EARLY HISTORY OF COAST UNION DISTRICT AND HIGH SCHOOL Statxstxcs concerning the early hxstory f the Coast Umon High School Dnstrlct are not readily avaxlable but the essentxal facts of thxs narratxve are reliable from memory and varxous contacts wxth t ose formerly assoclated as trustees and teachers The District was organxzed and mstxtuted and nnsplred largely by the cxvx enterprise of the late Senator Elmer S Rxgdon nn the year 1921 The first classes recexved their instructions xn the bunldmgs of the Grammar school xn ambrla as follows one room xn the mam bulldxng one room ln an out building which was used as shop bunldmg by the Grammar School and the work shqp m the Earl Van Gor en propertv on Lee Street The fxrst trustees were ena tor Rlgdon Mrs Eva Tay or and Earl Van Gorden all of ambrxa and Messrs Valonte Guerra an G Tartaglla of ayucos There being no us servxce between Cambria an Gayucos pupxls of hxgh school grades yy ere taught there At Cambrxa the fxrst prxnclpal was Mr Grxgsby assxsted by Mxss Rxch both of whom sery ed for one year Durxng the year 1922 the faculty con sxsted of Mr A O Andrew PYIDCIPRT with Mr Kimber and Miss pearman as sxstxng During thls year the personnel of the board of trustees changed as follows Mrs Taylor moved to olon and Mr Georg DlClC1C was appomted to t ll the yac :nay the death of enator Rlgdon xn December of that year resulted ln the appolntrnent of D F Low ell These condxtlons contlnued until 1924 when the personnel of the trustees became as follows Dr Frank Iowell Geo S Dnclt e Ea l Van Gordon G G Tartaglxa and Valente Guerra and M James wyncs wecamc pxxnupa un er yy mom t e nst L ass was maruate une 1905 composed of Frank Gyorgy Florenre Van Gorden Eunxce Kester ohnny Xvxllxams Donald Fort Ivan toclt and Xvxllxe ITHCLI About this tlme xt was declded to b rld a hlgh school and the present sxte was purthased and the buxldlng erected under a S30 000 00 bond lssue The corner stone of the new bu ldlng was l nd eptember by the Grand Lodge of Masons G1 and Master Day rd Reese Ol'l.lCl3fl!'lg The trustees were agaln changed bv the substxtutlnd of Amos mxthers for Furl Van Golden the facultv COHSISTIHQ of ames Haynes prxncxpal and the folloyyxng as teachers Henry Mlnettx Mxles Boothe Margaret Hmlnd MISS weeney and MISS Loomls A rather mterestmg featuxe of the eirly history preyxous to the remoya to the present sxte nd bulldxng IS that the orlgmal school colors were purple and w hlte w luch w ere not quite satisfactory to the student body and after due consxderatxon and dellbex ITIOH under the IHSPIYBTIOH of Alma Webb now M s xly o Ferxascx who was cheer leader for four years the colors were changed to the present Cardmal and Gold M1 Llavnes was succeeded as p1 mnxpal by IVI Allen T Doggett yy ho w 'ls again succeeded by Mr Hauser and his eftxcxent staff Thls record would not be complete w xthout payxng particular tribute t the fldelxtv and efficiency of Mr ohn lnec who has seryed in agricultural and sclence departments for a number ot veaxs While housed ln the grammar school the puplls of the high school issued a paper under the txtle of Los Pmos Another mterestmg a touchxng actxvxty of t e Class of 27 was the planting of a Redwood tree ln the Hlgh chool grounds xn memory of thelr de ceased classmate Herman Marquart Thxs tree was brought from Humbol t County thas state by Mrs J L Marqxnart Hermans deyoted mother while these recordings may not appear in chronological sequence 1 trust thev may prove of some lnterest to the later members of both the faculty and Student Bodxes Respectfully submxtted RUTH D LOWELL . . , Q V ' .
