Smith, Supervising Principal To the Class of 1965: I wish to congratulate you on your graduation from Cocalico Union High School, to extendto you my very best wishes for suc- cess in your chosen field, and to thank you for your fine coopera- tion here. Today, broad political, social, and economic forces tend to affect our lives more than immediate and directly controllable factors. The direction these take will be shaped by the attitudes of people, particularly toward such values as freedom and justice. The future of our country depends, more than ever before, onthe willingness of you, our educated men and women, to accept a responsibility for the common welfare . . . be it local, state, or national. Although it has not been my privilege to know each of you intimately, my observation of your active concern and respect for the rights of all students, and your active participation in school government, leads me to believe that you are ready and willing to accept the unusual challenges the reality of atomic power, automation, space exploration, political and social unrest will bring to you. May you have a faith that still shines like a light midst the encircling gloom. But only by striving to know God can you retainthe freedom to criticize, guide and uplift mankind. May your reverence for human life, sensitivity to spiritual values, faith in man's ethical discernment, the acquisition to competency to interpret and appreciate living help emancipate each of us for a richer and fuller life. Flinchbaugh Jr. High Principal To the Class of 1965: A student who is graduating may think his need and interest in education has been terminated. This concept should not prevail. Education should be the concern of all citizens regardless of age, status or position. An alumni should be concerned with continuing education for himself, about local education for students of all ages in his community, and to be informed of all issues in a democracy. An informed citizen is the keystone to a dem- ocracy. Informed citizens are educated citizens. E Ax tm fu 'al l l THE HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1965 as sophomores . . . 1962-1963 In September we came back to school again. From our masses we elected Rick Kriebel, President, Brenda Witman, Vice- President, Marilyn Adams, Treasurer, Doreen Bates, Secretary. Under Mr. Chester Sweigart, our advisor, we chose mint green and charcoal gray as our class colors for our school jackets which we received in November. In November we sponsored our only dance of the year: The Plymouth Rock. In this year we also sponsored coat-checks at home basketball games as a means of increasing our funds. Atthe climax of our sophomore school year some of us left on an exciting camping trip to Ocean City, Maryland. This was the result of various sub sales. as juniors . . . 1963-1964 In this year we were led by Randy Trostle, President, Connie Burkholder, Vice- President, Terry Troupe, Treasurer, Doreen Bates, Secretary, under the advisorship of Miss Joan Kautz. In this year the Junior class sponsored two dances: The Sno-Ball in December and the Dance of the Emerald Isle in March. As junior dramatists we presented THE DESK SET starring Kitty Boose, Pam Nies, Glenn Redcay, and Kenny Keffer. This year we received our class rings. We each had various stones to pick from, and each setting was ornated with 2 eagles, 1965, and Cocalico Union High School. Our year ended with our sponsorship of the Junior-Senior prom, Evening in Paris. The gym was transformed into a Parisian setting with the help of twinkle lights, awnings, streetlights, a fountain, many flowers, and a huge backdrop depicting the Eiffel Tower. as Seniors . . . 1964-1965 By this time we were whittled down to 133. Under the advisorship of Mr. Ralph Lutz we elected Randy Trostle, President, Terry Gerhart, Vice-President, Marilyn Adams, Treasurer, Doreen Bates, Secretary. As seniors we faced many new decisions, but for which we received bountiful rewards. Our treasury was augmented by the senior refreshment stand at home football and basketball games. The Senior class also sponsored The Homecoming Dance at which Doreen Bates, Homecoming Queen, reigned. This year we chose our class flower -- a green tipped carnation -- and our class motto -- Great thoughts come from the heart by way of the mind. The senior thespians presented THE CHALK GARDEN starring Jayne Sweigart, Pam Nies, Neil Sweigart, and Glenn Redcay and directed by J. Daniel Brensinger. On March 26 the Senior class journeyed to Washington, D. C. for the day. We visited many places among which included the Capitol, the White House, the Smithsonian Institute, and Arlington Cemetery. We ended the day by dining at the Casino Royal. On May 7 we again journeyed from Cocalico Union to an exciting rainy day at the New York World's Fair where we spent the day wandering in and out of various exhibits. 56 On May 28 we were entertained by the juniors at the prom very appropriately called Some Enchanted Evening. Here from among us Doreen Bates and Randy Trostle were crowned queen and king respectively. Our school year drew closer to the end when on June 6 Reverend Hess spoke to us at Baccalaureate services in the auditorium. The school year finally ended on June 9, 1965. As rewards for twelve years work we each received our prize diploma and one class flower. This evening was highlighted by three student speakers and our guest speaker Mr. Furman Bailey. So drew the end of our high school years and the history of the class of 1965. Great thoughts come from the heart by way of the mind 57 QW gi ,i -. ff Jw 33'-aria fans L., 1 .QE I 5 5 H Q , 5 , K. z D-hw, Q x u if r Ha. 4 -r .sf X 'Bl' 'fi il.
