K LON SHRIVER SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Four years ago, in September, 1913, a promising class of fourteen members entered high school in the old school building which is now the Baptist Church. The members were: Klon Shriver, Robert Post. Ed Kiley, Herbert Harper, Dwight Lyman, Ralph Harrouff, Vina Gillam, Ruth Harper, Octavia Williams, Beulah Scott, Faythe Allphin, Thelma Harper, Nethye Clements, Beatrice Lockert. S. J. Ross was the teacher. As Sophomores, we entered high school looking forward with great anticipation to our future high school days in the new building. Five of our members departed for various reasons, so we were rejoiced when Hershel Kannier and Kate Johnson entered our class. The class passed on to its Junior year with the loss of two members, thus leaving only seven. But the class went industriously on, and at the close of the term the members departed, hoping all would again return in the fall for their Senior year. Kate Johnson, who had been attending high school at Colorado Springs reentered our class, but we were disappointed to learn that two of our members, Nettie Clements and Thelma Harper, had decided not to enter the Senior year. This left us, the first graduating class of Coats High School, with six members. lllllllll' v JIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIHIIIHHIIIIHIIHHIIIHIIIIUIIIIINIIIIHIIIIIUIIHNHIIINHIHNHIII1NKIIIQHIIIIHIIIIVIIIH 6 U B n rIBBNIIIIINHIIHHIIHHIIIINHIIHNIIIHNHIIIIIIIIHHIIHHIIHIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIHIIIIHHIIIIIIHIIIIHII BEULAH SCOTT B. Well, for a picnic set of witches, these certainly are the most real- istic I have ever seen! exclaimed Beulah, as she drew a little nearer the entrance to the cave. '6They seem almost tooea- - The magic now is here. The vision will appear, interrupted one of the sisters three. Beulah gave a little gasp of surprise. and sank upon the moss- covered rock beside her, for in the mist arising from the cauldron, first faintly seen, then quite clearly, was an exact picture of her old high school. Standing before its entrance was a group of students posing for an all-high-school picture, and before them stood Mr. Tierney, that mod- ern Job. Just as she was about to look more closely for 'individuals among her former school mates, thc scene changed, and Faythe Allphin's face appeared smiling at her, out of the mist. Well, who would believe that Faythe could have changed so much! she exclaimed. Here she is today a nurse in a Red Cross Hos- pital. D0esn't that look just like she used to though, with her serious smile and omnipresent shirt waist and skirt? But who is this appearing in her place? Hershel Kannier, red hair and all, just as he used to be! It seems strange not see his hair all white as it is to-day. But then, ten years can make a lot of difference. Who would have thought when we were Seniors together that he would have developed into an Easl- African missionary? He ought to see this vision. He's here at the Alumni Picnic to-day, home on a leave of absence, but if I called him. he'd talk as usual, then the spell would be broken. Oh, there's Kate Johnson now, and yes, that's Klon with her. He seems to be making a cartoon-his old talent, I believe. To-day, Kate, ex-chief of police in New York City, is winning great renown for daring. and bravery, and Klon has evolved into a great doctor on microbes and germs. Oh, there's Ruth, my old pal! She seems to be whispering to--we yes, sure enough-sto mel VVell, did we really look as young as that when we were in school? To-day Ruth is to be married to a multi- millionaire and is a great society lady. . Beulah, oh Beulahf' called a voice from without the cave. Come on out, you've had you'rc turn. Did I ever tell you of the organization of the Junior class? No? Well, sir, it's just this way: we started into high school with fif- teen Freshmen in the year 1914. As Freshmen we were noted for show- ing the greatest class spirit in school, but our enthusiasm was so great that we failed to elect any class officers and, green being so predominant among the Freshies Kas we were dubbed by the upper classmenj, we thought it best to wait a year before choosing another class color. I never shall forget the day our career as Freshmen ended and we all passed with high honors into the Sophomore class. It was then our hard study came to a close, for as Sophs we were taken into the social whirl of the school and have been in it from that time. One night during that year will never be blotted from my memory. It was the night of the Junior party at the home of Hershel Kannier's. We, being Sophomores, were not invited, so we decided to go anyway. On the way, we were held up by a bandit with a big gun, but being brave and fearless, we turned on more gas and raced past him. After serenad- ing the Juniors for several hours, Jake, Ray, Herbert, and Elmer sang Hallelujah, Give Us a Hand Out, but no one responded to the song, so being discouraged we journeyed back to town. This year, you know, we are Juniors and still have our first char- acteristic of enthusiasm with added class spirit and school Pep. As Juniors we have done our part to keep our high school up to standard along all lines of activity. We are proud to say that we are well repre- sented in athletics, debate and music. For our coming year as Seniors we hope to say that we are- First in enthusiasm, I First in society, and First in the hearts of old Coats High. llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllll 2 Class Pres. The proof of this is obvious. E 5 It was not until the coming of the present Freshmen class that Coats 2 3 was able to prove herself in basket ball. Witli our help, she won the 5 2 championship of the western division of the Englewood Branch League. 