BOARD or EDUCA ION The members of the Board of Education in coniunction with the administrative officers of our school have, during this past year, made many notable contributions to the welfare of our Alma Mater. The term of office of Mr. Norman Rich- ards, expired January l. His devoted loyalty and unstinted service will be sorely missed. However, his place has been very adequately filled by the election of Mr. Edward Edwards, whose many sterling qualities promise achievements of note. We appreciate the fact that all the members of the Board of Education are busy with their personal affairs, yet find time to make a worthy contribution to the cause of Education in Coaldale. Mr. Stephen Radocha, Jr. has been appointed to succeed his father, recently deceased. Mr. Randolph B. Harvey, A. B., M. A. Supervising Principal Three years ago, Mr. Harvey was elected Supervising Principal of Coaldale Schools. During his tenure, many notable improvements in our schools, both in physical equipment and scholastic achieve- ments, are apparent. Although there is not space to list these improvements here, we know you will agree with us when we say, Coaldale Schools are progressing. ALMA AT MR. W. E. BERGER MR. T. M. STUDENT OOPERATIVE The Student Cooperative Association was organized in the fall of 1934 for the purpose of bringing about cooperation between the student body and administra- tion. The many problems which arise in the home room discussions are further dis- cussed and acted upon at the regular weekly sessions of this active and aggress- ive Association. SSOCIATION This group has undertaken various activities such as maintaining a consession- stand at football and basketball games, erecting Christmas decorations throughout the building and aiding the Teacher's Association in various ways. This group proved to be most successful this year under the capable direction of its president, Leonard Weiksner. SEATED Left to Right: Miss Catherine Gildea, A. This was an important occasion in the history of Coaldale High School. Why? Because the iustly famous class of 1942, at that time, first presented itself at the por- tals of our Alma Mater. ln number we were HO, in color we were green, in deportment we were noisy. However, we were earnest, sincere, and above all, eager to learn. Of course, not many of our number participated in varsity athletics or other activities this first year. However, the ground- work was laid for future greatness. ln our Sophomore year, many 'of our number participated actively in extra- ciricular activities. Several of our boys made the varsity football team and reflected a vast deal of credit upon themselves, their class and their school, by playing a bang-up game through- out the entire season. Especially notable was the work of Tokarczyk and Harb. Not only did they succeed in making the varsity in their Sophomore year but have played a good, consistent, game throughout their school careers. ln basketball, Tokarczyk and Bitsko were our two representatives on the varsity squad. They acquitted themselves creditably and have been twin towers of strength on the squad ever since. ln our Junior year we really went to town, with the result that our influence in school affairs was much more keenly felt. In addition to Tokarczyk and Harb, our representatives on the football squad were, Zlock, Richards, Katchak, Puschak and Ganga- ware. These boys participated in one of Coaldale High SchooI's most successful grid- iron season. In basketball too, we were more com- pletely represented by the fact that Bartal made the squad, in addition to Tokarczyk and Bitsko. Our Junior Prom was a great success. More than three hundred persons danced to the music of Os Werley on the evening of May 29. Not only was the' dance a social success but a substantial contribution was made to our class treasury. However, it was during this, our last year, that we really felt as if we had devel- oped fully our latent powers. ln our Senior year, of course, our class came into the full bloom of its potential capabilities. In addition to those before mentioned, Johnson and Andel also made the football team and performed distinctively. ln basketball, Zlock, Polischak, Andel and Johnson gained places on the squad, in addition to those who played during previous years. They made a valuable contribution to the success of our team. At the first class meeting of our Senior year, we elected offcers, adopted our budget, and agreed to sponsor the l942 Stentor, the staff of which had been elected the previous year. Because of the postponed opening of school, lthe result of the polio epidemicl several of our planned activities were curtailed. This was true of our autumn dance. However, once school was under way, an accellerated program of classes and all activities kept each and everyone of us extremely busy. Football games were held more frequently, class assignments were stepped up and school work generally proceeded at a more rapid pace than usual. Our classmates who were in the band were especially enthused about the new military uniforms purchased for their organi- zation. However, this enthusiasm spread to the entire student body and community when the band appeared at the Lansford game in their natty orange and black regalia. Our play, The Tin Hero, was a very successfull production. The auditorium was filled to capacity, with