We cannot foresee the future, but we know that the things we have learned will serve as a sturdy foundation to guide us through the years ahead. To those who have given their time to help us in character building as well as scholastic attainment, we are grateful. As a new era ofeducation is coming about, and the outdated one-room school house is beginning to fade from view, we look upon our new, modern school as a step into the future. How do you think men from outer space would look at our school? Let's try to imagine that our school has been in- vated by many spacemen. As we go on an imaginary tour of the school with them, we see that they are sending messages back to their planet. -., Dedication Jgsunlvwv- -I if ffiifffc -.S ii-'wi-gg E ,J r ff? Today approximately 80'Za enter high school, but seldom do more that 4595 remain to be graduated. The goals of secondary education should be set at a level high enough to meet the needs of all groups of students, whether they be for college preparation, for entry into business and industry, for the mentally retarded, the physically handicapped or for the gifted students. We are meeting the first two of these goals in a satisfactory manner and it is most encouraging to note that much prog- ress is being made at the local, state and national levels to meet the latter needs in the not too distant future. When this is a reality, we shall then have approached close to the basic philosophy that educa- tion should be preparation for life and citizenship for everyone at all levels of intelligence. john P. Krick Supervising Principal For the hard work you have done here, for efforts expended, for goals achieved, you of the graduat- ing class of 1957 are to be commended. We all have faith and hope that life will be bet- ter, fuller and more abundant for all mankind. Your reward and satisfaction in life will depend upon your application of the goals which you have achieved in the Public School of Cocalico Union. My heartiest congratulations to you, and every good wish for your success and happiness. Carl Musselman, President Cocalico Union School Board 5 Messages Authority Paul S. Lesher ........... The diploma you will receive is written evidence of certain required work satisfactorily com- pleted. I This diploma serves as a gateway to in- numerable opportunities and walks oflife. Choosing the direction you wish to take IS often a dlflicult task. However, in all walks of life certain factors and principles may be gainfully considered and applied. ' In this world of rapid change most impor- tant of these, I believe, is to learn to get a ong with our fellowmen. At no time in history has this factor been more important. All the advances made by modern society can be of no avail, if consid- eration for the welfare of all people fails to be the predominant factor. With this thought in mind, I wish you all a happy, useful life in the years that follow. Ralph F. Lutz Administrative Assistant To The Class of '57 Many written documents have played sig- nificant roles in shaping the course of history. In England, the Magna Carta is pre-domin- ant, in the United States, the Bi l of Rights takes precedence. The document you are eligible to receive from the Cocalico Union School District will never be as significant as the aforementioned documents, but, to you, the achievement and distinction of having received a high school diploma should be paramount. This document stands as a symbol of your having received the tools of knowledge nec- essary for life. It further stands as a symbol of democracy in that you have been entitled to an education which has given you the tools with which to think, not the thoughts you are forced to accept. Your major obli ation, in accepting this document is to make use ofthese tools in a way that your children will still have the op- portunity of becoming a high school gradu- ate. Donald F. Peters Administrative Assistant 7 To The Class of '57 You, the class of 1957, have chosen as your motto- Knowledge Is the Key to Success. As a member ofthe administrative staffof Cocalico Union High School, I feel sure that all ersonnel of this school have contributed to tlieir utmost in providing the experiences, associations, and educational aids necessary to the filling of your key ring with an abun- dance ofnknowledge keys, which will as- sure your ultimate success. Our class officers were Barry Emes, presz'dent,' Madelyn Henly, vice-presia'ent,' Lorna White, seeretayg' and Robert Hefiley, treasurer. Bake sales, a roller skat- ing party, and a St. Patrick's Dance kept our treas- urer busy counting all the money which we made. We had a Christmas party and celebrated Lin- coln's Birthday by presenting a play in assembly. This year at East Cocalico, the Sophomore Class returned to room 1, the same homeroom the class 30 used as freshmen. Elected to serve for the year were Michael Weinhold, president, onathan Haws, vice-presz'dent,' Phyllis Rutt, seeretapg' Ray Sweigart treasurerg and Miss Beck, advisor. Highlights of the year for our class of thirty-four were a roller skat ing party and the receiving of our black and white jackets. When we returned in 1955 to school wejoined our classmates in a new school building. Our class consisted of seventy-five members. Our home rooms were 213 and 214 and our homeroom teach ers were Miss Neidhart and Mr. Drumm. Our class oflicers were Michael Weinhold, president, Kenneth Hirneisen, vice-pres1'a'ent,' Lorna White, secretagg' and Madelyn Henly, treasurer. There are six representa- tives from the Junior High School: a boy and a girl from each of grades seven, eight, and nine. From tenth grade come three representatives. Eleventh grade also has three representatives and twelfth grade has four. The Council meets every two weeks in the Activities Room. At this time the representatives discuss the helpful suggestions which classmates have made and try to put the useful and worthwhile ones in effect. This year Student Council has sponsored a Sir Valentine Contest, monitor system, Youth Day, student council election, a suggestion box, and Field Day. Field Day is one ofthe most important activities for which Student Council is entirely responsible. It is a day set aside each spring for the purpose of field and track events. On this day each homeroom participates in various events, such as, relay races, broad jumping, and baseball distance throw. Each winner is given a ribbon as a memorandum of the event. The system is set up on a point basis, and banners are presented to the junior and Senior homerooms which have earned the most points. This year we had a team of which we could be especially proud. The boys won their first game on September 29 when they played against West Reading. The score of the game was 14-13. The football used in that game was presented to Mr. Krick in an assembly program. It is now on display in one of our showcases. Coaches Rampulla and Albrecht have worked very hard with the boys for a long period of time and have been well rewarded for their work. Even though football is a relatively new sport, the boys have displayed progress. The coaches hope to have many more boys try- out for the team. 81 C.U. 7 .... .... C ornwall ....... 7 ..,. ....
