emiaz ?fza,e4ecq ENTIRE CLASS OF '55 ATTENDS S, L. O, COUNTY FAIR The 1975 annual San Luis Obispo County Fair in Cambria, California, held a treat in store for the fourteen members of the Class of 1955. This fair marked the date which the gradu- ating class had set twenty long years ago as the time for a class reunion. When I arrived at the immense fairgrounds situated in southern Cambria, I had no idea where to go first. I must have looked quite perplexed because an attractive woman asked me, aren't you Betty Hopper Churchwe1l? I immediately recognized the woman to be my old classmate, Kathleen Fiscalini. We decided to visit the art show and while walking there, I learned that Kathleen was a Conover model in Interspace City, Mars. At the art show, I spotted a delightful oil painting of a village of Navajos. While exam- ining the painting, I found written in the lower, right hand corner-the name, Laura Warren. Kathleen and I looked for Laura who later joined us after washing paint off her face. We girls stopped at a Better Food show and what did we see but a huge pot of Boston- baked beans with a big, blue ribbon attached to it. We instantly knew that Marlene Smithers was near and that she was - right behind the big blue ribbon! Upon deciding to look at our El Bronco '55, our little caravan started towards my car in the parking lot. We couldn't help but notice a fuming, red-headed man who was having trouble with his car motor. As it turned out, the man was Phillip Williams, designer of the first helicauto fhelicopter carl. The morning flew by and before we knew it, the lunch hour had arrived. Kathleen sug- gested that we dine at Aileen's Barbecue Pit. Were we ever surprised when we saw Aileen Neighbors in charge of a block square barbecue pit and steak house! What a layout! After eating, our ever-growing group attended the midget car races. The winner in the loudest, reddest, longest car there turned out to be the terror on wheels, Rayena Fancher. After removing her crash helmet fit was crazier than my hat, she led us to the rodeo grounds. We were in luck and got front row seats. There is nothing dustier than front row seats at a rodeo! The first contest of the day proved to be a thriller. Bucking bronco, after rider, after bronco, came out of that chute, but the only one to stay on the required time was that wiry, red-headed professional cowboy, Nicky Yost. I hadn't seen Tiny that day and asked someone about her. They told me that Tiny was that seven foot clown on stilts in the center of the arena. Comedian Kathryn Warren was a second Martha Raye, but better. She now has six television shows on three nation net- works. There was one member of our class that all of us still knew well. That was Jerry Borges, who had run on the Better America ticket and won the election for president of the United States. Today Jerry was seated with his family in the vast grandstands circling the rodeo grounds. The audience heard a jet plane fly over the fairgrounds. Moments later, they saw a white speck in the sky floating earthward. It landed with a thud and who stepped out from under the white folds but Diane Bianchi! Diane started out on her fabulous career as an airline hostess and ended up as the owner of the United Galaxies Space Line . Near the end of the show, Colonel Reynolds and her battalion of WAFS paraded across the grounds in an excellent military style. Terry had joined the WAFS after finishing high school and had steadily progressed until she had attained the rank of colonel. Later in the evening, we were all, we thought, assembled in a 4-I-I booth. After calling roll, we discovered that one of us besides Foxerace was missing. The absent person was Bruce Wood, a professor at Harvard. The group decided to be patient, because almost any- thing could have happened. Well it did. --We later learned that Professor Wood was trying to prove his new theory about reflection of light in a house of mirrors in the midway. As usual, Bruce became confused, lost his way, and spent three hours in there before finding the exit. From there we went to the Dust Bowl , an open air theater, to hear Foxerace . This was the name which Joseph Fox had taken after his first and successful world recital in 1961. We were all introduced as Joe's guests. After saying good-bye, we each went our own separate ways. I hurried away to the Na- tional Reporters Convention in Washington, D. C. B etty Churchwell