3 5 It was the Freshman class that started the High School aright in the 5 g social world. This it did by giving an evening to which the whole school E E was guests. The bravery of the Freshnlen was shown in that they only 2 2 would enroll in the Latin class. VVhat more is to be said? One of the new departments added to the lligh School curriculum this year is the Domestic Science department. It is also a department that the lligh School can well be proud of, for its laboratory is well equipped and conveniently arranged. Beside the large room which is used for the regular laboratory work, there is also a conveniently arranged pantry. ln the pantry is a cupboard, which contains the school lunch equipment and other laboratory supplies. The equipment is arranged for a class of twelve and during most of the year the number was complete. The girls have given their hearty cooperation in the serving of school lunches in connection with their regular work in Domestic Science. Another feature of this arrangement that the school may well be proud of, is that made for the noon- hour lunch. XVhite tables and stools arranged along two sides of the room, made it possible for those remaining at school during the noon hour to eat their lunch in a comfortable and sanitary place. A special etl'ort was made to supervise this noon day lunch and during the winter months, some hot dish was served each day free of charge to those pupils bringing their lunch. The girls have also shown themselves capable in putting tlleir theories into practice for they have served lunches, dinners, and refreshments on several occa- sions during the year. The department being new, there are still many things necessary to make the equipment complete and to this end the girls have worked. VVith the idea of a dining room for the department in mind the girls have each earned a dollar for the class with which to buy silver. Undoubtedly this department will still continue to grow and make progress and a graded system of work will probably be added to the curriculum next year. lllllllllllllillllllllllllllllllllllllIHlllllllllllllllllllllLlllllllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIllllllllllllllllltllllllllllllllllllIllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIllllllIlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll r illIlllllllllllllllllllllllNillllilllllNIlllllllllllllllNllllllllllllllllNNHIINlllllNNilllliNlllllNIllllNIIIIIHlllllllllllllllllg U rIBENIIIIINIIIIHHIIINIIIIIIIIIIINHIIINIllllllllllllIlllllIllllHIIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlillllllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllllllllllllg l Our Prayer E 5 We do not ask, dear Lord, a life of ease 5 With roses filled, E We could not ask our hearts with joy to please 5 Or pleasures gay, 5 5 We would not seek, dear Lord, for happiness, E 2 None else in view, 5 E Or live a life content in passiveness E 2 Submerged in self. Basketball The basket ball season of 1916-'17 was the most successful in the history of Coats High School. Out of fourteen games played, only four were lost, and when the season closed Coats was the winner of the cham- pionship of the western division of the Englewood Branch Basket Ball League. The schedule for the season was the heaviest ever played. The season opened on the home court, December 16, with Protection High School in the first game of the league. The Hoodoo of the previous year and lack of confidence gave this game to Protection, score 33-25. The second game on December 20, was a 68-11 victory for Coats over Isabel High School. This game was played on the home court. It demonstrated that the boys could play first-class basket ball, and it not only filled the crowd with enthusiasm, but put a spirit of fight and deter- mination in to the team which stayed with them through the season. On January 5, Coats made the first trip away from home, and was victorious over Coldwater. The 33-29 victory over that team was the first defeat registered against them on their home court in two years. The next night, the team came home and met Preston High, who boasted no home defeats in three years. They were over-confident because of a 64-20 victory over Cunningham the night before, and Coats won 59-20. After suffering three years of defeat by Protection, Coats, on Janu- ary 12, invaded the cnemy's camp with the determination to have revenge and to retrieve the first defeat of the season. The game was a fight to the finish with Coats High the winner by a three point margin. On the same trip, the following night, Coats met Englewood on their dance hall court. The superior fight of our boys gave a lead through- out the first half, but too much sliding at critical points enabled Engle- wood to win in the last three minutes of play, score 31-28. With three victories and no defeats, the prospects look bright for Englewood! Wait till you come to Coats! On January 20, Haviland Academy came to Coats on a rainy night. The smallest crowd of' the season saw Haviland take their defeat, 61-11. The next Wednesday night, January 