had made the best of it. Now they would step into tomorrow.
