The Students, Cooperative Association Organized in the fall of the l934-35 school term, the Students' Cooperative Association did not begin to carry out its broad program of activity until the present school year. Led by officers who had been elected as follows: Presi- dent, Theodore Berger, Vice-President, Adele Korsakg Secretary, Stella Smarigay Treasurer, Anna Evans, the association proved the real value of a student- governing body. Its first step was to Welcome the Freshmen at the start of the year, and conduct a Get-Acquaintedu party tor them. Other accomplishments were the sponsoring of the football booster program, the conducting of sales at varsity athletic contests, the selecting of a list of assembly programs for the year, the settling of numerous problems brought to its meetings by various home rooms, and the completing of a merit and demerit system. With a firmly established organization assured, as a result of the first year's splendid progress, the Students' Cooperative Association is expected to be the leading means of improving Coaldale High School through education of its student members in proper cooperation for school betterment. A gradual in- crease of responsibility is designed to fit each student for citizenship upon graduation. Y'!1i1'fllCfm'.' XV. l':1rIitt, R,jo1ics, l'. jr-lirics, ID. llulzuisky, ll. l':u'iltt. li. It was on September 3, 1932, that the Class of '36 entered Coaldale High School as Freshmen. It took us several Weeks to become accustomed to the routine of the school. Freshmen though we were, We early became active in the schoo1's activities. This was indicated by the number of l:'reshies who participated in the two Minstrels, and in the Operetta, Chonita. The next year saw the return of a self-important group of students, called Sophomores. During this year a larger number of our classmates were inter- ested in outside activities. Our class was well represented in the annual minstrel, the County Pageant, and athletics. The third year at C. H. S. found the Class of '36 a more experienced and dignified group. We were now upper classmen. Our Iunior Year was an excellent combination of pleasures and hardships. We cooperated in all our activities and were successful in everything we undertook. The outstandng socal event of the term Was our Iunor Prom. After two months of unrestrained enjoyment, the Class of '36 with one hundred twenty-four members remaining, returned to finish its high school career. Our activities commenced soon after our leaders were elected. The musical comedy, lt's a Knockout, and the Senior Play, The Whole Town's Laughing, afforded opportunities to every Senior who was dramatically inclined. Our Class successfully sponsored the Senior Autumn Dance, the Mardi Gras and the highlight of our social season, the Senior Ball. As Graduation draws near, We hope that our future may be as full of fun and work as have been these four successful years at Coaldale High School. Ashmore, F. Baiish, I. Barnovich, M. Barrett, M. Gibhus, THE SEASON Football season rolled around again and with it came the call for candidates. Five lettermen, and thirty-five inexperienced but willing boys answered the call. After a week's hard practice our coach final- ly moulded a team together, and we were ready for action. Our first game was with Coal Township, a night game, which was played away. Our athletes were sur- prisingly strong, defeating them 25-0. Our running and passing attack fea- tured in the victory. A strong and rugged team from F rackville High School was our next opponent. This was a game in which experience meant a great deal. Gur boys were defeated to the tune of 13-O. Frackville used the aerial route, as they were stopped on the goal line consistently by our fighting for- ward wall. Tamaqua was the next opponent for our fast improving team. Playing at home for the second time, we de- feated them l9-0. A bit nervous in the first half after the defeat by F rack- ville, the squad played shoddy foot- ball, but a spirited second half rally netted 19 points. Next, we played Freeland at home. At the conclusion of the game, we found ourselves on the long end of a 21-0 score. We then traveled to McAdoo for a night game. A rough and tough bat- tle it turned out to be. Coming back after a poor start, the team rolled up 19 points in the first half. The final score was 19-6. A fighting, team from Nesquehon- ing surprised us, and we were tied 13-13. Nesquehoning's aerial attack was a strong weapon for them. Our Raymerites had an off day in team work, which almost proved their undoing. Again hitting our stride, we defeat- ed Summit Hill High Schoo1's huskies. They presented a fighting group, but our running attack proved too strong. The final score was 12-2. The following Saturday, Kulpmont High School visited us and we de- feated them to the tune of 32-O. Our substitutes played a major part in this victory. Our next game was an inter- sectional tilt with Lewistown High School, a game in which all the bad breaks of the season seemed to come at once. We were defeated 27-O. Three costly fumbles on our fifteen yard line paved the way for three touchdowns by Lewistown. The other one was gained by a long pass. We outclassed them in first downs, 13-12. Our last and final game of a suc- cessful year was the glorious victory over our arch rival, Lansford High School. Our boys outplayed and out- fought the strong Lansford team. We threatened several times, and at last, after several opportunities, we block- ed one of Lansford's punts. A Lans- ford man recovered the ball, but he was tackled behind his own goal line and we were credited with a safety. This victbry gave us the Carbon- Schuylkill Championship. The final score was 2-O, a well merited Thanks- giving Day victory. Next year's team will miss the stellar performances of such stars as: D. Griffith, Russell Griffith, Robert Griffith, R. Weaver, T. Gaydos, M. Skeerca, I. Pisanic, S. Hlavka, G. Maury, G. Lithgow, A. Harbolovic, I. Paslowssky and F. Burns. 