HISTORICAL STATEMENT Coahoma County Agricultural High School was established in 1924 to meet the need of a central high school accessible to all Negro children of Coahoma and adjacent counties. In order to provide even greater educational oppor- tunities for the Negro youth and adults of Coahoma County, the high school curriculum was extended to a junior, or community, college in 1949 with Mr. L. L. Bryson, County Superintendent of Education, spear- heading the movement. 5 g W V Q RETRQQECUON' I S 'cM'en M uurmg its Il'I 1S year of operation the junior college . was supported .by county funds. Later the state legis- lature appropriated funds for the expansion of build- ings and the acquisition of much needed equipment and Coahoma became the first state-supported junior college for Negroes in Mississippi. Mr. B. F. McLaurin who was serving as me fifth superintendent of Agricultural High School, became the first president of Coahoma junior College and Agricultural High School. The college was organized and directed the first three years by Mrs. Zee Ander- son Barron and the first college graduation was held in 1952. J, . In this attractive structure, one will find the offices of the Dean, Registrar, Student Personnel Director and Director of Public Relations and Institutional Development. The building also houses the departments of Science and Mathematics, English, Education, Social Science and Health.
