'lil-l Twenty-five years have passed since the new high school played host to its first graduating class. Gone are the days of graduation in Burns' Hall. Gone are the days of the three-year high school in the East Ward Building. In their stead has risen a modern building with an expanded course of studies. Each succeeding year has witnessed the school striving for increased educational offerings for its students. Down through these years, down through the vast flood of our alumni, down through our graduating class, and beyond, we perceive one thing common to all the students, it is a quiet feeling of pride in our school, it is a deep reverence for our school's achievements ever since the days when those novices, those under-dogs, the l922 football squad set the standard by resolutely digging in and overcoming the champion Lansford team. May this spirit carry on to our golden anniversary - and beyond. A Our High School in the Past before the construction of the new building at Sixth and Phillips Streets. 1 sv e Q- it am A. . Q Fond memories come surging back as we dream of those good old days. Crossing the threshold of our Alma Mater for the first time in l945, we were guided through the ceremonies of Freshman Week - and we began to learn the meaning of humility. Our second year brought us closer to feeling the great vitality of the school's manifold activities as we began cautiously to participate in Football, Basketball, Oratory, Band, Journalism, Drama, and a host of other interests. Now we were a large part of that vital thing which has become known as The Tiger Spirit. In our Senior year, as leaders of the school's maior activities, we heard the whisper of responsibility urging us to our best efforts. School Jazz Band Student demands for a popular dance band have led to the organization of the Coaldale High School Jazz Band. Under the directing baton of Professor George Matrician, these boys have rapidly formed into a rhythmic ring of harmony. I Their first appearance in December brought forth strong evidences of popular approval. Our students have had the privilege and the pleasure of listening to, and dancing to, the music of this group. A paris... The competitive spirit has always characterized the activities of our school, and especially has this been true of our sports. ln football, basket- ball, and track our boys have constantly reflected the true spirit of sports - a will to win against any odds. We need merely glance at the records to show how this will to win has followed through. Many a victory has been won when victory seemed impossible. ln the background of all this kind of activity is the School Board, whose active interest in all phases of sport has contributed substantially in making the sports program a success. We must also point to the fine administrative work of the faculty managers, Mr. Randolph Harvey and Mr. Charles Revtyak, as instrumental in the success of our teams. And we cannot overlook another factor that has been prominent throughout this quarter-century, that is, the complete interest of our school and our town in sports. Student and parent have always had an unfailing interest in athletics. From these have emerged the driving Tiger Spirit, and from these have emerged our long record of victories in all the maior forms of sport. Now let us look at this year's record . . MAJORETTES First row: M. Yurchak, P. Sla- koper, C. A. Welsh, H. Andel, E. Kidda, M. Thomas, J. Mar- tin, J. Cipko. The driving spirit of our teams shows most clearly in the peppy cheering of our cheerleaders. These few have done a splendid iob in organizing our cheers into an effective force that inspired our boys to their greatest efforts. Need we mention that football game, Coaldale versus Miners- ville, to show what that spirit can do? The zip, the zest, of these girls in leading our cheers has been that extra spiritual force which has kept our teams on the victory road. The high-steppin' Maiorettes are dis- tinctive throughout the Panther Valley. Reflecting the proud and unyielding spirit of our teams, these girls hold a popular place in the hearts of all sports fans. Marching in formations coordinated with the band, they have given to football that added color which makes the game an in- spiring spectacle. Band plus Cheerleaders plus Maiorettes has produced a formidable element in marching us on to more victories. L. Harvey, F. Ruslavage, D. Rudenko, V. Konski, R. Roberti, S. Herbert. CHEERLEADERS FOCTBALL The Orange and the Black had another successful year in football, winning eight and losing three. The drive for the conference crown came within a hairs breadth of success. A versatile backfield working closely with two great ends made our team a constant threat to our opponents. Coaches: Mr. T. P. Raymer Mr. S. J. The highlight of the game was a brilliant 70-yard punt return by Charlie Hontz for a Tiger score. Hontz led the scoring parade with two touchdowns. COALDALE VS. NEWPORT TOWNSHIP On Friday, September 19, a rugged Newport Township team invaded Coal- dale only to be beaten 7-6. Bob Praskac, the big gun in the Coaldale attack, scored a touchdown and suc- cessfully converted the placement, which proved to be the winning point of the game. COALDALE VS. MINERSVILLE On the night of September 26, a scrappy Coaldale aggregation jour- eyed to Minersville to defeat a heavily favored Minersville eleven in a close fought battle. After trailing by the score of 14-6 at half-time, Coal- dale High, with a do-or-die spirit, came from behind and went on to win in the dying seconds of the important battle. When the final whistle blew Coaldale was on the long end of an 18-14 score. COALDALE VS. TAMAQUA Tamaqua iourneyed to Coaldale on the night of October 3, attempting to lower the colors of an undefeated Coaldale eleven. They came out of the ball game on the short end of a 24-O score. Mickey Gregus, sub- stitute quarterback, was the big gun of the Coaldale attack. COALDALE VS. READING The following Saturday, Coaldale stepped out of their conference grounds and iourneyed to Reading to battle a much bigger team. Reading nosed out the Coaldale boys by the narrow margin of 7-6. CoaldaIe's only score came cn a pass from Praskac to Lopez. COALDALE VS.
