O, COUNTY FAIR The 1975 annual San Luis Obispo County Fair in Cambria, California, held a treat in store for the fourteen members of the Class of 1955. This fair marked the date which the gradu- ating class had set twenty long years ago as the time for a class reunion. When I arrived at the immense fairgrounds situated in southern Cambria, I had no idea where to go first. I must have looked quite perplexed because an attractive woman asked me, aren't you Betty Hopper Churchwe1l? I immediately recognized the woman to be my old classmate, Kathleen Fiscalini. We decided to visit the art show and while walking there, I learned that Kathleen was a Conover model in Interspace City, Mars. At the art show, I spotted a delightful oil painting of a village of Navajos. While exam- ining the painting, I found written in the lower, right hand corner-the name, Laura Warren. Kathleen and I looked for Laura who later joined us after washing paint off her face. We girls stopped at a Better Food show and what did we see but a huge pot of Boston- baked beans with a big, blue ribbon attached to it. We instantly knew that Marlene Smithers was near and that she was - right behind the big blue ribbon! Upon deciding to look at our El Bronco '55, our little caravan started towards my car in the parking lot. We couldn't help but notice a fuming, red-headed man who was having trouble with his car motor. As it turned out, the man was Phillip Williams, designer of the first helicauto fhelicopter carl. The morning flew by and before we knew it, the lunch hour had arrived. Kathleen sug- gested that we dine at Aileen's Barbecue Pit. Were we ever surprised when we saw Aileen Neighbors in charge of a block square barbecue pit and steak house! What a layout! After eating, our ever-growing group attended the midget car races. The winner in the loudest, reddest, longest car there turned out to be the terror on wheels, Rayena Fancher. After removing her crash helmet fit was crazier than my hat, she led us to the rodeo grounds. We were in luck and got front row seats. There is nothing dustier than front row seats at a rodeo! The first contest of the day proved to be a thriller. Bucking bronco, after rider, after bronco, came out of that chute, but the only one to stay on the required time was that wiry, red-headed professional cowboy, Nicky Yost. I hadn't seen Tiny that day and asked someone about her. They told me that Tiny was that seven foot clown on stilts in the center of the arena. Comedian Kathryn Warren was a second Martha Raye, but better. She now has six television shows on three nation net- works. There was one member of our class that all of us still knew well. That was Jerry Borges, who had run on the Better America ticket and won the election for president of the United States. Today Jerry was seated with his family in the vast grandstands circling the rodeo grounds. The audience heard a jet plane fly over the fairgrounds. Moments later, they saw a white speck in the sky floating earthward. It landed with a thud and who stepped out from under the white folds but Diane Bianchi! Diane started out on her fabulous career as an airline hostess and ended up as the owner of the United Galaxies Space Line . Near the end of the show, Colonel Reynolds and her battalion of WAFS paraded across the grounds in an excellent military style. Terry had joined the WAFS after finishing high school and had steadily progressed until she had attained the rank of colonel. Later in the evening, we were all, we thought, assembled in a 4-I-I booth. After calling roll, we discovered that one of us besides Foxerace was missing. The absent person was Bruce Wood, a professor at Harvard. The group decided to be patient, because almost any- thing could have happened. Well it did. --We later learned that Professor Wood was trying to prove his new theory about reflection of light in a house of mirrors in the midway. As usual, Bruce became confused, lost his way, and spent three hours in there before finding the exit. From there we went to the Dust Bowl , an open air theater, to hear Foxerace . This was the name which Joseph Fox had taken after his first and successful world recital in 1961. We were all introduced as Joe's guests. After saying good-bye, we each went our own separate ways. X, N u , ' -:Q - AH Well, the year of 1954-55 found us back at good old Coast Union High. This year we were high and mighty Juniors and had a great deal to do. There was the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet in May, which was quite a big job. We just seem to have inherited the task. This year the theme was Fantasy Land . Our other activities consisted of food sales, which were always a suc- cess, a dance on February 25th, and the Junior Play which was plenty of fun for everyone. At play practices we got together at students' homes to dis- cuss the play, entitled The Daffy Dills , which was scheduled for March. We also sold school autograph books to the student body. While selecting our class rings we got into great excitement, but finally chose gold with black onyx stones, called the American Beauty . Now that the year is over we are all a little wis er one way or another. We all hope to be able to come back next year as even mightier Seniors than we were Juniors. We hope to return from summer vacation for our last school days, at least the last for some of us, and to graduate from Coast Union High School. Farewell to the Seniors of this year and may they always have good fortune. As for the other students, we hope to see all of them next year. Our class sponsors were: Miss Stringer and Mr. Churchwell Our class officers were: Donna Hardman. We found to our delight, that we were no longer consider ed the babies of Coast Union, but were even being looked up to by the Fresh- men! We started the year off by having ,a dance entitled Hernando's Hide- away . We got into the mystic mood by having the tables decorated with candles which cast eerie shadows on black silhouettes pasted over the walls. At one end was a bar over which refreshments were served. We also had a food sale which added to our steadily growing funds. We are looking forward to having another dance, sponsoring a show, and having other activities. Then our next really big undertaking is the decoration of the auditorium for Baccalaureate. Class officers elected this year were the following: President, Linda Neffg Vice President, Bonnie Woody Secretary, Frankie Sebastiang and Treasurer, Jimmie Evans. We would like to thank our advisors, Mr. Dunn and Mr. Knowles for their cooperation and assistance throughout the year. - 15 ,, 4 I 2 za A FRONT ROW Cl.eft to Righty: Susan Shortridge, Lea Joy Bordegary, 7 V Joyce Williams Sally Madrid, Janice Ingham, Sue Stites, Miss 5- Mauldin SECOND ROW: Pearl Branco, Frances Kramer, Toni EV! A, School opened too early again this year, at least for the members of the Freshman Class who enrolled in Coast Union. Remember how strange it felt to be in high school? It was three weeks before we involuntarily became full-fledged members of the Red and Gold , via initiation. Everyone had a good time but us and we didn't count! The program included a tar and feathering , a can-can dance , and various musical selections . Don't forget the rotten eggs, cold cream, lipstick and that AWFUL limburger cheese! Our dance was held on April Fools' Day. That gave us many ideas for a theme, Of course there were the traditional duties that are willed to every Freshman Class, like restoring the C , That meant lugging and paint- ing a lot of rocks! During football season there were quite a few stiff necks - not from playing football either. It's a disease that seems most common to Fresh- men who decorate goal posts. Our thanks to our Freshman advisors, Miss Mauldin and Mr. Bogert, who helped make our first year a little easier. In spite of everything, all the Freshmen enjoyed their first year and we expect to stay here until we're seniors, if for nothing else than to be able to initiate a new group of freshmen. This year's Freshman officers were: President: Dave Allisong Vice President: Clark Chipmang Secretary: Diane Backensteng Treasurer: Lea Joy Bordegaryg and Business Manager: Donald Wallace. , if ,, , F1 ...,,- P QMY '. h Xh' on in A eele N W f C ' 'riff N I 97 A 1 N' L. .3 XTW . 1 'Q Qi VK , 1 l A , 4,1 1 , N X A ijwxx K I Q' V ., , K if -P' f V I A W I ,Q - ' ,I x - z - ' if L- X 1 37 A 1 K, C - ' '.,' -My if ' ' o f l - - 4, C Q , oo , +1 3 n W W C I A ,yn M fr ,Q ..