a crowd of enthusi- astic lovers of the drama. The play was also more successful than usual, financially. While only lOO of us remain to gradu- ate, we are determined that we shall repay our nation and community for the training we have received. We shall serve our nation in any position to which we may be called. ROBERT MITCHELL Doc MILTON CRAIG Milt Academic Academic Why, Shar What propagated thatexlremely Bond 1 2 3 4 moronic action? It was the night of December l5th. A large and enthusiastic audience awaited the first act of The Tin Hero, a farce comedy in three acts. The antics of Mrs. Goodyear, an exag- gerating mother, the shyness of Douglas, and the continued difficulties he encountered, TIN Heno kept the audience on the edge of their seats from the overture to the final curtain. To sound the praises of any particular actor or actress would be very unfair, for all who participated deserve much credit and made a fine showing. It can well be said, The Tin Hero, was a success in ever sense of the word. Directed by MR. O. S. KEEBLER SEATED-Left to Right: M. Lutchkus, L. Bachkus, S. Domin, l. Julo. STANDING-Left to Right: R. The minstrel was patriotic in tonef thus reflecting the spirit of the times in which we live. The skit was designed to be humorous and succeeded admirably in entertaining the audience. The proceeds were directed to the fund used to promote an enlarged program of Visiual Education. lt would be unjust to praise any one or several of the participants, inasmuch as all acquitted themselves very creditably indeed. UNE- - THE PERETTA 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 Last year's Operetta given on the even- ings of April 23rd and 24th was generally conceeded to be one of the best ever pre- sented in our auditorium. Tune ln was ultra-modern in the sense that it used as its theme the microphone and all that broadcasting implies. Soloists, groups, and the entire ensemble captivated the attention of the audience with sparkling wit, rollicking tunes, and superb histrionics. We hesitate to mention any outstanding star because were we to do so we would find it difficult to avoid being unjust to all the others who so ably contributed their support. The operetta has established itself as one of the outstanding musical events in the show season of our high school. May it continue to prosper as it has in the past. It was presented under the capable direction of Misses McElhenney and Hoben and Mr. Lithgow. MISS HELEN HOBEN MR. T. M. LITHGOW MISS MARY McELHENNY Upper Picture: SEATEDW left to Right: E. Davis, P. Four girls and four boys, one of each representing Nesquehoning, Summit Hill, Lansford, and Coaldale repsectively, par- ticipated. With her oration entitled, Peace For All Time, Jean Stanley represented our school in the girls' contest while John Macatician, with his oration entitled, Man Looks Up, RATO RY represented us in the boys' contest. While neither of our contestants won this year, both acquitted themselves creditably and re- flected a vast deal of credit on themselves and on their school. Marvin Greenberger of Lunsford High School won the boys' contest and Jean Rose of Summit Hill High School received the nod from the iudge in the girls' contest. Musical numbers, both vocal and in- instrumental, added interest and entertain- ment value to the program. JEAN LOUISE STANLEY JOHN MACATICIAN lst Row---Left to Right: A. Keer, M. Thomas, J. UEEN AND ADIES 1 May Day ceremonies at Coaldale High School are always received by the student body and townspeople with genuine and sincere approval and enthusiasm. , The festivities are not confined to stu- dents ofthe high school. Each grade building has its part in the program and contributes much to the colorful array of talent. Last year's excersises were no excep- tion to the rule. As a matter of fact, those 94 l exercises were voted the most elaborate and colorful ever to be presented on our athletic field. Several thousand students and adults, themselves presenting a colorful spectacle, watched the affair with enthusiastic interest. Miss Marion Edwards, May Queen, and her comely attendants were the cynosure of all eyes. To attempt to describe anyone or several of these lovely ladies in detail is impossible. lt is sufficient to say that they all looked lovely as you can easily see by looking at the picture above. 1942 Miss Hom Rose Konsko MAY Q u EEN Anna Kohler Sci-looL or THE IR l MR R B HARVEY Left to Right: L. Harrison, A. Diaz, C. Gangaware, T. Willing, O. Zenzel, l. Julo For the past two years the Coaldale schools have been broadcasting over station WAZL. These programs have been at different times in the charge of the different buildings of our school system except for the fact that the high school has had a part in every broadcast. The various grade buildings presented programs taken directly from the classroom fthat is, actual classes were often pre- sented over the air. ln the days of yester- year, parents often visited school. Now, the school comes directly into the home. Mother W. Richards, H. Pavlik, M. Yelito can listen to her son or daughter recite without leaving her work. The high school programs more often made use of talent capable of entertaining the listening public. Mr. Harvey usually makes use of the broadcasting facilities to announce decisions on school policy and to extend his greetings to our