Los Amigos Alegres The beginning of school found Los Amigos busily organizing their membership roll compromised of sen- iors enrolled in Spanish III or IV, juniors with superior grades in Spanish and all past members. Officers were Simon Ortiz, president; Rosie Garza, vice president; Mary E. Martinez, secretary; Corine Lucero, treasurer; Johnny Benavidez and Pauline Gri- jalva, program co-chairmen. Sponsor of the club is Mrs. Barbara W. Serna. Club activities included a float in WNMU ' s Home- coming Parade, annual initiation party for the new members; luminaries at Christmas time; Valentine Dance after the first Cobre-Silver basketball game; an- nual gas raffle ... all topped off by the club ' s an- nual banquet where various awards and honors were given. Pablo Enriquez and Victor Juarequi light the luminaries which the Spanish Club placed around the front of the school at Christmas time. Latin Club Initiates Twelve ft f% — fl Jr. M FRONT ROW: Judy Klingeman, Socorro Ordonez, Helen Sheldon, Patsy Mohr, Virginia Chavez, Celia Foy, Sheryl Parker, Terry Wofford, Mrs. Roberta Thayer, sponsor, and Bobby Udero. BACK ROW: Penni Wright, Nancy Brown, Judy Gonzales, Glenno Wooten, James Allen, Domingo Maynes, Nora Benovidez, Mary Volerio, Dolores Chovira, Clark McNoughton, Danny Soloz. Carpe Diem, the official name of the Cobre Latin Club, has various activities each year with the Fall Initiation and the Spring Banquet two of the most important. The club also sends delegates to the J. C. L. State Convention and participates in the Christmas program, food basket drive, Christmas decorations and the Talent Show. Latin Club is headed by Glenna Wooten, presi- dent; Penni Wright, vice president; Mary Valeric, secretary; Delores Chavira, treasurer; Judy Klinge- man, historian; and is sponsored by Mrs. Roberta Thayer. All members have had at least one year of Latin or are enrolled in Latin I this year. The main purpose of Carpe Diem is to stimulate interest in the Latin culture and develop a knowledge of Ancient Rome. Nora Benovidez listens attentively while Glenna Wooten reads the history of a Roman god. Mrs. Roberta Thayer, Clark McNoughton, Sheryl Parker and Penni Wright look on as Helen Sheldon receives her Romon name from Glenna Wooten, club president, during the Latin Club initiation. 106
