Voice Of Democracy Won By Celia Foy DEMOCRACY is an ambigious word, with a personal meaning for each and everyone of us, this right of personal definition is what true democracy means to me. We, as citizens of the United States, have the choice and opportunity to improve ourselves and others. We have a heritage to uphold and strengthen and I think our generation has the capabilities to do just this. Often called the leaders of tomorrow, we should be termed the leaders of to- day for it is now when our true character develops. Our parents and grandparents have set up a good educational system but we must use it properly. We should obtain all possible information on world affairs; we should set up a high code of morals for ourselves— try to realize that all men are created equal and erase any and all forms of discrimina- tion. Then we must strive to help others see this as an effective way of preserv- ing democracy. Once we become aware of what Is a threat to our basic way of life, we can then combat it. Once we understand the meaning of democracy, we can then choose whether to keep it or not. I know it shall live as long as citizens interested in our nation ' s welfare continue to participate and im- prove our present way of life. Those who participated in the Voice of Democracy Contest were SEATED: Celia Foy, Gayle Dowding, and Danny Solas; STANDING: Socorro Ordonez, Judy Gonzales, Mike Simmons, Kay Martin, Salvador Estrada, and Lupe Torres. 83
