I 963 KO-K -LE-KO CO-EDITORS Sandra Boose Maribeth Mowrey FACULTY ADVISOR TO YEARBOOK Mr. Carl Foltz CLASS PRESIDENT Trudy Evans CLASS ADVISOR Mr. Ralph Lutz PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF I963 COCALICO UNION HIGH SCHOOL DENVER, PENNSYLVANIA FOREWORD We, the graduating class of 1963, will never forget our six years at Cocalico Union High School and will carry many fond memories with us for the rest of our lives. The following pages will help us share part of our high school life with the public. Graduation fulfilledalong worked-for goal. Now we step out into a world full of conflicts and tension. Once again we have agoal before us-the goal of preserving and strenghten- ing the peace of the world. For this reason we are dedicating our yearbook to World Peace. May we inspire others to ac- cept the same goal! ! ! 2 TABLE GF CONTENTS Clubs Administration and Faculty Seniors Underclassmen Q Sports Music Senior Highlights DEDICATION They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks, nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. Isaiah 2:4 The concept of peace is not a new one, but the fulfillment of it has probably never been as nec- essary as today. Yet the answer is so simple. If each person in the world would make an effort to understand everyone else, there would be no cold war, no Berlin crisis, no arms buildup, and no constant fear of war. We realize that we, as individuals or, for that matter, as a class, cannot change the course of events of the world and have no earthshaking plan to bring about world unity. But we also realize that world peace is a goal worth hoping for, prayingfor, and Working for. Thus we dedi- cate our yearbook to the hope and preservation of world peace. 4 Sify 5 U THANT, SECRETARY- GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS PROMOTER OF WORLD PEACE O ADMINISTRATICDN AN D FACULTY COCALICO U ION S HOOL BOARD Mr. Warren Althouse, Mr. Wilber Glass, Mr. Abram Weiler, Mr. Kenneth Hopkins, Mr. Clyde Ebersole, Mr. Warren Leininger, Dr. Raymond Stayer, Mr. Harry D. Leid. Cocalico Union School District Cocalico Union High School ROBERT F. SMITH, supmmng Pfinfzpil DENVER, PA. The class of 1963 of Cocalico Union High School will have many memories of their secondary school experience and l'm sure that most of them will be pleasant. You are to be commended on the selection of your motto World Peace for at no time in history has this topic been more important. The very existence of humanity is balanced on the problem of existence with those who differ. You have had some experience in getting along or living with others, and thus have become a more mature, responsible member of a free society. Military genius may save the nation from conquest by agressors from without. Only education can lead our people to understand and thus appreciate the American Democratic Way, and only through understanding and appreciation comes the will to preserve and foster it. To the extent that your education has nurtured in you this will and ability to live fully and democratically it has prepared you to meet this challenge. May you, with the help of God find yourselves prepared to meet it courageously and successfully, and with the same vi or g - ous activity which has been characteristic of you in your school life. H. . CLASS HISTORY In September of 1960, 180 eager sophomores entered the final phase of their high school career. The following officers were elected: President, Trudy Evans, Vice-President, Dean Wenrichg Secretary, Gerry Ann Hopkins, Treasurer, Salinda Bachman. Underthe advisorship of Mr.Rufus Martzall we selected red and black as our class colors. The class jackets arrived in December. Fund-raising projects throughout the sophomore year included coat-checking at basketball games, soup and sandwich sales, and the Thanksgiving dance, The Gobble Rock. At the close of our sophomore year several campers spent a weekend at Rebobath Beach, Delaware, where they went deep sea fishing and swimming. Trudy Evans was electedto lead our junior year. Clyde Martin was elected Vice-President, Gerry Ann Hopkins, Secretary, and Pat Beamesderfer, Treasurer. We held two dances, Mistletoe Magic and the Shemrock Hop. Junior class thespians presented Men are like Streetcars under the direction of Mr. Daniel Brensinger. The year was climaxed by a beautiful prom, Hawaiian Luau in the high school gym. At- mosphere was provided by a large grass hut, hand-made palm trees, tropical flowers, and Japanese lanterns. Tillman Sz Fisher provided the music. The Ephrata Legion was the scene for the post prom Club Cocalico . The class of 1963 began its busy last year by electing the following officers: Trudy Evans, President, James Beamesderfer, Vice-President, Gerry Ann Hopkins, Secretary, and Linda Gringg Treasurer. Mr. Ralph Lutz served as Senior Class advisor. Peace rules the day, reason rules the mind was chosen as the class motto, and the French rose was selected as the class flower. We augmented our treasury by selling refreshments at football and basketball games, by sponsoring three dances, and by producing the play Our Town , directed by Mr. Checter Sweigart. The play was a definite success. On April 26, we journeyed to Washington, D. C. Highlights of the trip included an ascent of the Washington Monument, a tour of the Smithsonian Institute and the International Airport, and dinner at the Casina Royal where we were entertained by Neil Sedaka. The New York Trip on way to included tours of the United Nations and Rockefeller Center as well as a show in the Radio City Music Hall. We dined at Taffonetti's on Times Square. The junior class welcomedus to a Southern Serenade at the annual prom on May 31. King and queen of the event were James Beamesderfer and Bonnie Bates. The post prom was held at the Ephrata Legion. Baccalaureate and Commencement marked the end of our high school days. The Rev. Donald Storm delivered the Baccalaureate meditation entitled A New Beginning. On June 5, 1963, eighty-five seniors became alumni at the Commencement service. Dr. Harry Gerlach, the County Superintendentof School, addressed the graduates. As one of the speakers said thus ends our first great lesson. 42 ELEVENTH GRADE ROW 1: P. Carrington, J. Becker, E. Fasnacht, L. Kutz, J. Hainley, B. Wingenroth, S. Bowman, P. Burd, J. Hurst, S. Michael Sensenig, Soloist f els, TONY MONTGOMERY OF WHAN PRESENTS THE I963 YEARBOOK QUEEN AND HER COURT Salinda Bachman For twelve consecutive years our lives have been sheltered and nurtured by par- ents, teachers, and friends. Their assist- ance was essential to us especially when we faced problems. A great change will take place in the life of every senior. We will cope with the problems, accept the responsibilities, and meet the challenges of a new kind of life. Whether we attend colleges or training schools, serve the armed forces, or begin Working immediately after graduation, we Will meet many changes. We, the class of 1963, feel assured that the help we received has been sufficient to enable us to become adult citizens in the complex world of today. qi! 4 ' .- ,ff - v tx 109 A KL J Dairy Bar Mr. KL Mrs. William Adair Arlene Adams Barbara Adams Mr. KL Mrs. Clair Adams Dennis Adams Eugene C.
