A new registration system can be a lot of headache for students with last names beginning with W or Y. By the time they get to the head of the line, all the classes they Want are closed, except for the favored seniors. The new classrooms are much better than the windowless ones in the Williams-Brice Building. And the additional space in the new offices is really appreciated now that Coastal is a four-year institu- tion. The Student Union and Adminis tration Buildings got a face-lift this fall to keep up with the new building. These unique students pictured on this page get the privilege of going to school twice a day - as a student and as a teacher. Coastal now has a program for student teachers where they can do their practice teaching in l-lorry County closer to their homes. After attending school in regular classes on methods and directed teaching, these practice teachers go out and Student Teachers ilthnlnuuummq X face the students as teachers on their own rights. Leading this double life does have the advantage of helping the prac- tice teachers understand their own professors. xl 1' ff'-',+,'v ll ' 83' ' -- A 4 4 K 5 S, .i .yi E A' gf 5 Q 1 I ' 3 E 'PZ ii. 1' 'W 3 if ' ' 6 l Q f 5 2 ' bp 'H ig 2 lv hw 2 1 ' ' ' 1 ,.,,,.a October 20, 1974--Coastal Carolina opens its doors to the public. All four nights it played, the Lecture Hall was packed. The play itself was about intermingled lives of the employees of a Pajama factory. The plot centers around the growing love affair of Sid and Babe. Their affair is shattered when they take opposite sides in a labor union dispute and Sid is forced to fire Babe. But in the end they get back together again and everybody lives happily ever after . 18 .SQ- Q' 52 K s .bf - 1 L Mx Fas? . Once upon a time, Coastal was visited by a strange little wee person. When he arrived, he tried to find a place to park his little saucer. But, lo and be- hold, the only place left was on top of the Williams Brice Building in Slot 34C. After squeezing in the lot, he decided to visit the lovely building call- ed the library. Maybe he could find some books on this planet to read on the habits of the earth people. But the library had no materials on earthmen. Well, the man was hungry so he went to Cino's Roost to eat. But again, space was a problem. There was no place left to put his food - even after paying all the money he had to his name. Looking around, he realized that the custom here on earth was to leave your food lying on the tables, in some sort of pop art form. But it had to be done in the right manner. Evelyn Snider, RIGHT, was an English and Bible teacher at Conway High before coming to Coastal. A very active person, she is now attending Coastal as a fellow student of many young people she taught in high school. She has participated as guest lecturer in several English and History classes. Coastal has a new policy this year where students over 65 years of age can enroll for free. This has increased attendance in some respects. However, there are still many older students, not yet 65, who attend Coastal and greatly add to the activities. Franklin Holt, PICTURED ABOVE, is a senior majoring in Accounting. Although he is an assistant manager in a chain store, he finds time to attend classes. Frank Pop Alexander is a familiar face around campus. A theatre major, he can usually be found in the Little Theatre, where he tirelessly works day after day. ' s t . . ,,. . , . , ,RA IZ 75 For Coastal Carolina athletics, it has been a year of firsts, with new faces and new sports showing up on the scene. An extensive recruiting by Coach John Vrooman brought a lot of new faces to the baseball team. Randy Owens, a pitcher, and Steve Pearson, a third baseman, joined the team from Spartanburg Junior College. From Virginia came Al jose Anch, a sleek fielding shortstop, and Steve Foltz. Ed Euchler, Keith Yankee Holmok, and Joe Stethers left New York to join the squad along with Blake King and Ricky Avins from USC.. Sumter. Additional new faces were becoming part of the team for the Spring baseball season. Girls' Volleyball entered its first season at Coastal in the fall. It was a rough and rocky initial year for the girls as they managed one victory, which came in their final game. Coastal hosted the girls' State Volleyball Tournament which won acclaim as an overwhelming success. Miss Violet Meade coaching volleyball and basketball marked her first year at Coastal after nine years of heading the Women's Program at USC. For the first time, the basketball team played all four year competition. In the second game of the season, team captain Lonnie Chestnut's Chanticleers sent panic across the state when they upset Newberry, 96- 94, in overtime. Newberry was pre-season pick to win the NAIA District - 6 Title. The team traveled all over the state in their bid for a top seat in NAIA. Girls' basketball entered its second season under the new