In order to provide even greater educational oppor- tunities for the Negro youth and adults of Coahoma County, the high school curriculum was extended to a junior, or community, college in 1949 with Mr. L. L. Bryson, County Superintendent of Education, spear- heading the movement. 5 g W V Q RETRQQECUON' I S 'cM'en M uurmg its Il'I 1S year of operation the junior college . was supported .by county funds. Later the state legis- lature appropriated funds for the expansion of build- ings and the acquisition of much needed equipment and Coahoma became the first state-supported junior college for Negroes in Mississippi. Mr. B. F. McLaurin who was serving as me fifth superintendent of Agricultural High School, became the first president of Coahoma junior College and Agricultural High School. The college was organized and directed the first three years by Mrs. Zee Ander- son Barron and the first college graduation was held in 1952. J, . In this attractive structure, one will find the offices of the Dean, Registrar, Student Personnel Director and Director of Public Relations and Institutional Development. The building also houses the departments of Science and Mathematics, English, Education, Social Science and Health. Across the span of years The Coahoman has been dedicated to individuals who have made a distinct contribution to the growth and development of our great institution, The 1969 Staff feel this Anniversary Edition should express our appreciation not to an individual, but to a group. We owe a debt of gratitude to those who have not achieved educational recognition, but who make it possible for education to become a reality - Our Parents. We owe our profoundest thanks to the Efficient, Teachers who have guided us in our educational pursuitsg and we owe sincere appreciation to the loyal persons who have sung the praises of their Alma Mater and shown by example that ours is the best Junior College in the whole system of Junior Colleges - our Alumni. Without the love, sacrifice and dedication of Parents, Teachers, and Alumni there would be no Retrospection - 20 years to sing about, and no Progression - moving forward and onward as the outstanding Poor Man's College in the Mississippi Deltaideveloping Human and Natural Resources. Thus, it is to you: The Unsung Heroes of Education, Our Beloved Parentsg To you Efficient, Dedi- cated Teachers: To you Loyal, Illustrious Alumni that this 1969 issue of The Coahoman is proudly dedicated. The passing years eliminated or modified some of the original needs but brought on new and expanded ones. To meet new and growing challenges the institution's educational program was broadened and extended upward in 1949 to include the junior college grades. For twenty years, then, Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School has sought to offer democratized education to the community it serves on both the secondary and post-secondary school levels. We can look back now and review progress accomplished, re-examine problems solved and yet unsolved, and reassess our worth. We can look at the present and weigh what we are against what we hope to be. And thus from the lessons of the past we can set our goals for the future. It is man's capacity to mentally swing from Retrospection to Progression that sets him apart from other animals. Robert Burns tells the hapless field mouse: Still, thou art blest, compared wi' me! The present only toucheth theeg But, Och! I backward cast my e'e On prospects drear! An' forward, though I canna see, I guess and fear! We look back upon the institution's past with justifiable pride: we look forward to its future with cautious optimism free of fear, Congratulations to the Yearbook Staff for taking a two-way look at CJC and AHS. I ames E, Miller President 1 . . I Eietrnepvrtinn mth ldrugrvsseiun Q ,- -C 4 - ra VV- B. F, MCLAURIN, SR., Former President Coahoma Jr. College and Agricultural High School Coahoma Junior College is a name I can say with great pride because I have been a part of the growth and progress of this great institution - and this is a great institution. The idea of Coahoma Junior College was conceived in 1949 when Mr. L. L. Bryson became Superintendent of Schools. The institution at that time was nothing more than a few frame buildings. Since that time, however, the school has grown into a modern complex of 40 buildings overlooking the beautiful Mackey Lake. In this complex one will find two dining halls, two gymnasiums, one administration building, a library which houses a reading laboratory, three high school classroom buildings, one building which houses a bookstore and grille, three vocational-technical laboratories, three academic classroom buildings, several mobile science, art and trades laboratories, one mobile audio-visual materials center, five student dormitories, and 13 units of faculty housing. Since 1949 we have grown from twenty-two students to nine hundred. I attribute this growth to several factors: the concern and cooperation of the superintendent and school personnel: the dedication of Mrs. Z. A. Barron, the first teacher employed at the college: the provision of bus transportation from Quitman, Bolivar, and Sunflower Counties: and the acquisition of federal funds. The tremendous progress of Coahoma Junior College can also be attributed to the outstanding performance of our graduates, our dedicated and cooperative faculty and staff, and an outstanding athletic department. Although a lack of dormitories has always been our weakest point, this has not hindered the growth of the school. Coahoma Junior College is a great institution. Our increased enrollment has boosted the local economy through purchases at local stores. From this viewpoint, I suppose one can say that Coahoma Junior College is the only black industry in Coahoma County. Economically speaking, Coahoma Junior College is at least 900 pairs of shoes per year and only Heaven knows how many blouses, shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, and sweaters. ln addition to stimulating the local economy: Coahoma Junior College has raised the intellectual status of people all over the nation. It is important that we recognize the common denominator of the Philsophy of Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School, More efficient use of Human and Natural Resources, in our endeavors to meet the challenge of change. While the concept of the need for education is not new its form is ever evolving. It Must Change To Meet Change. This change should not be interpreted as down grading the importance of the established practices of good behavior, hard work with the hands, the head and the heart. It should be interpreted as a signal for our administrators, teachers, and students to take well-planned, intelligent action on imple- menting the