'Swab the deck, sailorlv Whyv, aye, 31r!' cries Bob as he busies himself with the Job. We all wonder if he answers 'I don't Know hown, as he did when the teachers asked him questions. There comes Allene, as happy as can be. A nice housewife she is to keep her husband company. How she used to talk in school! It's Edith who works hard all day long, straightening the library book in order es they come. Remember she was e grand libra- rian when she was a senior in school? Do you think Betty can be happy married to a man twice as old as she is? We all hope she is, for she wanted to be an old man's darling and not a young man's slave. Three of our members have dropped out and two have been gained. Hr. Ieber was the kind and able sponsor of our class when we were Freshmen. As Freshmen we gave, e class party in March of '46. We found the names of many Freshmen on the honor roll and three boys in our class played on the basketball team: - one on the regular five and the other two as sub- stitutes. Our class officers in our Freshmen year were: president, Betty Shipmang vice-president, ' Hazel Phillips, secretary, Mary Kelly: treasurer, Ernestine Hathaway: cheer-leaders, Betty Shipman and Mary Loudin. As Sophamoree we took part in many school ae- tivitiee. The girls had one of the leading teams in girls' basketball. We point with pride to the fact that three of our boys played on the first five of the basketball team and another as a de- pendable eubstitute. we also gave a class party resulting in our class president securing a black eye while playing. Many Sophomore names will be seen on the honor roll. Under the careful guid- ance and sound adtile of our sponsor, Mr. Johnson, we feel that we have made this year a profitable one. we look forward to being the Juniors of Coalton High in '4-8. Uur class officers are: president, Hazel ' Phillipsg vice-president, Tom Guireg secretary, and treasurer, Tom Moran: cheer-leader, Mary Inudin. Our class flower is the white carnation and our motto, 'All for one and one for all.' gps I fii' ' 412 ',,,iJ?,.f-.j3?3fQigi5gi Ef QE'P'LAS',1?g-Ef 'TI'f'EQff1.j?2' 1 x 4 5 'fs ,E 12, I I Y , ., - us -r txa on6p lt lg was .mm Ulf tw! M: ' 7.8onAnrs-1947 First we say 'hats off to a fine school year and to the faculty who made it possible.' Thirty-one strong, the 7 - 8 grade class descended upon Coalton High School in the fall of 1946. The stormy road ahead could not be seen by even the visionary, and it is just as well, for a 'few fell by the wayside.' The task of directing this group fell to Mr. Subs, our Varsity athletic coach. The officers in- cluded Bill Goddin, president: Charles Girard, vice-president: Ronald Jones, secretary-treas- urer: Betty Travis, program chairman: Anita Demotto, cheer-leader. The activities of the year were sponsoring a girls' and boys' basketball team: a tureen supper: participation in the class basketball tournament: assembly program: exchanging of Christmas gifts and valentine greetings. One m ber, Bill Goddin, was honored with member- ship in the student council: Anita Demotto was honored by being elected assistant cheer-Iader for the school. Every member of the class was active in the What Virginia Club. The big and final activity was a picnic and hike the day be fore graduation. Thus MayQl947 marks another milestone in the lives of the members of this class - a class living in a world at least at peace with mankind. We the 7 - 8 grade else of Coalton High School want to thank Mr. Goddin, and our teachers for the help they have given u8o i I ' .'P. .Fl ' 4 ' T 4 ' :yd-'Q 5' .5 -' ' , ,- mind: V- .:1,, ' ,. Many problems affect- ing slhool life were handled by the student council. We sponsored a carnival early in the fall, for the benefit of the foot-ball team. A dinner was held on April 50, for the members of the student council and faculty. The dinner was served in the home economics rooms of the schoolg the regular meeting of the council followed the meal. A S S E M B L I E S Throughout the year various classes and groups have presented programs before the entire student body. Among those of special interest were the Christmas program, the installation of the officers of the student council, and the last, which was a fashion show presented by the Home Economics classes displaying and modeling the garments made during the last six weeks of school. fy, 1. ,:,'.s, i , .3,, . ,vu M ..,' 5. , ,'g ,srl 31' . B A S KLE T B A L L Another basketball season has come to a close. Of the games scheduled, the Varsity team won three: the Junior High team won all but four, and the Rc- sorves won two. Throughout the season and at the tournament the team showed the sportsmanship that has come to be a part of Coalton High in the past year. Though several games lost were only by a small margin, the boys bore no grudge, but came back fighting at each encounter. In Carmen Ross, Dick Goddin, Bob Miller, Tom Moran, Jos Silveeter, Victor Masterjoe, and Joe Ross, Coalton has some of the finest prep athletes in the school's history. They have done their best to bring Coalton its share of victories. B A S K E T B A L L I N' R E'V I E I' On December 21, 1946, Coalton High opened the basketball season on the Elkins High floor with a 47-23 loss to a veteran Parsons High School team. The game was played as a benefit for the Infantilo Paralysis Fund. In the second test of the season the Alumni defeated the Vario ity 58-46. Weston, Thomas, T-V, Parsons, and the Alumni took us into camp in the early part of the season by large mar- gins. The Elkins 'B' team, Beverly, Flemington, St. Augustine and Belington High had a much harder time taking the improving Coalton High team. The losing streak was snapped with a victory over Pickens High School on the Coalton floor 49-38. In a return game at Coalton, St. Augustine was de- feated by a margin of four points, 33-29. In the last game of the season the fighting Coalton team defeated the Little Ten Champions, Belington, by the score of 51-46. Revenge was sweet, Coalton hav- ing lost to the Little Ten Champions earlier in the season, the last minute 47-44. The sectional tour- nament saw Coalton High losing to a taller and more experienced Beverly High team, in the first round by a score of 44-23. Captain Cannon Ross was honored by being selected on the all-tournament team. 2399! ipaq: mains- md comet - ' - .:.:a, a i lata Sf ,, -pr f sf 5?
