J 0l'elfU0l' We, the graduating class of 1960, have ful- filled an important and basic requirement in the scholastic world of today. Among the memories we will hold most dear is that of our achievement in the field of sports. Because of the outstanding accomplish- ments in this field, we have chosen sports as the theme for our yearbook. Though we part from fellowfclassmates, faculty, and friends to pursue new and diversified goals, we will always remember and cherish the years we spent together at Cocalico Union High School, and we believe that the knowledge and guidance we received will serve as a foundation for attaining even greater goals in the challenging world of tomorrow. jagk of Cgonfenfd FOREWORD TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY SCHOOL STAFF SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES MUSIC SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS .lealica fion With Sports as the theme, we, the Class of 1960, wish to dedicate our year- book to a person who has unselfishly contributed to the encouragement and pro- motion of sports at Cocalico Union. Since his arrival at our school three years ago, Mr. Galen Weidman has raised the school spirit by developing and training an excellent football team. In 1958, he coached the boys to an undefeated championshipg the following year the team missed the championship by losing only one league game by two points. In addition to his coaching activities, he is a junior high social studies teacher. Mr. Weidman is also an active member of many organizations including the Cocalico Union Booster Club, South Central Coaches' Organization, and the War Memorial Association. In appreciation of the time and effort you have contributed to sports at Cocalico Union, we are honored to dedicate this edition of the Ko-Ka-LefKo to you, Mr. Weidman. 1 nf W Xu .c +6 . The time, effort, knowledge, cooperation, and understanding you have ex- hibited during your school days will probably be in proportion to your earnings, successfulness and happiness in later years. True success or failure in life can- not be determined now, or measured at any time by men bestowing you with awards or merits of achievement. Real greatness comes from within you. It is manifested in many ways - - perhaps by thoughtfulness, kindness, humbleness, love or aid which is offered to anyone in sorrow, or to a community or people in need. Greatness knows no boundaries, it is a priceless possession and is within reach of all. Continue to build upon the foundation of truth, righteousness and courage throughout life. Although men may never acclaim the rewards you deserve, there is a Great Judge who will award every person according to his worth. It is this best award that I wish for each one of you. Sincerely, DANIEL B. KNAUER. .Hgh Schema! rincilna To you the graduates, students now and citizens in the future, who are end- ing your formal secondary education to assume your role as individuals in a free society. May you look ahead, to strive for those desirable qualities and accomplish- ments which will be of greatest service to you yourself and your fellow man. In keeping with American Democracy, it is hoped that you, the Class of 1960, will be able to provide leadership in the use of democratic group processes in the development of ideals which are consistent with the moral and spiritual values of our country's heritage. Believing in education for citizenship, you must accept the responsibilities thrust upon you by society so that those who shall follow you will find a brighter tomorrow and not reap a harvest of bitter fruitage. Cfaafs .Ma fury In September of 1957, as sophomores, we entered the final phase of our high school career. The officers we selected to serve us were President, james Emsingg Vice-President, Haskell Royer, Secretary, Betty Wenger, and Treasurer, Christine Knerr. Under the advisorship of Mr. Lester Hoffmaster, we selected our class colors, mint green and black, and ordered our class jackets. On December 12 we presented an assembly consisting of music of different countries. The Sophomore Moon Hop was held on February 1. During the year we also held two soup sales, checked coats at the basketball games, and had another dance as our fund raising projects. At the end of our sophomore term our class spent several days at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where we enjoyed camp life, swimming and fishing. It was not long until our class came together for our junior year. Haskell Royer, james Emsing, Betty Wenger, and Christine Knerr were chosen respectively as our President, Vice-President, Secre- tary and Treasurer for the term. During the year we held two dances, one of which was the Holly Hop . In November we pre- sented Grandad Goes Wild , the annual junior play, which was under the direction of Mrs. Thelma Bright and Mrs. Irma Drumm. A party was enjoyed by all of the members of the cast and staff after the performance. By the close of the term most of us had received our class rings, and we had chosen the green-tipped carnation as our class flower. On May ZZ at eight p. m. we presented Sayonara in the high school gym. The music for the prom was provided by johnny Slote and his Orchestra. The gym was beautifully decorated in an oriental style, including a pagoda and bridge as the centerpiece. Although it was warm, everyone had a wonderful time. After the prom we proceeded to the Ephrata V. F. W. where local organizations held the post prom Club Calico for us. The following September we entered our senior year, some of us with joy and some with sorrow. Class officers elected were Haskell Royer, President, Fred Hainley, Vice-President, Betty Wenger, Secretary, and Christine Knerr, Treasurer. Paul Showalter, Haskell Royer, Glenn Gerhart, and Richard Hatt were elected to serve as the senior representatives to student council. Education Today is Strength for Tomorrow was chosen as our class motto. Money for our senior activities was provided by selling re- freshments at football and basketball games, and by sponsoring several dances, the last of which was the April Sock Hop . The class of '60 presented two successful performances of You Can't Take It With You on March ll and 12 in the high school auditorium. Our trip to Washington, D. C., on Friday, March '25, proved to be enjoyable and memorable for everyone. Included in the trip were tours of the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, the White House, F.B.I. Building, and the Senate and House of Representatives Gallery. The Washington Monument, changing of the guards at Arlington Cemetery and National Airport were also included in our trip. To conclude our trip we dined at the Lotus Club, where we were also entertained by a floor show. As part of our tour of New York City on May 13, we visited the United Nations Building and Radio City Music Hall. After our enjoyable cruise around Manhattan, we completed our trip with dinner at Toffonetti's in the center of Times Square. Our senior year came to an end all too soon for our class of eighty-seven. On june 3 the Juniors held the prom with a theme of South Pacific. Music for dancing was provided by johnny Barker and his or- chestra. The gym was beautifully decorated according to the South Sea Islands motif. After the prom, we were all the guests of local organizations at the Ephrata Legion for Club Calico . Our Baccalaureate service was held on june 5 in the high school auditorium. The meditation was presented by the Rev. Ronald R. Krick, with the Rev. R. G. Beals and the Rev. john L. Myer assisting in the service. The Rev. E. G. Wiest of the Northeast Ohio Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church de- livered the address at commencement exercises on june 8. Wilbur Glass, Vice President of the School Board, presented our diplomas, formally marking the end of our public school careers. 41 MOST FLIRTATIOUS: S. Fasnacht, D. Weidman. LEAST EXCITABLE: M. Since that time it has become an inherent part of our school, establish- ing many traditions and providing many services to the student body, to the ad' ministration and faculty, and to charitable organizations. The Student Council serves as an open channel of communication between the student body and the faculty and administration. It provides our students with practical experiences in democratic procedures and processes. The Council performs an important function in leadership training - - and training in fol- lowing. The success and accomplishments of any Student Council will be de- pendent upon the responsibilities assumed by the student body and by Council members as the representatives of the student body. We can be especially proud of two of the eight victories. One of these was the victory over Allentown Central Catholic. It has a senior high school enrollment about six times that of Cocalico. The other important game was the defeat of our rival, Ephratag we won by the score of 39-O. We also got re- venge for the loss to Elizabeth- town in football by beating them twice in basketball. Mr. Schaef- fer's I.
