NATIONAL HONOR SOUIBTY The Coalten chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools was organized for the first time in Coalton High School this year under the leadership of Mr. Elmer D. Coddin, principal. n N Membership is based upon scholarship, leadership: character and service. Those elected to membership' were Esther Girard5 vice-presidentg Virginia Jerang Helen Miller, secretary-treasurer: Jessie Nethkeng Catherine Rowan5 president. Among the activities of the Honor Society was the preparation and serving of the annual athletic ban- quet in April. The group attended the Tygart Valley' Y8e Coalton basketball game at Tygart Valley school, and attended a Shakespearean play given at Davis- Elkins College in Elkins. STUDENT COUNCIL OF 1948 The second milestone in the history of the Student Council Government of Coalton High School has been gassed. The following officers were elected during he earlier part of the year: President - Helen Miller Vice-Pres. - Mary Kelly Sec.Trees. - Catherine Rowan Regular meetings were held every two weeks on Wednesday at lf:?f. T'e Student Council was faced with many pro'.-: I .noting S0h001 1lf8. It had charge of the 'z los end the distribution of the daily newsrep ro. Among the activities sponsored by the Student . Counoi were the annual Hallowe'en Carnival and a Christmas party given for the student body. Two members, Jessie Nethken and Mary Kelly, had the honor of attending the State Convention of Student Councils at Jackson'e Mill, with our sponsor M . Stalnaker.

SCIENCE CLUB 1947-48 The science club was organized early in the school year with en enrollment of fifteen, The club met during the regular club periods and was devoted to experimentation and the seeking of scientific information. Among the experiments performed during the year, was the testing of fat content of milk, manufacture of gun powder, and the making of Pharaoh's serpents. Other activities included the observation of living and dead organic and inorganic materials under the microscopes, and the manipulation of glass tubing and glass rod. GUEE OHUB The glee club is composed of thirty girls from all classes, with Mrs. Mason as our director. During the year we sang folk songs, negro spirltuals, and hymnie The second semester we used our club periods for the preparation of numbers for the eighth grade and high school commencements, and for the sermon to th! SQ!li.01'Be 1 ALJ .EATION CLUB The recreation club, with Mrs Davies as sponsor, held its first meeting on November l4,'l94? end elected the following officers: Tom Moran, presidentg David Hervey, vice-presidentg Betty Demotto, secre- tary: Joe Ross, treasurer. Hazel Phillips was elected chairmen of the constitution com ittee with ten meme bers. In entertainment committee was formed with dif- ferent members appointed at each meeting. The members planned different games and also planned e party. It ses suggested by the faculty and approved by the club officers, that the club should be composed of the y toortoe members Q! the Junior class, fifteen Sopho- mores, and seven Freshmen. Various meetings were hbld and go es played throughout the year.
