Although we, the class of '64, will always remember C.U. as the corner- stone of our youth, we're all looking forward to a bright and prosperous future as loyal citizens of our great democracy. mg, ,gk gk Q i 3 i 2 , if if Q V 3 The Senior Class of Cocalico Union High School dedicates the 1964 KO Ko Le Ko to- Youth of Today-Citizens of Tomorrow. Youth of today-citizens of tomorrow, these six words by implication alone include not only school students but embraces the entire youth of our country. The destiny of this vast portion of the population is tied irrevocably to the destiny of our nation. The mediocrity or greatness, success or failure of each, go hand in hand. About to take an important step toward adulthood and forced by the process to increase the procedure of reasoning for ourselves, we are not the completely fun-loving, carefree juvenile society advertises us to be. Tomorrow promises much, but what we do with it depends solely on the tangibility of our dreams. Assuming the role of citizen with its myriad responsibilities as well as its privileges, we must try to understand a society molded by the ideals of people difficult to understand or appreciate. To comprehend and fulfill our debt to this society, we must attempt to find ourselves and regulate our destiny by broadening our outlooks and maintaining faith in God, in mankind, and in this great country. The requirements are many, butwe can meet them because we are young, and willing to try. 6 Sqafnzhzkfrafzbn chef gacuffy ,, . ,, xgvwf f gy To The Class of 1964: Your yearbook mirrors the events of this school year. In it we may see the pageant of the year as it swept by day by day and event by event. History will record this year as one of major importance with the presidential tragedy, world disturbances and integration problems in our own country. You will think of it as the year in which you reached another rung on the ladder of life. In your theme Today's Youth is Tomorrow's Citizen you have chosen well. I feel sure the academic, social, athletic and inspirational ex- periences you have had here at Cocalico will en- able you not only to meet but to conquer the intricate problems of your future. Remax? SASL Robert F. Smith Supervising Principal To The Class of 1964: Because the Youth of Today has a wealth of knowl- edge which yesterday's youth did not have the op- portunity to experience, he is responsible to avoid behavior which injures his fellow citizen, hence his country. For this reason, the awesome res- ponsibility facing youth, The Citizen of Tomorrow, is increased many fold. Every individual is born with hopes and aspirations and his way of life must conform to God's in- tentions if he is tolive successfully. Youth's com- mitment must be to greater freedom for his fellow man and protect his highest degree of personal freedom possible within a framework of law and order. As the Bible puts it: Whoso looketh into the PER- FECT LAW OF LIBERTY and continueth there- in this man shall be blessed in his deed. This is your challenge. Sincerely, X A uw-94. P- LU Homer P. If the youth of today do not acquire the democratic ideals-the human dignity of man, individual responsibility for good government, respect for all people's feelings and rights, and good citizenship, then we can expect our society, as we know it today, to change. Therefore, The Youth of Today --- The Citizen of Tomorrow has a tremendous responsibility to perpetuate our demo- Kenneth E. We elected the following officers to serve us: Paula Shirk, President, Donald Wenrich, Vice-President, Connie Youndt, Secretary, and John Leisey, Treasurer. We chose our class colors - powder blue and black, and ordered our class jackets under the advisorship of Mr. Gerald Albrecht. During the year we checked coats at basketball games, had several sub sales, and sponsored two dances in order to raise money for our sophomore fishing trip and future activities. ' The year 1962-1963 was lead by Carol Steffy. Connie Youndt was elected Vice-President, Bonnie Wingenroth, Secretaryg and John Leisey, Treasurer. We held two dances, Christmas in Candyland and the St. Patrick's Day dance, Little People's Party. Carol Steffy and Dennis Reddig took the leads in our play, If A Man Answers, directed by Mr. Daniel Brensinger. Under the advisorship of Mrs. Jane Kilkuskie, we presented Southern Serenade in the high school gym on the evening of May 31, 1963. The gym was elaborately decorated with lanterns covered by Spanish moss and a white wrought iron pavilion serving as a centerpiece. Jimmy Beamesderfer and Bonnie Bates reigned as king and queen of the prom. In September of 1963 we began our senior year. Class officers elected were Burnell Rettew, President, Connie Youndt, Vice-President, Bonnie Wingenroth, Secretary, and John Leisey, Treasurer. Saturday, October 26 saw many seniors participating in Homecoming Day activities preceeding the football game with Elizabethtown. A dance was held in the high school gym to complete the day. On March 6 81 7 the class presented the play, The Man Who Came to Dinner, which starred Cheryl Leed and Marvin Reich. The play was directed by Mr. Daniel Brensinger. With the patience and guidance of our advisor, Mr. Ralph Lutz, Burnell Rettew, and several other individuals, on May 8 and 9 we were able to take a trip to the New York World's Fair. After a strenuous week of final exams the senior class was entertained on May 29, 1964, at the Junior Prom, Evening in Paris. Jimmy Hunsicker and Carol Steffy were crowned king Sz queen. After the prom We attended Club Calico at the Elks. Baccalaureate Services were held on May 31 in the high school auditorium. The invoca- tionwas given by the Rev. Donald Geschwindt. The Rev. Clair Wagner spoke about The Courage to Be-yourself, different and Christian. The benediction was pronounced by the Rev. Ronald Krick. Commencementwas held onWednesday June 3, 1964. The mayor of Reading, Pa. Eugene Shirk, was our speaker. We the 100 students of the graduating class of 1964, will always remember high school as the , first step we took in becoming responsible citizens of a great democracy. We realize that the receiving of adiplomadoes not mean that our education should cease, it means that we have just completed the first phase of our young lives and must continue to be educated by ourselves and others in the future.