student population and patrons of our school. The broadcasts have been eminently successful. This is due in no small measure to the untiring efforts of Misses Mary McElhen- ney and Helen Hoben. L fdf gf f iw -x 3' ' 4 A x. The high quality of musiclfurnished bythis organization is due, of course, to diligent practice and frequent rehearsal. Both Mr. Jones and the members of the band have been diligent in this respect. The Coaldale-Lansford football game on Thanksgiving Day, always a colorful event, was made more so by the striking appearance of our band and marching group when they appeared on the field in their natty, new, military uniforms. These uniforms were purchased by popular sub- scription under the direction of the Faculty Band Committee. Also worthy of special mention are the Maiorettes who received enthusiastic ap- plause everytime they appeared with the band in their white satin ballet costumes. These girls were selected by the Band Committee from candidates numbering more than fifty, on the basis of attractiveness, personality, and grace of carriage. Each morning, our assembly is made more impressive and pleasant by the fact that the Mixed Chorus, under the direction of Miss Hoben and accompanied by her on the Hammond Electric Organ, singsfor us, religious and patriotic songs. As a group, we are deeply indebted to these young people for the fidelity and ex- cellence of the musical service they render us every school day. Needless to say the singing at our morn- ing devotional exercises has improved one hundred per cent. Many excellent voices will be lost to the group by graduation, but we trust they will be replaced by others from the under-classes. .fe 'If' 'Z' f fE2'.f.. The Orange Swing Band, more popular- ly known as the ORANGES, render a very definite and pleasant service to our school. It is they who make it possible for us to enioy the very best of modern music at our informal dances. Not only is th-eir music sweet and rhythmic but arrayed in natty uniforms and equipped with streamlined music stands a few years ago, they present an inspiring appearance from the orchestra stand. In addition to the splendid service which the ORANGES render the school, this organi- zation presents an excellent opportunity for those of our musicians who desire to master the intricacies of modern iazz music. Many graduates from the Oranges are playing in regional professional bands where they are making reputations for themselves. Also, several former players from this organ- ization now play military music in Army,Navy, Marine Corp and Air Corp bands. .IYPING CLUB FIRST ROW ISec:tedI Lett to Right: U. Herring, M. Blosko, M. Since that time it has rendered a splendid service io the student body. ln the past three years since the organi- zation of this patrol, not one single traffic accident has marred the physical well-being of our students, notwithstanding the fact that, especially at noontime, when school is dismissed for lunch, the traffic on those streets adiacent to our school, is very heavy. IGER ABLOID STAFF The Tiger Tabloid, our monthly news- paper was organized last year. Since its inception, it has emphasized news events of our school, interesting facts and features of the world at large and personal items of our student body that would never appear in the daily press. The Tiger Tabloid has been well received by the students of our High School and merits the support of everyone. lt fills a very definite need. The success of our newspaper is due largely to the untiring efforts of Mr. Polansky, the faculty adviser, who has given unreservedly of his time and talent. The editor-in-chief, Miss Dorothy Klep- pinger, has been an inspiring leader of the Tiger Tabloid Staff. Under her direction each month, the various staff members have dug up news, interesting facts and features which when prepared by them for publication, have added interest to the school paper. The Tiger Tabloid has been well designed, competently written and expertly managed. We wish next year's staff and Mr. Polansky every success in the continuance ofthis excellent pub- lication. f f I , mx fix 419 , . Cheerleaders They are onlyseven in number but these seven peppy, pretty, and enthusiastic girls have proven themselves entirely capable of leading our entire student body in cheers and songs for our athletic teams. If school spirit is important to the team in its efforts to win, then certainly, these seven girls merit the appreciation and grati- tude of every single student of our school for the splendid service they have rendered. To be sure we would have cheered without them but our cheering would have been unorganized and not nearly so effective. Our band, our cheerleaders and our cheering section all working together constitute a very formidable element in the determination of our team's chances of victory. Athletic Board The Athletic Association Board of Coal- dale High School is in direct charge of all athletic activities. This board, composed of Board of Education members, faculty mem- bers, and elected representatives from the student body, meet monthly to determine the athletic policy of our school. In their hands is the responsibility for the purchase of equip- ment, maintainence of the field and promotion of games. We, of the student body appreciate the efforts they have made because we have been the direct beneficiaries