Their lives are molded by many hands - the hands of teachers, the hands of administrators, the hands of parents. Some of our C.J.C. graduates are Senior College bound, some may terminate their edu- cation and descend on the business world, but no matter what the choice may be, their future lives are a direct result of their days at C.J.C. and knowledge gained from experiences here. We salute such a person in our 1968 Yearbook, You have spent long hours each year helping us to make our Yearbook - a thing of beauty and also to meet our deadline. You have used your creative talent to decorate our campusg to advertise our school on posters, signs and bulletin boards. You have helped us materially by selling tickets and policing our games. You have inspired students to major in art and use their creative talents to beautify and brighten their dull drab environments. You have been a real Coahoman. You have set an example of true Christian manhood by serving as soldier, civic leader, church officer and just plain laborer making an honest dollar - For all of these things and because we love you not only as teacher, but as a dear friend - We dedicate this 1968 Coahoman to you - Thomas W. Luxury and Comfort Dear Students, Alumni, and Friends: The 1968 Coahoman chronicles another chapter in the continuously unfolding Coahoma story. It is the story of young learners acquiring knowledge, developing skills, molding at- titudes, and sharing experiences which will enable them to influence the shape of events of today and tomorrow. Because of its total dedication to the task of developing the leadership qualities of its students, Coahoma Junior College and AHS constantly seeks new and better ways to improve its program of instruction. New buildings, new equipment, new materials, new faces, new techniques, new ideas--these arethe ingredients which, when blended with the best of the old, will facilitate and accelerate learning for leadership. We congratulate the yearbook staff for the excellent work-done in preparing this edition of the Coahornan. James E. Miller President B. F. Your 1968 yearbook theme Learning for Leadership means, we believe that all Coaho- ma Jtmior College students are capable of becoming, growing, learning and developing. We believe also that for this goal to be attained the faculty must be committed to self examina- tion and change, and the students and the faculty must be involved in the decision making processes that affect learning and leadership development. This type of interaction on the part of faculty and students provides opportunities for them to explore ideas, feelings, values and opinions, thereby helping students discover what is basic in the development of leaders in a democracy. I am proud of the fact that you have shared in decision making while working on this publication, and that you have worked hard to make this a learning and leadership activity which has contributed to your personal development. Mary G, Whiteside 57 mzbzkfrabbn 'haf' MR. MARION M. REID Registrar To the Members of the Annual Staff: I congratulate you on putting together another beautiful edition of The Coahoman . To the Student Body: Many of you have made me feel very proud of your academic achievements here at Coahoma Junior College this year. A total of 879 were enrolled during the Fall and Winter Quarters, and with the additional applications on hand for the Spring Quarter our total for the year will probably exceed 900. Of the more than 500 Freshmen enrolled for the Fall Quarter, 84 made the Honor Roll, and of the more than 300 Sophomores, 40 made the Honor Roll. We are very proud of this academic achievement of these fine young people and hope that this is an incentive to greater accomplishments. To those of you who are leaving us this year, may we see you again soon, as you return to visit and relive for a moment some of the happiest days of your lives . Marion M. We have witnessed the growth of the Annual since the first publication in 1957. The Foreword of the first edition stated We are endeavoring in this book to show through pictures and words the growth of Coahoma. Each succeeding edition has con- tributed to this objective by the introduction of new pictures and different words. Very few of the early leaders and teachers of this institution are still with us. How ever, the lofty ideals and fine qualities implanted in the lives of our early students are reflected by many of these students who comprise a large segment of our present teach- ing staff. It is our hope that these young people will grasp the zeal for that which is good for our students and the institution. Zeal for the public good is the characteristic of a man of honor and a gentleman, and must take place of pleasures, profits, and all other pri- vate gratifications. Secretary COAI-IOMA JUNIOR COLLEGE Manpower Development and Training Program Because of the limited employment opportunities for the unskilled people in this im mediate area, we are seeking to expose many of these people to a variety of occupational knowledge and to train them in specific skills so that they may become gainfully employed This occupational training will substantially help to decrease the number of longterm unemployment and low income families who without this training the prospects for employ ment would be severely handicapped because of the demand for skilled labor to operate the more powerful and up-to-date machinery that farm and industry are employing. The program not only concentrates on academic achievements and skills required for a particular job, but is geared toward providing adequate training on the personal aspects relating to social and employer acceptance such as grooming, personal cleanliness, the employer-employee relationship, work habits and attitudes, and both personal and public relations which will have a direct bearing on their eventual obtaining and retaining em ployment . Black, a Detroit barber, may not bend his customers ear with idle chatter, but he could easily sing his way into your heart. Once again, the 30-year- old baritone captured top honors in the Rose Bowl Alumnae competition in Chatham, Ont. during the annual Kiwanis music festi- val which ended this month. Two years ago, the gifted artist, who lives at 657 Blaine, won first-place certi- ficates in three categories: German Lieder, oratorio and operatic. B1ack's background is em- bued, with music. Following, his graduation from high school in his na- tive Clarksdale. Miss., he was awarded a musical scholarship and was an hon- orary graduate of Coahoma Junior college where he played first trumpet. -vb Y 'V Y s,.,,.....,-,, ai o JAMESBLACK Black came to Detroit in 1956, attended Wayne State university where he was a member of the choir for one year under the direction of Harold Tallman. He was, from 1959-62, a featured soloist with the Philharmonic chorus and the Great Lakes choir and has appeared with the Detroit Opera Theater and the De- troit Civic Opera company. Not surprisingly, Black wants to be a concert singer and it may have been an understatement when two of the judges at the festival told him, You are a fine artistf' , l tvrvin Hogan, 5 ,.Q., l9oC Siunselor ,ieignborhoot south Corp.