24, Haviland High School, then the leader in the Rock Island League, invaded our camp, determined to turn the tables and expecting to win by thirteen points. This game was the most exciting of the season. Haviland quickly took the offensive and lead throughout the first half and, early in the second half, secured a nine-point lead. Their confidence seemed justified indeed. How- ever, at this point the old fight of the home boys and their superior staying power asserted itself. VVith four minutes to play and Haviland three points in the lead, Harper, who had substituted in the last half, threw goal. The team work that followed was the fastest ever shown on 'IIlIlIIIIlllIIIlllIIIllIIIIlIlIIIllIIIIIlllIIIllIIII1IIIIIllIIlIllIIIIlllIIIIIIIIIIllIIIIllIIIIIIIIIllIIIIIIllIIIIlIIIIIllIIIIIlIIIIIllIIllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllll IIIIllIIIIllIlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIIllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllltlllllIIIIIlllIIIlIllIIIlIIlIlIIIIllllllllllllllllllllllllllll' r IIIIl!IIIIl!IILII!!!!!III!!!Ill!!!!II!!!!Ill!!!lll!!tlllt!Illl!!!Ill!till!!!IIIl!!ill!!!!Ill!!!Ill!!!III!!!IIl!!!IIll!!iIl6Dinan EmurlBK!!iIIl!!!Illl!!III!!llllllIIIII!HI!!!III!!!!III!!IIIl!!IIII!lIIIl!IIIll!IIII!!IIlll!IIIlll!IIIIl!!IlllI!!IIIlllllllllltl I. the local court. It is worthy of note that in the last minutes of play the ball was scarcely allowed to reach the visitors' hands at all. The home boys continued to score and the game ended, Haviland 24, Coats 27. January 26, the Saturday night following, we played Pratt High School on their floor. We don't know what was wrong. Preston had defeated Pratt, and had been defeated by us with a thirty-nine point margin. Mullinsville beat Pratt 44-14. We defeated Mullinsville 43-30. But, when the game ended on that night, Pratt was two points ahead by their score and we didn't question it. A home man refereed. February 3, Coldwater came to Coats and took their second defeat from Coats, score 50-26. They were a likeable bunch of fellows and good losers. NEXT! The game to decide the championship of the western divi- sion of the Englewood Branch! This was played at Coats February 10. In percentage the'two teams were tied. Coats had won two games away from home, Englewood had lost all her games away from home, but had defeated Coats at Englewood. So the outcome was in question till the game started. At the end of five minutes the score was 16-1, and at the end of the half 33-9 in favor of Coats. There might have been a rare possibility of Englewood winning in the last half but their coach insisted on a floor ruling that slowed both teams down and made much scoring impossible. The game ended, Englewood 20, Coats 45. Coats Champions! February 10 was Coach Slough's birthday and it was cele- brated aright. By this time Mullinsville had heard of Coats and, since they had defeated Pratt, Haviland, Dodge City, et cetera, they wanted, also, the honor of winning from Coats. So they came down from their Rock Island perch, February 16. They had money that said that they would win by thirteen points. The score was Mullinsville 30, Coats 43. To Norwich we take otl' our hats. They came to Coats, February 24, and defeated us fairly and squarely, score 47-39. While it is true our best guard was out of the game, we do not offer this as an excuse, our boys played well, theirs played better. NVQ- believe there was a time in the season when we could have beaten them, and next year we expect to' do so. The season closed with Statford. In an indifferently played game, with some of the regulars out, Coats won, 37-29. A word to the team: It was a team of which any high school might be proud. The cleanest, manliest fellows that have played on our court, was a common saying everywhere our boys had played. The boys scrupulously obeyed the training rules and refrained from the use of tobacco. Our team amply demonstrated that the athlete who dissi- pates cannot compete with him who abstains. He held down the position of guard on the '15-'16 squad, and held down the position of for- ward on '14-'15 squad. Bill will be with us next year. Hidge filled the position of left forward during the absence of Captain West. He held the position of for- ward on the second team during the '15-'16 season. Besides being the fastest, surest goal shooter on the squad he was the best natured and one of the best liked men in the league. Herb, War Horse Number One, filled the positions of right forward and Captain '15-'16, and center '13-'14- 15 squads. He was the largest man on the team. He held his place well and could be depended upon. Claud', filled the position of center, was the only freshman on the squad, and was a new man on the team. Played all thru the game. VVoody held the position of right guard, was on both '14-'15 and '15-'16 squads. They seldom got by him. Cool headed, yet fast. K Happy filled the position of right guard on the team, was center on second team during '15-'16, and sub for the first team. Send him back so we can see him. Starred in the Coldwater game. Fitz relieved NVar Horse Number One, was a new man on the squad, and play as sub guard. All right, and John did it. Chinny played as sub center during '16-'17 season, also sub during '15-'16 season. Old Reliable. We're glad he will be back again. Chunk played as sub forward during '16-'17, and the position of forward during ,14-'15-'16 seasons. A credit to a team.
