C. High School under the supervision of Mrs. Edith Bisser. During our first year in the E.C.l'l.S. we were very active in presenting a play entitled At the lnn of the Golden Cheese and publishing a school paper named E. C. Extra. The following Fall, as a class of mischievous Freshmen, we entered l-ligh School having Miss Fry as our home room teacher. The number of would-be-graduates had decreased to twenty-six. During this year students were invited to join various clubs and the fantastic manner of dress affected by us attested to our taking part in the initiation rites, thereby being eligible to attend club meetings. The last day of the term was spent along the Wabash where a wonder- ful time was had by all the class members. ln the Fall of '44, twenty-one of our original students reported to Miss Simmons who was our home room teacher as lordly Sophomores, as well as two new boisterous Denver students, namely, lane Burkholder and Floy Mae Weinhold. A l-lall.owe'en Party highlighted our school activities for this term. As we started our lunior year under Mrs. Fickes as home room teach- er, our number had dwindled down to twenty-one seasoned and determined students. All of us were extremely' anxious to begin this term for this year we would get those treasured Senior Class rings. During this year we all had a lot of fun on a hay ride. We shall never forget how surprised and well-pleased our home room teacher was when we presented her with a ture key in appreciation of her patience and effort with us. The departing Seniors put us in charge of the candy sales in March, as well as sales at basketball games. The preparation for the lunior and Senior Prom took place this year. We had the decorations in green and gold for the departing Senior Class colors. Our fine music was supplied by Bill Ludwig's Orchestra which was a surprise to some of the Seniors. Everybody had a very nice time at the Prom. ln September of our Senior year we were put under Rev. Albright's supervision with sixteen students. During the third month Bill Ludwig, the musically talented student left the group to join the Army Air Force with hope of joining Major George l-loward's Army Air Force Band in the future. To the delight of everyone we received our caps and pennants in November, branding us as true Seniors of E.C.l-l.S. During the first months we realized that being a Senior meant more than difficult lessons and responsibilities. The greatest task was publishing our school paper which we named The Chatterbox. This required cooperation from every student who was put on the staff and each one responded splendidly. After our Christmas vacation was over we returned and began work' ing on our Senior Play as well as our yearbook. By now we had more re- sponsibilities in the form of selling ads and yearbook activities. We raised the money for our New York trip throughout all four years of school by having roller skating parties, selling candy at school, and sell- ing refreshments at basketball games. Finally as we attended baccalaureate services, Class night, and Com- mencement we realized our high school life at E.C.H.S. was over and after a thiee fzlays tour of New York City we are stepping out of school life into life's sc oo. A strange hum is heard which is recognized as a helicopter. Upon further investigation who is found to be operating it? Can you guess? Yes, it is Vernon Boose, who is now proprietor of the great Boose Aluminum Foundry. Hack told Bernice Stewart, his receptionist, that he has planned to visit his former classmates, and bring them back to the metropolis of Reamstown to see the newly erected high school which now seats l5OU pupils. Hack's first stop is made in the state of California where he meets Pierce Getz who has just finished making a record album of Tschaikowsky's Concerto No. l in B Flat Minor with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Having conversed for a short time, Hack and Getzie leave for Salt Lake City where they find Dean Mohler on her vacation from l Know lt All College for women. As the three level off and head out towards the rolling plains of Wis- consin, we look down and what do we see? Nothing more than a large two- thousand-acre dairy farm owned and operated by that great E. C. agricultur- ist, Clair Rutt. He certainly has made a success of himself, if only the teach- ers could see him now. We zoom from Wisconsin to Chicago where we find Iane Burkholder, B.S., MD., RN., who, through her constant effort at Elizabethtown Crippled Children's Hospital has advanced herself so as to be under the supervision of Floy .Mae Weinhold. Yes, Floy has completed many wondrous works in the field of sociology