Student Cooperati ve ssociation Not until this group was organized did our students know what co- operation and selt-government really meant. The first project that the S. C. A. undertook was a Freshman reception. Other activities they have sponsored are: the booster program, sales at varsity athletic games, dances, the minstrel, the memorial program in memory ot Mr. Horn, and the revision of the Merit and Demerit system. All organizations and home rooms of our school are represented in this body. These representatives take back reports trom the Weekly meetings and bring in problems that confront their organizations or home rooms. The purposes ot this group are: to provide for the betterment of our school and to aid the students in solving those problems which concern them. OFFICERS Harold Partitt .... ...... With a week and a half of practice the boys were all set to play their first game. Our inexperienced line showed signs of Weakness but also promise of future strength. Tony Sachon ran eleven yards through the line to score. The second half was fought without score. The game ended Coaldale 65 St. Clair O. SUMMIT HILL The Maroon and Gold came down the hill on September l7, with practically the same team as the year before. A line plunge by Kozuch scored for the strong Summit Hill lads in the middle of the second quarter. The second half was hard played but scoreless. The Tigers tried hard but lacked the punch at the goal line. The score at the end of the game was: Summit Hill 6: Coaldale 0. MAHANOY CITY September 25 found Coaldale traveling to Mahanoy City to engage the upper coal region lads. During the first half Mahanoy City hit the Tigers line with all they had but failed to score. - At the beginning of the third quarter, a Maroon pass to Coaldale's five yard line paved the way for the first and only touchdown. The extra point was goody so, once again our boys found themselves on the short end of a 7-0 score. ALLENTOWN On October 2, the Tigers, left for Allentown with high hopes of Hplucking the canaries feathers. Allentown scored in the second quarter on a lateral pass and made the extra point good. The Tigers clawed the sod to score when Shotkowsky blocked the home team's kick. The ball landed in l:'lyzik's out- stretched arms. George ran 48 yards to score but the attempt at conversion failed. ln the third quarter the Coaldale boys scored again on a pass play. They missed the extra point which was costly. The Canaries on a fluke end-around play scored before the game ended to win theball game by a score of l3-12. TAMAQUA The undefeated Blue Raiders came over to play the Tigers , on the eighth of October. The game was hard fought, but resulted in a decisive victory for the visitors. This was a hard one to lose but the Orange and Black can find some consolation in the fact that it was Tamaqua's first win from Coaldalesince 1926. The score was l4-O. FRACKVILLE On October l5 Frackville came to town confident of vic- tory. However, Coaldale having taken it on the chin four times in a row were determined to break their jinx. Our boys went into the game with one thing in mind- victory. The pay off came when George Yurgey Lutchkus hit the line for the winning score, 6-O. ASHLAND On October 23 the Tigers hit the road to engage the strong Ashland eleven in its own back yard. The Ashland team scored early in the second quarter but failed at the extra point. In the third quarter the Tigers opened up to show the Ashland boys a few parlor tricks. Our tricky little quarter- back Reyda ran rings around the big boys to tie the score 6-6. NESQUEHONING Cn October 29 the Nesquers came to town with a gang of huskies. At the end of the second quarter a fumble by the Nesque- honing quarter-back gave us the ball on the Maroon and Gold's ten-yard line and on three plays Chickie Griffith, the plucky little Sophomore scored. Earl Shuman converted. The second half was played without score, the game ending 7-U. LEWISTOWN On November 5, our gridsters left home after a grand send-off by the whole school. The Lewistown boys were big and fast. They had many substitutes, a distinct advantage difficult to overcome. Tired from their long ride, our boys, nevertheless went into the battle to give all they had. However, it wasn't enough to overcome the superior weight and speed of the husky Lewis- town lads. The game ended with the score Zl-6, Chickie Griffiths scoring our only points on a pass. SHENANDOAH On November l3 the Blue Devils came to Coaldale with a fighting team, determined to win. They started right in from the first play to batter our forward wall to shreds. At half time the score was l2-0. ln the second half, Griffiths, our tricky little Sophomore full- back, came through the line, evaded the secondary and scored. He also converted. Shenandoah scored again in the last quarter to sew up the game with a score of l8-7. LANSFORD On November 25, Thanksgiving Day, the clash between Lansford and Coaldale took place on Lansford's new field. A capacity crowd of five thousand attended the game. The half ended 7-U in our favor when a long pass from Lutchkus to Reyda was completed. Shuman, Coaldale's husky guard, con- verted the point. During the third quarter l-lorowski plunged over from the Z yard line to score for the red and white. The kick for the extra point was blocked. ln the third quarter a pass from Puss Sicenavage to George Lutchkus made the score l3-6. So ended a successful season. Our team started slowly and suffered several reverses but became better with each passing week. When we beat Lans- ford our season is considered successful, no matter what the results of the other games. Next year's team will feel the loss of the following varsity men: Reyda, Harbolovic, Flyzik, Shuman, Maholic, Tkach, Williams, Lutchkus, l-leisler, labbo, Sachon, and Mitchell who, however, did not play this year. He was a star onlast year's team. MR. MARTINEE MR. RAYMER MR. BERGER h M ,1f m' ' :iff Q' 1 . . ., H! XR ,Q qi'-Q-..,N www' Wm' NL Hmm, 4 as QX M f , fm, i 'L g . The response was excellent and when Coach Raymer called the first practice to order, thirty men were on the floor. This number was, however, soon cut to twenty, which number constituted the squad during the playing season. The boys were confronted with a difficult schedule of eighteen games. This difficulty was increased by the fact that they were handicapped by their size. However, what they lacked in size they amply compensated for by their gameness and endurance. After dropping two league games in the early part of the season, the team was thereafter undefeated in league competition during the regular season. Summit Hll seemed to have the penant cinched with a two and one- half game lead over the local lads who were scarcely conceded a chance to win the flag. r However, in a whirlwind finish, beating Mauch Chunk, Blythe, and Shen- andoah, the Orange and Black tied with the I-fillers for first place. On March 2, the entire student bodies of the two schools, as well as many townspeople, gathered at Liberty Hall, Tamaqua, to see the two league leaders face each other in a final struggle for victory. Unfortunately for us, Summit Hill was in top form and before our boys could start clicking had rolled up a formidable lead. This lead proved fatal to Coaldale's hopes as our basketeers could not overcome it. At all events, the season was an excellent one of which we can well be proud. The l937-38 team will go down in the athletic history of Coaldale High School as one of the very best. Next year's team will sorely miss the playing of Captain Pete Reyda, George Lutchkus, Harold Parfitt, Tony Sachon, and Michael Sidoriak.
