Student Cooperative Association OFFICERS DANIEL POLANSKY . President WILLIAM HOFFMAN Vice President DOROTHY SNYDER . Secretary HELEN ZULIC . Treasurer The Student Cooperative Association was organized for the purpose of creating cooperation among the students and between the student body and the faculty, and to educate the students in self-government. That it has suc- ceeded is shown beyond doubt by the tact that, the S. C. A. now chooses its own professional assembly programs, conducts intra-murals, and purchases educational and recreational movies. The S. C. A. has also decided many questions originating from students concerning school government. Other projects ot the S. C. A. during the past year were: the Freshman Reception, sales at varsity games, football programs, dances, and the minstrel. Leaders of our GMM Lest We For-get! A Saga of the Seniors ln the limited space here provided it is impossible to give a year by year description of our class activities. We entered Coaldale High School with one hundred thirty membersg now there are only ninety-one of us. During the past four years the members of our class have been active in extra-curricular activities. Eleven boys played varsity football, three of us played basketball, fourteen were in the band, three played in the jazz band, fourteen participated in track, twenty-four were in the minstrel, and eleven in the Senior Class Play. The members are elected by the class in their junior year, but cannot become members of the society until their Senior year. Each year the Society takes over the Panther Valley Page of the Allentown Morning Call. Members of the Society collect the news, write it, edit it, and send it by teletype to Allentown. After all the news is dispatched, the members of the society drive to Allentown and follow their news through the newspaper plant until at about 2:00 A. M. they see the papers come oft the press. Following indulgence in coffee and doughnuts, the home- ward journey is begun. This is a very enjoyable and interesting project. The requirements necessary to be elected to the Society are: high scholastic standing, authorship of an acceptable article which has been published, and recommendation by Mr. Keebler, faculty advisor of the society. The main purpose of this society is to write and publish the Stentor. lts members and particularly Mr. Keebler, are to be com- mended tor arousing an interest in journalism among the students. National Honor Society Fourteen members of the Senior class were elected to mem- bership in the National Honor Society. Membership in this organization is very select and an exclu- sive privilege. Selection ot members is based upon scholarship, leadership, character and service. The chief advantages ot having a chapter of the National Honor Society in our school are: lt creates an enthusiasm for scholarship throughout the schoolg it encourages a desire on the part of the members to render service to the school and to the com- munity and it causes the pupil to evaluate himself and to see it there are elements ot leadership Within him. Miss Mcllhenney is the faculty advisor of this organization. All members ot the faculty join in selecting members from the Senior Class. Congratulations to those who have been elected to the Sec- ondary school equivalent ot Phi Beta Kappa. Left to right: H. Zulic, H. Radocha, A. Sobolosky, J. Windus, May queen, B. May Queen and Court In reviving May Day, our school presented a brilliant pageant climaxed by the presentation of the May Queen and her court. Beautiful in their gowns, the May Queen and court, inspired much applause and many expressions of admiration by students, faculty and townspeople. We could, with justice, attempt a verbal description of these girls of splendor but feel, being mere humans, that we would fail to express adequately the impression of loveliness made on our minds. The above photograph does not do the girls justice. How- ever, one must realize the impossibility of capturing on camera film, the beauty of a rainbow. The queen and her court possess not only beauty, stateliness, grace and dignity, qualities ordinarily associated with May Royalty, but in their election demonstrated their ability to sell tickets as it was on this basis that they were chosen. The unbounded applause of the audience as the royal com- pany approached the regal podium assures the repetition of this delightful affair. First Row-T. Jupina, D. Leidich, B. Pavlik, J. School Jazz Band The Oranges, under the direction of Mr. jones have be- come very proficient in the playing of modern swing. This year the organization has stepped out in new uni- forms. These semi-formal mess-jackets of Maroon and White have improved materially the appearance of the Oranges We should not fail to mention their new music stands. These were made by Mr. Holmes to harmonize with the uniforms. The picture above tells you better than can any words of ours, why we are so proud of the Oranges The jazz band plays after basketball games and for many assembly programs. This organization offers any music student a chance to learn to play swing. Several students after gradua- tion have joined orchestras and made music their profession. We hope that the jazz band will continue to turn out students who can choose the music profession as an occupation. gui' Seated-W. Shailron, D. Snyder, S. Scarloss, J, Verhousky. B. Gaddes, A. Both contestants adequately defended their respective theses, reflecting credit on Coaldale High School. We are justly proud of them. Helen was adjudged the winner in the girls' group. MR. T. M. LITHGOW, Coach of Cheerleaders The Cheerleaders This group, composed of six able and willing young ladies who have been members of the squad since their Freshman year, has done a splendid piece ot work in cheering our boys to victory on the gridiron, as Well as endeavoring to encourage and inspire them during a somewhat disastrous season on the court. Under the supervsion ot Mr. Lithgow, these young ladies have been successful in their attempts to arouse the spirit and enthusiasm of the students of C. H. S. For their excellent Work during the past year, the school heartily thanks them. Left to Right: First row-J. Shanosky, J. Shatkowsky, V. Kupec, L. Sicenavage, D. Dally, E. Williams, M. Brown, P. They had nine wins, two ties, and one loss. The season started the first week of September with Saint Clair. Due to inexperience and lack of teamwork, Coaldale was held to a tie. The tigers next played Hazle Township. Scoring in the first quarter on a plunge by Chickie Griffiths, Coaldale held her opponents scoreless and won 6-O. Improving with each game, the tigers, due in large numbers to the excellent playing of Kupec, Pascoe, and Iabbo, beat Lehigh- ton 20-7, and by the slim margins of a point after touchdown beat Mahanoy City and Blythe Township 7-6. OUR GRID WARRIORS Milton Brown David Dally MR. T. P. RAYMER Head Coach CNWARD TIGERS MR S J MARTINEC Assistant Coach Our high hopes ot an undefeated season were rudely shat- tered when we were trimmed by Tamaqua 18-6. Atter this set- back the team worked hard and was rewarded by a victory over McAdoo 7-6, in which Dally scored and the all important point was converted by Sicenavage. Brilliant playing by Slaby and Shatkowsky and exceptional tackling by Martin and Brown re- sulted in tive successive wins. We beat McAdoo 7-65 Nesque- honing l9-U7 Coal Township 26-13: Summit Hill 7-Oy and a highly favored Ashland 26-O. Then came the big game of the year with Lansiord. Snow fell four or five inches deep and the gridiron was slippery with ice. Despite the scrappy playing of Williams, Shanosky, and Kohler the game ended in a scoreless tie. John Griffiths Joseph Kohler Vendal Kupec Paul Martin Richard Pascoe MR R B. HARVEY Facultv Manager With that impressive record the Tigers finished second in the Eastern Conference and first in the Big Four. Through graduation We Will lose the services of Iohn Shat- kowsky, loseph Shanosky, Edward Williams, Leonard Sicen- avage, David Dally, Vendal Kupec, Richard Pascoe, Milton Brown, Paul Martin, Steve Slaby, and Ioseph Kohler.