leadership of Miss Meade. Team captain Cathy Nance's forces were in great hopes of a bright future, although win- ning against established teams proved hard to do. Golf and Tennis under the leadership of Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Dame, respectively, were on the upswing. Established veterans were painting a rosy picture as the teams tuned up for the spring run with only one big question- Will it rain all Spring? Another first at Coastal in the form of a girl's team is the tennis team, making its debut under the able coaching of Violet Meade. An eight game schedule was planned for their first season. Intramurals, with Howard White directing, got new life at Coastal Carolina. Coed volleyball started it off, followed by men's basketball which, as usual, was a big success. Although the win column was lacking for this season, Coastal is growing and improving each year and the teams will soon come into their own and lead our school to victory. -Steve Taylor Sports Information f X y Kenny Houston Chuck Siceloff N lnlail.. . This is a natural process which comes about because of a desire to understand others. The process of learning a foreign language could be just as simple if we were taught to under- stand the importance of human relationships. This does not mean that we would study foreign languages so that we could talk to foreigners or teach a foreign language, or work as a trans- lator or visit in a foreign country. Rather, we would want to understand the people, their language, customs, problems, desires, and beliefs. We would also better understand our roles in the world and our own society as well as our relationship to other people of the world. Foreign Language-Pam Patino The Division of Education would like to utilize this space to honor ALL of our graduating seniors in Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education. We believe that they are very special people because of their desire to enter a profession which demands that they give much of themselves in order to benefit others. Whether they work with children and adolescents in South Carolina or elsewhere, we know that they will always do their utmost to provide to their students the quality of learning that will enrich both the present and future for all of us. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- Itook the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. The English Department helps the stu- dent express himself through litera- ture, the spoken word, and study' of the classics. The need for com- munication is very important as the World seems to grow smaller and smaller and all people are coming in closer contact with each other. The Foreign Language De- partment has adapted to meet this need. Through Religion and Philoso- phy, man begins to communicate with the all important beings - God and himself. The Theatre Depart- ment interests students in com- municating to others through the medium of the stage. Learning to express one's self through art and music is also important in en- abling a student to communicate with himself and with others in his world. 1 . Mack Proctor - English and Sociology 2. This issue originated early in the summer of 1974 with workshops, meetings, and ad and subscription sales, with Mr. Charles L. Watson, a Conway attorney, buying the first edition. Many businessmen listened pa- tiently to sales pitches and then eagerly bought space when they realized that this Atheneum would represent Coastal's four year status and its first senior class. Without this help from our local merchants, this issue would never have fulfilled its purpose. Many new effects that were tried worked, while others did not. Even though the class beauty pic- tures were sent to Peter Columbo Falk, he never acknowledged them. Therefore, the girls were chosen by your popular vote. The senior section is in color, the sports section is in color, and the opening section of the book is different. I hope that you will think the Atheneum truly tells the story of the 74-75 year at Coastal Carolina. I realize that there are things that may have been omitted. I would like to thank the people who were always there by me - jim Beaty who finally found room for the staff, and Jean Casey - this book could never have been printed without her. She kept the staff going with her smile, ideas, money management, and reminders of deadlines. Nellie Smith sold nearly half of our ads, and if you could hear her' sales pitch you would understand why. Karen Yar- borough acted as the Business Manager until October, keeping the books straight. And I am sure all of you have seen Rick Wall sneaking around with his camera - the annual could not have existed without him and his dedication. And lastly, our representative Fred Bostrom with his fantastic ideas fwhen he could make ith, and my Blue Jean King H13 who kept me going! Thanks to all of you. K:I2L15UfN'Si- 160
