RUSH October 3, 1984 marked the date of Coastal Carolina's Activity Day. During this time the various clubs are given a splendid opportunity to introduce themselves to the students here at Coastal. Each club is allowed to set up a table or booth in order to provide information on their membership requirements and the activities that they sponsor and participate in. For example, the Society of the Undersea World lSUWl set up a table displaying certain scuba equipment that their club uses. Students were able to mingle among themselves, enjoy free hotdogs and Cokes, and sign up for the clubs that they were interested in. Thanks to Activities Day students are able to become better acquainted with the extracurricular activities here at Coastal! if V- EWHEFSY ?ff':?fl41Wf1'5 i ff ffi' ' 'J I I , t f +5 ,Q , U if ' A 4, ,asf 1 L A. , 4' ' mind ' zmffffsy f pf , ,,, QW. 51411, V, . Students mingle and discuss the upcoming school S6IT16St8I'. The Campus Union started the Fall 1984 semester off in style by sponsoring a Welcome Back dance for all students and faculty here at Coastal Carolina. They pro- vided fifty-cent draft and wine, along with other refreshments. The feature entertain- ment was Dance Limited, who provided a wide variety of music for everyone to enjoy. After a brief time and with some encourage- ment from the D.I., couples gradually made their way to the dance floor. As the sounds of Dance Limited filled the ballroom of the Landmark, everyone seemed to forget all but ther moment. Certainly, the Welcome Back Dance proved to be quite a success! fa -wr 1 .,- 7: i While taking a break from the evenings activities, these students become reacquainted with old friends. Wfmwfw aamm Show Some Style The Coastal Carolina Art Department, along with The Lilly Pond, Step 'N Style, Mi Lady and Formal Wear held a fashion show at 2001 to raise money for the school's club. Many of Coastal's students participated, and it was thought to be a big success. Coastal student and director Ioey McColluch worked diligently with the art students as well as the volunteer models to get the show off the ground. Neon Fashions, the baggy look as well as some breathtaking for- mal wear were featured. The stores were generous to provide door prizes and entertainment. It was a night to remember and thanks to the great art depart- ment the show was a big success. , I f ,f if ,fc , J 1 Ngo? Qqfyi zfivwzqa y d wa' .Q V? s ..,..- . + Wg'm Q W 1 ,Ns . Situated just off of Ocean Boulevard, the Landmark Hotel vibrated with the rocking beat of popular music on December 7, 1984. As couples entered the dimly-lit hall, the sounds of Inn-O- Vation' magically put them in the danc- ing mood. The Campus Union used their talents to transform the hotel ballroom into a glamorous setting for the annual Christmas dance. Free beer, wine, and hors d'oevers were served to keep the spirits high. As the activities came to a halt around 1 a.m., the students de- parting all agreed that the evening had been a great success! The music provided by Inn-O-Vation ' is-li' kept the partygoers merry. Campus Union members carefully checked student I.D.'s before admitting them. These students catch up on the latest gossip during the band's intermission. The South Carolina Philharmonic Or- chestra performed at the Wheelwright Auditorium on November 27, 1984. Eina Anderson, a graduate of both Stanford and Harvard conducted the orchestra. Robert Pruzin, a faculty member at USC-Columbia, was the featured soloist. Sid Ceasar, a legend in the world of comedy, presented a special lecture at USC-Coastal Carolina on October 16, 1984. He discussed his television program, The Show of Shows, as well as the basics of comedy. He also gave a performance of a few of his most famous routines. af ,ibm On Valentine's Day, USC.-Coastal presented some of North Carolina's most gifted dancers and musicians. Chuck Davis used his N.C. ,heritage and much ex- perience with African, Caribbean, and American dance to create this exciting troupe. v- aw' e NOW SW a X Gwygaie gas fo C Psa, 5 FJ P56030 SC P v. Also, Coach Banta recruited players from as far away as Iceland and Australia and as local as Myrtle Beach. The combined efforts of all team members led to the Big South Tournament in West Virginia, where they finished with a record of 1-1. As the S.C. legislature raised the legal drinking age for beer and wine to 20, questions were raised as to how the new law would affect student functions. The Panel of Presidents and S.G.A. both met to determine what Coastal's new alcohol policy would be. Basically, nothing changed. Coastal wil abide by all state and federal laws concerning alcohol. Therefore no one under 20 will be allowed to consume alcohol at any school function. For now at least the matter seems settled. However, as the drinking age goes up to 21, questions will certainly arise as to whether or not Coastal should allow alcohol at all. if gg., ...C .4 Z Z5 l. gl. Faced at the onset with an unstable tradition, staff members set out to improve the image and reputation of the yearbook. Yet it was not an easy task. After many planning and deadline problems combined with low book sales, it seemed that all might be lost. It was at this point that the issue was raised that perhaps the students and faculty did not really want a yearbook. The answer came in the first few weeks of March. During a successful campaign by Student Government Association to Save the Yearbook, money was raised through book sales, ad sales, donations, and even a car wash. The time, effort, and money that was donated by everyone was greatly appreciated. After such an overwhelming response, par- ticularly by student leaders, the yearbook staff was able to continue. Certainly this project began Against The Wind. Thankfully failure did not occur. The hard work and dedication of each staff member has resulted in a book in which each and every student and faculty member can be proud of. I would like to thank each one of these individuals for their help. Also, I would like to thank each of the S.G.A. officers, especially Scott Hill, for their effort and support to ensure the publication of the 1984-85 yearbook. Special thanks goes to Greg Tyler, editor of the Chonticleer. His help in putting out a special edition of Chonticleer generated numerous book sales. And finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor, Veronica Davis, and to Pat Singleton and Dr. Robert Squatriglia.