while working at the hospital for crippled children. We change our course to due south to pay Governor Thompson of Georgia a visit. Who should we find in the governor's private office but Arlene Sweigart who is more interested in the governor than in the dicta- tion she is supposed to be taking. We head into the real sunny south, to be exact, into the everglades of Florida, where, at Palm Beach we find Kenneth Stick building castles in the sand for Kenny, Ir. Kenneth and his family are on vacation from his large executive position in a New York concern. We head farther north until we come to North Carolina. Here, Hack decides to drop in at one of his lesser branches, upon arriving we find chief accountant David Slater and his financial secretary, Betty Leisey, hard at work. Betty and David acquired their positions through their efforts at E. C. Next we enter the rolling hills of Kentucky where we see a country school down in the valley, surrounded by woodland. Upon investigating we find Miss Swartz trying desperately to understand the Kentucky drawl-l-l-l. She is succeeding and is just too glad to attend our reunion. She sends her children home, gathers together a few things and off we go into the wild blue yonder. -----A----------------A c 18 J-------N------------N :va-v-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-v-.--.-----v-4 KO-KA-LE-KO f--Av'-vAv'-'ff-'v'vAv ' CLASS PROPHECY fContinuedl -. Now let's drop in at Washington, D. C., where we meet one of our fine fellows, Bill, who was always in mischief at E. C. but has now been tamed by attending M. C. l. After Rusty goes through a lot of red tape, he finally gets a furlough and bounces along with the gang. After flying a few hours everyone gets restless, so we decide to stop and stretch our legs. As we stroll down Fifth Avenue we spy a beauty salon, let's drop in and see what we can find. At once we notice the name Madame Fritz. We wonder if that could be the same Fritz that attended E. C. Yes, there she is, lean Fritz waving Iohn Rockerfeller, Ir.'s hair. She is very much interested in her work. 'We wonder, is it the job or Iohn! Well, time is slipping by and we must travel more rapidly. Instead of crawling in the helicopter Hack sells the helicopter and buys three l957 super deluxe Studebakers. He drives one of them and appoints Bill Lied and Clair Butt to drive the others. We drive on the Smooth as Glass highway and not until we hear the wail of a siren do we realize that we are clipping 190 miles per hour. Y A State trooper signals to pull to the side. 'We all alight and recog- nize the trooper to be our Vernon Ansel, who always wanted to be a State trooper. On seeing how rnuch fun we are having, he decides to take his ghost car to the nearest sub station and join the gang. We are very glad to have Monkey join us for he always adds to the fun. As we enter the metropolis of Reamstown a call comes through on the car phone from receptionist Miss Stewart that a surprise is awaiting us at the Boose mansion. This arouses our anxiety so the cars put on speed, and reach the mansion in regular time. We discover our surprise to be the last missing classmate, Lt. Bill Lud- wig home on terminal leave from Alaska where he has spent his last ten years entertaining the Eskimos. Tired but very happy, we have all succeeded and are again reunited at our birthplace where we expect to spend several weeks visiting Hack and Miss Stewart. Here we shall rest and discard a great load from our minds. We wonder if everything will turn out as well in the next ten years as it has in the ten years since, we graduated from dear old E. C. Through me spirits immortal speak the message that makes the World Weep, and laugh, and wonder, and Worship. I tell the story of love, the story of hate, the story that saves and the story that damns. I am the incense upon which prayers float to Heaven. I am the smoke which palls over the field of battle where men lie dying with me on their lips. I am close to the marriage altar, and when the graves open I stand nearby. I call the Wanderer home, I rescue the soul from the depths, I open the lips of lovers, and through me the dead whis- per to the living. One I serve as I serve all, and the king I make my slave as easily as I subject his slave. I speak through the birds of the air, the insects ofthe Held, the crash of waters on rock-ribbed shores, the sighing ofvvind in the trees, and I am even heard by the soul that knows me in the clatter of wheels on city streets. I know no brother, yet all men are my brothers, I am the father of the best that is in them, and they are fathers of the best that is in me, I am of them, and they are of me.
