Hontz HALF MILE RELAY Class B T948 THE RACE: The starter barks, On your marks!, and our lead-off man, Charlie Hontz, slowly, carefully, slips into his deep starting holes that are iust cut to fit. Get set! Tails come up - all seven of them - and then the gun. They're off - Charlie coming in from the seventh lane to vie with the leaders - he drops back a little - but there's that orange-shirted second man beckoning him on, and he calls on that reserve that brings him up neck and neck with the lead-man, Swartz of Minersville. The baton is passed, and Trimmel spurts into the lead. That long, well-measured stride brings him down the straight-a-way a few yards in front of the next best man. The pass is good, and off goes Rilo, fighting his heart out to stay up front so that our anchor will have no excuses. And out front he is when he passes the baton to Ambrose. And now watch that stride eat up space. Who can overtake a lead like that? Not one of the 6 competing teams came close, and we win our heat in l:34.5. But there is still a question. Suppose the second heat betters our time? Wait and see. Camp Hill runs off with that one - and we wait breathlessly for the time announcement. Here it is! l:36 - and we're the State one-half mile champs in Class B. Hail to the Champs - Hontz, Trimmel, Rilo, and Ambrose!