5 Although these stars will be mis- sed, we are sure the 1936 team will uphold the tradition of good, clean, hard football in Coaldale High School. Varsity Basketball Squad Firsl Row: S. THE SEASON Coaldale High School's 1935-36 basketball team with a schedule of twenty-one games played against many veteran quintets, opened the season on December 10 and finished it on February 28, with eleven Wins and ten defeats. Sixth place in the Carbon-Schuylkill League Was our final rating, the lowest in C. H. S. history. Starting the season with a fresh group of candidates, Coach Raymer moulded a fairly successful team which improved as the season prog- ressed. A fitting climax to the season came in the final Week of competi- tion, when the Orange and Black pushers beat White Haven, knocked Lansford High out of the race for league honors and then closed with a victory over Shenandoah High. These three victories in five nights, by a greatly improved team, provid- ed a successful finish. The graduating members of the Varsity Team were Paslawsky, Har- bolovic, Dalto and Petruny. William Novitsky Was the student manager. The members accomplished more dif- ficult feats this year than ever be- fore. The featured exercises were on the flying rings, parallel bars, spring- board and horse, high bar, and mats, all of which were exceptionally inter- esting. By the generous applause of the audience, it was indicated that marching by the Girl's Gym Team was an acceptable phase of the ex- hibition. This year the Gym Team added to its program, two exhibitions away from home. One was given at Weath- erlyp the other at McAdoo. They were held the same day, April 3, 1936. That at McAdoo High School was presented in the afternoon and, the one at Weatherly in the evening. Although the dual work was very trying, it was successful and the splendid receptions in both towns am- ply compensated for the hard work. In fact, the excellent exhibitions at these two towns brought requests from several other towns, anxious to see the accomplishments of the Coal- dale High School Gym Team. The sport carries the possibility of injury at any time, so that the mem- bers of the gym team are to be con- gratulated on their courage. Despite the danger of mishaps, the students demonstrated adeptness in perform- ing difficult feats on the apparatus far above that of the average high school gymnast. Plans are being made to insure the entrance of the gym team, next year, in the P. I. A. A. and the Stroudsburg gym meets. Needless to say, en- trance in these meets and the in- creasing activity of the sport are evidences of the improvement of gymnastic facilities in Coaldale High School. THE SEASON Since the intra-murals have been organized, each year has seen the increased 'growth of these interesting games. The purpose of these games is to strive to create a better feeling toward competitive sport in the high school. The participants are those who do not take part in any varsity sport. The boys' division of the intra- murals consists of two classes, A and B. The girls' division constitutes one class. Any home room section may enter any class. Each class consti- tutes a league. t Basketball tournaments were con- ducted early in the term. These games, played after school hours, proved very interesting to the on- lookers. All games were well con- tested and hard fought. After a few weeks of competition, the 12-B boys emerged victorious in both divisions of the Boys' League, while the Senior Commercial girls were the victors in the Girls' League. Tournaments in volley ball, play- ground ball, and tennis were con- ducted in the early part of the second semester. To further stimulate interest in these games, merits were awarded to those who played in the tourna- ments. One merit was awarded to each player, and five merits to each member of the championship teams. The games were well handled by Mr. Randolph Harvey and Mr. An- drew C. Kalen. The Senior manager of intra- murals was Ted Berger, with Frank- lin Durilla assisting. The function of the extensive intra- mural program is primarily that of directing and stimulating those stu- dents who possess athletic ability as well as creating more interest in the intra-mural sports. The success of the 1935-36 program and the interest manifested by the participants is indicative of increas- ing progress in this branch of sports. Af: . THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Coaldale High School received its charter from the National Honor Society for Secondary Schools at the close of the 1934-35 school term. A permanent organization was effected during the second semester of the following year Membership in theorganization is a distinct honor. The requisites for election to the ,society are based upon achievement in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Only those students who rank in the upper third of their classes are eligible for election. These are elected by a committee of faculty advisors. THE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION BOARD The Coaldale High School athletic board this year achieved improved administration of mat- ters wthin its scope by much needed reorgani- zation of the constitution, and a thorough re- writing of it. New methods of awarding honors in athletic activities, and of selection of cheer- leaders resulted. Made up of representatives of the student body, the board of education and the faculty of the high school, this year's athletic board proved one of the most cohesive and competent bodies of the school. THE IOURNALISM CLUB Since the beginning of the Annual, each year has seen the acquirng of higher awards by the successful staffs of these books. In the first publication the book received honorable mention in the second class. The last edition of our fast improving book, under the supervision of Mr. Keebler, received special award in the first division. The next highest award is the highest that can be bestowed on any year book, that