thereof. Athle- tically our high school has prospered and is prospering under the direction of this very able board. . Our inexperienced backfield showed some signs of weakness as was natural in the first game of the season. The entire team showed considerable promise, but had to bow to Tamaqua when the only score of the game was made by Steigerwalt. The game ended, Coaldale O Tamaqua 7. Due to the late opening of the season our games were played quite close to gether. The Tigers' second engagement was with Blythe Township. Blythe came to Coaldale to play on the evening of October TO. After the grueling contest with Tamaqua, our boys had scarcely enough time to prepare for this contest. lt was a hard fought game from beginning to end. Franko for Blythe scored on a pass into the end zone while a pass Palkovich to Tokarczykfput six points on the scoreboard for the Tigers. The final score -Coaldale 6 -ffr Blythe 7. The trusty toe of Joe Paskosky booted the all important extra point making the final result, Coaldale 7V -Nesquehoning 6. After pounding relentlessly at each others line and gambling desperately with forward passes, the Coaldale and McAdoo teams staggered off the field with nothing to show for their efforts but bumps and bruises. For Coaldale, it was a brilliant line making holes for an alert, hard-driving backfield, for Mc- Adoo, Postupack supported an excellent team by his excellent kicking. A week later Summit Hill visited us with high hopes of conquering the fighting Tigers but found themselves on the receiving end of smashing blows that cast their hopes to earth. 24-O was the final score. Hazle Township put up a somewhat better fight but had to be content with a 26-i3 defeat. Thursday evening, November 20, Mahanoy City came to town. The Maroons had a heavy fast team, promising trouble for the local athletes. From whistle to whistle this game was hard fought, with all the scoring being done during the first half. During the intermission, rain descended causing the field to become a sea of mud. This condition, of course, made ball handling very risky, with the result that the strategy of both teams called for straight football. The battle ended, Coaldale 13- Mahanoy City 13. There followed an interval of unrelenting activity in preparation for the contest with our arch rivals Lansford. Thanksgiving Day dawned clear, cool, and crisp. Shortly after noon the crowd began filling the Lansford Stadium. This gigantic holiday crowd, the greatest to witness this classic contest, was in a festive mood, marred only by personal anxiety for the outcome of the contest. After a colorful display of music and marching by the bands, marching clubs, maiorettes, etc. of the two schools, during which time our band made its appearance in their brand new uniforms, with winsome maiorettes to lead them, the officials called the captains together, the coin was tossed and the game was on. At half time the Tigers were leading 7-O. lt looked like the same old story. Then came that hectic second half during which two elusive, speedy gentleman of the opposition demonstrated the technique of end running. Petko circled our left end for a tally. Boyle, a few minutes later, did exactly the same thing around our right end. Account for it? We can't. We had completely outplayed them until that time. After this second touchdown, the Tigers again went to work with a will, carrying the ball from their own fifteen yard line, 79 yards down the field and were within scoring distance when the final whistle blew. This was the 20th of the Lansford- Coaldale series. Of the total games between our two schools, Lansford has won 4 and Coaldale 14. So our season ended with Wif'lS'4, lossesf-3, tiesf-2. While it is true our school did not win the championship, our student body and school patrons enioyed witnessing an excellent brand of ball through- out the winter. Our players tried hard, T SUME showed good sportmanship, and more often than not won their game. While eight seniors will be lost to next year's team by graduation, Mr. Kalen hopes to build a splendid aggregation from the members of the Junior Varsity. Gym Team The l942 Varsity Gym Team captured the imagination and excited the admiration of those who attended its annual exhibition on April 23. This year in keeping with the spirit of the times, military drills and dances were featured. These found ready acceptance on the part of the public. Our congratula- tions to Mr. Kalen and Miss Evans. Track Team As you can easily understand from look- ing at the results of the I94l track season shown on the preceeding page, last year's team had a very successful season. Our team participated in several dual and invitation meets with very gratifying results. Enthusiasm for the sport, careful training and efficient coaching, undoubtedly were responsible for a track season, the results of which, far exceeded our fondest expecta- tions. For three years, we have been unde- feated in dual meets, while last year we won the District ll meet for the second time in succession. This year for the first time in our school's history, we won the class B State Champion- ship. f-'gags' , 1' aff '2 'w J I Q - dzfkigx jvdvjfiiiw FN' ,A JWJFJ A if OMECOMING DAY , .1 ,A ,U v 1 . ..-5 fix f .13 K ox' ln, 6 x X 3 lf, L nv MN YW W N XX NN N X xx , ,An , 1 5 ' , 1 Anvumsfmmrs C'OllI1D!I-17Z6'7lf.S' of. . .