responsibilities each has to the other, the school, and the community. The continued growth of C.I.C. and A.H.S. will rest on the premise that no administrator, teacher, or student can abrogate his responsibilities. Since the challenge of change is with us, let it be known that we are ready to accept our obligations to meet the change. A xk Q S :ix 1 - lm CHEVO-WAGON In automotive mechanics and design, imagination and ingenuity are high on the list of pre- rogatives for young men aspiring to become professionals in this lucrative field. In keeping with the demands for well trained young men, Mr, Artis Ferguson, Mr. Blake and students of the A, H. S. auto mechanics class embarked on a challenging project. They built a customized Chevrolet truck by combining various parts of a 1957, four-door Chevrolet pick- up truck into a thoroughly integrated design containing modern features and many new ideas in automotive artistry. This project is called the Chevo-Wagon. The idea derived from an economic situation where the shop budget could not afford a new truck. Staff members of the shop decided to build a truck and make it a class project. A tre- mendous amount of work was clone by the class in order to complete the project. The fellows and the instructors have reason to be proud of their Chevo-Wagon. Mr. Blake has plans for sending photos and technical information on this project to various trades journals dealing with customized automobiles. In prognosis for the year, Mr. Blake informs us that, not only will students deal with cus- tomizing, they will deal with all phases of automotive repairs. , Qgirlz' Qflaw , m,,,,..,j amswrwm.+sf:sx::,s..s.x1w:.rssse. : sf s 9 as Q 9' Y Qb . 1 1 L, Girls' College P. Catchings CJC Aids In Developmenr Of Human Resources Agricultural mechanization in the Delta area has forced many manual labor fanning operations into obsolescence. Coupled with mechanization on the farm is automation in industry. Although the delta is not primarily an industrial center, industrial development is on the increase. This gives rise to the need for retaining a great percentage of the labor force which finds a pgrowine number of pmemployed among its ranks. a The manpower retraining pprogram in this area, with ltraining headquarters at Coahoma lar. College and A. H. s., seeks to alleviate the problems of employment of unskilled workers in a mechanistic and automated lsociety. In part, this is our contribution to the community, in keeping with our philosophy 'of developing human resources. Administrative and instructional personnel of the Manpower Development and Training Program in the Coahoma County area are, Mr. Samuel A. Cummings, supervisor, Miss Marilyn Hatchett, secretary, Miss J. L. Brown, bookkeeperg llMrs. Marylin Weeden, Counselorg :AML Chester Harville, instructor Hin farm equipment mechanics, 7Mr. A. W. Mooney, instructor in 'fweldingg Mr. Charlie Pittman, kinstructor in woodwork and imachine operation, and Mr. Donnie Carpenter, instructor in production machine operation. In recent interviews with Mr. Samuel A. Cummings, supervisor of the manpower program in this area, it was learned that this program grew out of The Manpower Development and ,Training Act of 1962. Its basgl lpurpose has been to locate ipersons who are unemployed or funderemployed, to identify their 'abilities and interests, to give training in knowledge and skills necessary for employment, and ,to provide subsistence during the training period. Mr. Cummings was emphatic in pointing out the fact that the MDTA calls for a cooperative effort on the part of many agencies. In our state, the cooperating agencies are the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, the Division of Vocational-Technical Education of the Mississippi State Department of Education, and several local educational agencies including Coahoma Jr. College. Mr. Cummings let it be .known that it was of special importance that the community knows that establishment and operation of training programs are handled at the community level by local people. A capsule outline of how the program works is as follows. The trainee is screened, selected, and referred to MDTA projects for occupational training by Employment Security Commission. He then spends two week periods of Orientation wherein his aptitudes and abilities are analyzed. He is then channeled into training in Farm Equipment Machinery, Welder-Combination, Woodwork and Machine Operation, or Production Machine Operation Success in these areas depends largely on how well the supervisor and instructors cope with the student's problems such as job interest, background, health, education, integrity, emotions, temperament, home-life, ambition, financial status, and working experiences. Mr. Cummings feels that there have been many achievements since the inception of this program in 1967. The most important achievement is that the program has produced many useful and purposeful citizens. The first session of the program 143 females and 217 males entered training. The drop-out rate for the first session was 7 females and 28 males, and the employment rate was 48 females and 127 males. H -a I 1 2 This shows an employment rate in : of about 6096 which Mr. ' Cummings feels is very good for : a pilot project. - Since June 1968, the : beginning of the current training : session, 59 trainees have been E enrolled, with no drop-outs. Out : of the 59 enrolled, 13 have I already ,become employed due to E early completion of training. Mr. Cummings was very 45 optimistic about future plans. On lf: the drawing board for the E immediate future is coupled program of occupations, and on the job training, where the C-Z : trainee will spend 4 hours in Qzf E training and 4 hours on the job. : Along with this projected plan E there is a pre-vocation, and a ' - basic adult education program. E The Tribune feels that this In program is an integral part of the educational community and ooks forward with keen atinticlpation for further news roam this area.B Frank M I O 3 E .E ng - - E , ... On many occasions I met with disappointment, but more often with plenty of hard work. Now that this experience is concluded, I find myself deeply saddened, It is my sincere hope that the effort put forth by the COAI-IOMAN'S Staff will not be in vain, but that all Coahomans will take great pride in this our '69 COAHOMAN. As editor my responsibilities were many, but the interest and untiring support of my co-workers greatly lightened my duties. Should this COAHCMAN not reach the qualifications of the COAHOMANS gone before, its shortcomings lie solely with the editor. Many thanks to all of you who sacrificed that this annual might be published. CHARLES M. JOHNSON, Editor-in-Chief O ':mM 'Pvl Sekaof ow-wg, 'H f x jx. Ll X X x 4512.4 1,5 it Etswvnbhg uf?
