SEN IORS N 00: Class Colors: Blue and Gold Class Flower: Yellow Tea Rose Class Motto: Not for Self, for Country. 00: A Class History On a bright September day in the year 1941, a cheerful, sportive group entered Coal' dale High School as Freshmen. Several Weeks passed before We became accustomed to the routine of the school. Seemingly we were little noticed except for the week of Whimsical initiations. After a summer which was enjoyed by all, We returned in the fall to commence with eager enthusiasm as Sophomores. During this year, our first financial achievement, The Turkey Hop, Was unsurpassed. As Juniors the tribulations of World War II struck our school. Undauntedly We supplemented the social season with our Prom In the fall of 1943 we began, as Seniors, the last unforgettable year of school together. Our boys were on the Hall out for sports. On December 8, 1943 the Senior Class Play, Don't Take My Penny, marked a new height in dramatic attainment. As we approached graduation, we found that many of our classmates had left us to join in the fight for Freedom The class of 1944 is indeed proud of these boys. As never before, the class of '44 really has something to be thankful for-the education so very much needed to bring about peace once more. Equipped with the confidence, hope and good will that we have acquired here in school, and with a little good luck, we ought to make our Alma Mater beam with pride at our success. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Each year the Senior Class Play is probably the greatest event of the activities of the class. Don't Take My Penny was presented at matinee and evening performances on the night of December 8th, 1943. The play concerned the experiences of a teenfaged girl who wanted to be a movie actress in Hollywood. A series of comical events occurred which prevented Penny's embarking on a Hollywood career. The cast of the play, with Misses Helen Hoben and Mary McElhenney, who direct' ed the play, worked zealously to make the play a success. Patience and hard work were well rewarded by the capacity audience and its generous response. Seated: D. Byble, A. Diaz, J. Skapik, J. Novirsky, D. jones, P, Sheers, T. Lewis, J. Zahora. The time of the play was the third birthday of the Christ Child. It portrayed the love of Mary for her Son and her fear for His future. Because the play emphasized Mother love, it was dedicated to all Mothers. Miss Helen Hoben composed a lovely song in honor of Mother ln a brief ceremony preceding the seasonal part of the program, Miss Helen Pavlik sang this song. The entire program was beautiful. All the members of the cast and the chorus def serve praise for the spirit in which they performed. The play was presented on Sunday evening, December 19th. Miss Helen M. Hoben and Miss Mary P. McElhenney directed the play. Miss Mary P. McElhenney Miss Helen M. Hoben Bottom Row: D. Bybel, M. Ginda, A. Diaz. D. jones, W. Charles, A. Kononchuk. Second Row: j. Blasko, A. M. Wargo, H. MINSTREL i'The Sunny Side Up Revue was the title of the annual high school minstrel this year. lt was one of the most successful minstrels ever presented by the students. The program contained its usual variety of entertainment. Soloists and chorus did justice to all the well selected musical numbers. The opening number gave a little advice that we should always follow, nKeep Your Sunny Side Up. The end men made each performance a mirthful one for the audience. MINSTREL SKIT C00 i'The Early Worrnl' was the brief one act play that followed the minstrel. The cast of charf acters included three boys and three girls, each of whom added to the amusement of the show. Four performances were given, two on February 16th, and two on February 17th. Miss Helen M. Hoben, Miss Mary P. McElhenney and Mr. Theodore Lithgow were faculty members in charge. Seated: L. Zulic. M. Koperna. Standing: M. Piech, J. Skapik, H. Folk, G. Gazdik. AN OLD FASHIONED CHARM OPERETTA An Old Fashioned Charm was the operetta presented by the Coaldale High School, April 26th and 27th of last year. The operetta was gay with costumes and bright lights, delightful with sweet music and humorous speaking parts. The cast and the large chorus of singers and dancers gave four performances at which they received applause they well earned. The Bal Masque was the hit of the show. The operetta was under the capable direction of Misses Helen M. Hoben and Mary P. McElhenney. Miss Helen M. Hoben Miss Mary P. McElhenney Mr. Theodore Lithgow MAY QUEEN and ATTENDANTS Miss Anne Kramer was crowned May Queen at the annual May Day Exercises of the Coaldale School District. Our next game was with Lebanon High, a member of the big H15 Conference. We were defeated by the Cedars to the tune of 13fO. Our boys put up a great game but lackf ed the punch to score. This game marked a new grid relation between the two schools. Mahanoy City was our next opponent, and we came through in the final period to score as Vandak intercepted a forward pass deep in the Maroons' territory to set up the touchdown, and give the Tigers the game by a 7fO score. In the game with Blythe Township, and the Tigers really went to town as McGeef han passed 25 yards to Vandak for the firstfperiod touchdown, and in the second quarter he passed to Puschak for 20 yards and another touchdown. McGeehan and Vandak worked another pass for 30 yards for the third period touchdown. After the Tigers had intercepted to break up Blythe's fourth period scoring threat, the club marched for its Hnal score which was registered by Pisklak on a plunge from the one yard line, the only sixfpointer to be registered by the Tigers in this manner. Final score was 26fO in our favor. Our big game in October with the Blue Raiders of Tamaqua High was next on the list. The Tigers played their best brand of ball against Ken Millen's team as they battled them to a 6f6 tie in a hard fought game. The Tigers came through with their lone touchf down in the first period, only to have the Blue Raiders come fighting back to push over a touchdown in the final period and put the finishing touches to a great game. The Maroons of Nesquehoning High defeated the Tigers in a close ball game, 7f6. Coaldale came through with the touchdown when Joe Pisklak intercepted a Maroon pass on his own 30 yard stripe and shook himself loose for a 70 yard touchdown. Coal Township High was the next opponent on the schedule. They pushed across three touchdowns as a result of passes and downed the Tigers by the score of 2OfO. Then the Tigers went to play the Red Tornadoes of Mount Carmel High and were defeated. The score read 7:O, Our team really played good ball, especially the line, but throughout the game they could not penetrate Mount Carmel territory. We played another big l5 school, Hazleton High, a newcomer on our schedule. Coaldale was defeated 3337. The only touchdown was a result of a pass from Kacik to Puschak the right end, over the center of the line, when he side stepped a would be tackler, and traveled 55 yards to score, standing up, in the end zone. Next we engaged Minersville High in a good ball game as we racked up four touch' downs to the Battling Miners two tallies. This gave us our fourth victory of the season. The final score was 2644. Pisklak and McGeehan were the ground gainers in this battle. The game of games, which is always played on Thanksgiving Day with Lansford High, was the final one of the season for the Tigers. Lansford, with one of its best teams in years, was supporting a 10 game winning streak without a defeat. The Orange and Black eleven were confident they could stop this streak but it was not to be and Coaldale went down to defeat by the score 28f6. Our only score in the game came on a pass thrown from Kacik, caught by Dalto in the end zone to set up the touchdown. Our season was not too good for 43. Better luck next year is the wish of the 1944 athletes who have played their last game for Coaldale High. SENIOR ATHLETES joseph Pisklak William Shanosky Michael Rohall F First Row: R. Murphy, L.
