Zeofcahbn We the class of 1962 wish to dedicate our yearbook to Miss Catherine Werkheiser. Miss Werkheiser instructed our class in World Cultures and also taught Problems of Democracy. Through her World Cultures classes we have acquired a broader outlook on life and a better understanding of the world around us. Miss Werkheiser obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in history and government at Cedar Crest College. For the past two years she has been a member of Cocalico's faculty. During these two years, in addition to teaching her regular classes, she also coached the girls' basketball team. She has been a friend to many a student, and we wish to dedicate this yearbook to her in an effort to show her how we appreciated her part in guiding us through our senior year. C' L.gr,.,gfQ?'f 12,4 , xii., Scioof Boar Graduates of the class of 1962. All of you will remember this year and especially the day February 20th as the beginning of a new era. The year 1962 will always be associated with the successful three orbits of outer space. There is no doubt you will always remember the name Col. John Glenn. You will also recall 1962 as the year marking the final phase of your public education. Twelve years of preparation are now in the past. You are proving they have been well spent. The citizens of Cocalico Union are justly proud of your accomplishments. You now become a part of the Alumni of this school. We have every right to believe you will continue as good citizens, aiding your commimity, adjusting to new and better things to come, and maintaining the basic moral and spiritual values which your parents and forefathers have given you. Clyde Ebersole President of the School Board 6 up eruzlszlny Qjrzb C40 To The Class of 1962: Cocalico Union High School is proud to be able to graduate each one of you. This does not mean that we dismiss you with a diploma. It means, rather, that we share the satisfaction of your achievement and look with anti- cipation into your future. The ways in which you respond to the responsibilities ahead will in- dicate the benefits you have derived here. It is my hope that you have re- ceived not merely information, but attitudes of inquiry, imderstanding, and evaluation of what the ancient Greeks referred to as the good, the true, and the beautiful. When we have acquired these, then we can feel that we have attained something of the essence of education. Robert F. Smith Supervising Principal cscfoof 9717112 c:'1Q0 a To the Graduates: As another step in your academic career has been achieved, we are again reminded of the vital role you and others like you will be called upon to perform for the improvement of world conditions and to make living more desirable. The leadership that you and your fellow graduates must provide is no small measure of responsibility if our nation's strength and prosperity is to survive. It is hoped that your formal schooling has adequately prepared you for the service you will utimately be called upon to render to a society that is in need of strong justice, an abun- dance of compassion, and security in freedom and peace. Best wishes for a happy and fruitful life. Sincerely, Homer P. Weaver, High School Principal . 4 G. Albrecht C. Bastian E. Becker J. Brensinger T. Bright R. Care A G. Cravens I. Drumm E. Ebling B 'G. Bristling with dignity and self importance we elected the following class officers: Mary Frances Brand, president, James Lutz, vice-presidentg Donna Scheetz, secretary, and Virginia Whitman, treasurer. After many heated discussions we chose charcoal gray and gold as our class colors. Jackets were ordered for 103 students. For our annual class assembly we presented The Steve Gallen Show with Gilbert Gockley as the master of ceremonies. Our class advisor, Mr. Rufus Martzall, supervised our fund-raising projects which included a candy sale, checking coats at home basketball games, and the annual Thanks- giving dance. After a brief summer vacation our class was again united for our junior year. The officers electedwere James Lutz, president, Gerald Harding, vice-president, Linda Wea- land, secretaryg and Margaret Wolf, treasurer. Our junior class play, Six Stitches for Ego, under the direction of Mr. Walter Sieg- fried, was held on December 3, 1960. A party for the cast and play committees was en- joyed by all. On December 26, 1960, we held the annual Christmas dance, Jingle Bell Rock. The theme for our junior assembly was The Jack Parr Show with Jan Rutt portraying Jack Paar. The Shamrock Hop, our final dance, was held on March 11, 1961, in the high school gym. By this time we had received our class rings. The concluding highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom held on June 3, 1961. After much hard work, the high school gym was beautifully decorated according to the theme, Stairway to the Stars. Music was provided by the Johnny Barker Orchestra. In spite of frequent showers, it was an enjoyable evening for all. The Club Calico held the post prom party at the Mt. Airy Fire Hall. InSeptember of 1961,we gathered for the final time to elect class officers. We chose Gerald Harding, presidentgwilliam Kauffman, vice-president, Linda Wealand, secretary, and Margaret Wolf, treasurer, to lead us through our senior year. The first dance of our senior year, An Evening in Autumn, was held on October 14, 1961. The seniors were asked to conduct the Thanksgiving assembly. Our unusual assembly featured a beatnik theme. Our second dance, Snowflake Fantasy, which was held on January 11, 1962, proved to be a very successful fund raising project. Althoughwe earned some money selling refreshments at home football and basketball games, our class play was the largest of our money-making projects. For our play, we chose the Broadway hit, A Majority of One. It is the story of a late-life love affair between a Jewish widow from Brooklyn and a Japanese millionaire. On March 9, 1962, the class went to Washington, D.C. In spite of rain and snow we saw the Capitol, the White House, the F.B.I. Building, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, the Jefferson Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial and the changing of the guard at the Arlington National Cemetery. We ate dinner at the Casino Royal, where everyone enjoyed a floor show featuring Sarah Vaughn. On April 18, 1962, the class went to New York City. There we toured the United Nations and Rockefeller Plaza. In the afternoon we enjoyed the Easter pageant at the Radio City Music Hall. We had dinner at Toffonetti's near Times Square. Upon returning home, we drove through the Bowery and Chinatown. On May 5, 1962, the seniors held their final dance. The gym was decorated according to the theme, Swing Into Spring. On June 1, 1962,we were guests of the juniors at the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The theme for the gala event was Hawaiian Luau, featuring the Tillman Fischer orchestra. The post-prom party was held in the Ephrata Legion. The annual Baccalaureate was held on June 3, 1962, in the high school auditorium. The Reverend W. E. Waybright presented the meditation. The commencement exercises for the class of 1962 were held on June 6, 1962, at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Mr. Clyde Ebersole presented diplomas to '76 seniors. The Reverend Richard Druckenbrod, a graduate of Denver High School, delivered the address. This important event marked the end of our formal high school education. ROW 1: S. Hollinger, L.