is, All-American. It is our earnest hope that the 1936 Stentor be crowned All-American. THE PRINT CLUB The Print Club consists of a group of students who render valuable service to the high school. Tickets, posters, decorations and the like for the various school activities are artistically de- signed and made by the members. This work provides a worthwhile training in neatness and originality. Each member is encouraged to offer suggestions and thus develop his individ- ual abilities. THE BAND At its annual concert, our band had the honor of playing under the direction of Mr. H. Benne Henton, World famous saxophone soloist and former assistant conductor of Patrick COHWGYIS famous band. The other guest of honor and guest conductor was the Well known Lieutenant Ferd B. Lhotak, bandmaster of the Valley Forge Military Acad- emy and former United States Army band- master. The present members Wish to thank the par- ents Who have contributed a goodly share in promoting the band and sincerely hope that their interest in this splendid organization will continue. The band is indebted to Mr. Horn, who has been its faithful conductor and instructor through all these years. THE ORCHESTRA The Coaldale High School Orchestra, a musical organization of thirty-two pieces, is completing its sixth year under the direction of Professor I. J. Horn. The Orchestra is a very active organization in the school's activities. It has filled the air with music during plays, minstrels and other stage activities. The Orchestra should be thanked especially for the way it has helped to make our dismis- sals orderly and pleasant. THE ORANGE AND BLACK DANCE BAND This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Orange and Black Dance Band, under the present direction of Karl Koch. , Alex Fekula Was the originator of dance bands in the High School. We now have a band of twelve members, which is progressing very rapidly. This organization plays for assemblies and for dances after the basketball games. This year it played for the senior class Mardi Gras. The A. A. and S. C. A. supply donations that keep the band in music. 1 THE A'CAPPELLA CHOIR One of the largest and most promising of our clubs is the A'Cappella Choir. Organized and directed by Mr. Horn, it has proved a great success in that it has greatly increased the quality of Assembly singing. The Choir's participation in the Musical Comedy, lt's a Knockout, held December 15, l935, contrbuted greatly to the success of that revue. THE BAND Firrt Row: J. Hoffman, J. Dalto, J. One of the most discussed topics is the War-like situation in Europe and Asia. The members of the club are taught how to choose a topic, and how to prepare a paper for the discussion of it. The club is under the supervision of Mr. W. E. Berger. THE GENERAL PROBLEMS CLUB This club attempts a solution of various phases of problems not directly touched upon in the classroom. The problems have been selected from a Wide variety of subjects, as: Superstitions and Cults: the Stock and Bond Market: Etiquette for Table, Street and Home: Special Problems in Science: -Appreciation of the World's Greatest Musicp Identification of Musical Instruments in the Orchestra: Words Most Frequently Mispronounced In and Out ot School, etc. The club sponsor is Mr. L. I. Melley. THE GYM CLUB The Gym Club, made up of students keenly interested in the use of apparatus of the gym- nasium for the development of the human phy- sique, has forty members. From this group of outstanding gymnasts, Coach Andrew C. Kalen, director of physical education, selects the leading boys and girls for the varsity gym team. Members of the club are instructed in the use of such apparatus as parallel bars, spring- board and horse, rings, wands, dumbells and mats. THE NEEDLECRAFT CLUB . The main object of the Needlecraft Club is to train girls to be skillful with their hands, to decorate, to ornament and to economize by learning the meaning of A Stitch in Time Saves Nine. THE ART CLUB Pennsylvania's classrooms are perhaps the most influential of all factors in determining the character of the more than two million boys and girls who are attending Pennsylvania's schools. Some of these boys and girls will become crea- tors of art-in fact, many have already achiev- ed national acclaim. All will be appreciators. It proved the most outstanding production in recent years, with two capacity audiences fully appreciative of the excellent dramatic per- formance. Written by Robert St. Clair, one of An1erica's leading playwrights, the play contained a cleverly woven plot and character parts very capably acted by the twelve members of the cast. The play was under the capable direction of Mr. Keebler. IT'S A KNOCKOUTX' A MUSICAL COMEDY Our annual musical comedy this year was under the able management of The Iohn B. Rodgers Producing Co. The show was well chosen, Well presented, and well received. -- Marie Mitchell, as Pattie, played the lead. She was well supported by Iohn Pisanik, the leading man as Bob Randall, Iosephine Kraj- covich as Iosie Randall, and Michael Skeerca as Spike Maloney, the trainer. The show was easily one of the high lights of our school year. We hope our next musical comedy will be as well directed, enjoyed and handled as this year's production. ORATORY Margaret Phillips represented our high school very capably in oratorical competition this year. In the Schuylkill County Forensic League Contests, Margaret placed second with her splendidly delivered oration, Freedom of the Press. In the Panther Valley Oratorical Contest, she received a high degree of praise in the final adjudication. Both contests were held in Coal- dale. THE WHOLE TOWN'S LAUGHING First Rfmu' M. Kohler, M. You will very likely discover that good jewelry and its accessories occupy the place of honor. The passing years leave little trace of gifts that quickly wear out, but jewels, diamonds, personal adornments, watches, precious metalwares, etc., are often passed on into the second or third generation.
