V A Y A There are individuals who live and work quietly and un-assumingly: yet exert tremendous in- fluence upon the lives of others. Such is true of the Counselor of C. J. C. and A, H, S. She has given willingly, freely and unselfishly of her time, talents and means to help improve our total school program. She has led out in every drive, contest, literary activity, club and P,T,A. program which the school has fostered. Yet she has found the extra strength and time to work assiduously in Church and Civic organizations in the community. In fact, you find her - Where the Action is. Because of the above facts, and because of your firm but kindly manner of teaching: of your ability to understand and help us solve our problems: of your wise counsel and guidance, you have not only been chosen Star Teacher of Coahoma Agricultural High School but, also, honoree of the 1967 Coahoman. Because you have been so creatively active as a Mother, Community Citizen, Counselor, Teacher and Friend, we proudly dedicate the 1967 Coahoman to you: Mrs. Jimmy Ray Hill. 4 D I IST El F CULTY i ,R ig-uv-j91vAToRg0f' S ACT!0'N' 3 ,.-. . Action is the doing of something. It is the effecting of an alteration. It is enterprise. It is deeds. It is conduct. It is behavior. Its connotation is that of a continuing process over a period of time rather than that of a single momentary happening or act. Hence, it is the substance which gives rise to the character of men and of the institutions that serve mankind. The actions in which Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School has been engaged have cast its image. The demonstrated concern of capable instructors for the in- tellectual growth of their students has given the institution the reputation of being a center of teaching excellence. The cordiality exhibited among students as well as among faculty and staff members has established the institution as a place of friendliness. The success of its athletic teams and its other competitive groups has caused Coahoma to be known as the home of pace setters. Its continually expanding facilities, its enlarged student body, its broadened and enriched curriculum, its strengthened faculty, its constant search for new and better ways to serve - these have made Coahoma a place of growth. The dynamic spirit which pervades the institution portends for it a brighter and a more glorious future. And this shall come to pass, for this is where the action is. James E. W 'V During the February 1966 Board Meeting of the Board of Trustees for Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School, Benjamin Franklin McLaurin, Senior submitted his resignation as President of the College he has guided since its conception. Meanwhile, he promised to stay on with the institution in a capacity that would be less taxing. This was a voluntary move dictated by his physical condition at that time. Mr. McLaurin has been more to CoahomaJunior College than an administrator and we believe Coahoma Junior College has been more to the McLaurin family than an educational institution. lt has been a home for Mr. and Mrs. McLaurin and their two, Q25 sons, B. F. McLaurin, Jr., Baby Mac , and Johnny McLaurin. The McLaurin children were always campus favorites. They made so many feel so close to the McLaurin family. In fact it has been a campus family for all of us as both Mr. and Mrs. McLaurin have taken a parental interest in students and provided them with everything from food and cash money to items of clothing. Aside from Mr. McLaurin's attainments as a school administrator, he has proven to be a successful businessman and a true friend of the community. The above is attested by the fact that he was chosen as a member of the Clarksdale Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Executive Committee of the local Community Action Program. iz 92010149 CICZZICIQ Qui-sv B. F. MCLAURIN, JR, JOHNNY W, MCLAURIN lst LI. U. S. Army Although retired from the office of President, Mr. McLaurin is far from inactive. He still has an active obligation to the school and is just as concerned about its welfare as always. Mrs. McLaurin remains a dedicated Home Economic's teacher in the High School Department. Their sons are both presently in foreign countries. Baby Mac is a First Lieutenant serving in Viet Nam. He received both his Bachelors' and Masters' Degrees from Kansas State University before entering the Army. Johnny is now working on his Masters' Degree in Switzerland where he is an exchange student. He received his Bachelors' Degree in Mathematics from the University of Kansas. MISS MAEREAN JONES, Secretary Your theme, Coahoma--Where The Action Is , points up the need for us to look backward critically into the growth and development of the college. This backward view would show that Coahoma Junior College came into being because Super- intendent L. L. Bryson, President B. F. McLaurin, and other responsible citizens of the community were active in pointing up the need for an institution which would up-grade the in-service teachers in the Delta Area and would provide two years of junior college work for students who would find the cost of living away from home beyond their means. . The fact that since 1949 most of the 720 graduates have completed college and some the univer- sity, and are now assuming leadership roles in administration, teaching, and community programs both in and out of Mississippi is evidence ofthe reliability of their judgment and the success of their efforts. Another significant fact may be observed in the continuous growth in enrollment from 22 students and one full-time teacher, Mrs. Zee A. Barron, in 1949, to 801 students and 37 administrators and teachers at the end of the 1967 Winter Quarter. This enrollment increase naturally necessitated growth and expansion in the curricula offerings to meet the needs of the students. But, Coahoma Junior College will also make a forward look hopefully to a period of group de- cisions which will determine what judgments the faculty, citizens, and students will make in order that its procedures .or actions will best meet the needs of people in our ever expanding community. This naturally places great responsibility on Coahoma Junior College if it is to develop to the fullest its human and natural resources - an objective stated in the school's catalog. Qean 'J Wfessaye It is our expectation that Coahomans will be healthy, literate, loyal, creative citizens, dedicated to sound values, and capable of solving problems in the major areas of living. You have been active in a worthwhile project which shows through words, pictures and deeds that you have the determination and ability to succeed in life. May I congratulate you: the teachers, and students who have provided this action report of the college. Mary G. Whiteside Weyzkfrar 'J Wessaye -F 'bil f J' wg , 1- 2 .r 'Ur .....,, mm, 4. I s. . MRS. IEQLDLL rrr, L or l CJC Jumps To First In Ratings Utica Second ln Weekly Stats Coahoma Junior College has jumped into the offensive lead in the Region Seven weekly sta- tistical roundup, according to CJC Athletic Director, George Green. Through five games, the Ti- gers were averaging 106.8 points per game and were un- beaten in five outings. The only other team in the region averaging in three figures was Utica Junior College which was posting a 102.8 point-per-game figure. Utica was 8-0. Ironic Twist An ironic twist was noted by Green as he pointed out that Utica, which ranked second to Coahoma in regional statistics, is rated eighth in the nation in total offense, according to fig- ures released Thursday by the National Junior College Athletic Association QNJCAAJ. According to the NJCAA, Uti- ca's 102.8 average through five games hasn't been recorded by the national bureau. The only thing I can see that would make a difference is the fact that Utica has played three' more games than we have, Green said, adding that the Ti! gers will probably be rated na- tionally next week. f Games Since i The Tigers have played three games since the ratings were recorded, winning them all sending their record to 8-0. They defeated Mobile State Junior College twice, 123-78 last week and 99-80 Wednesday night for their most recent win. Sand- wiched in between was a 137-89 lashing of Mississippi Industrial College freshmen. These three games have raised the Tigers average to 111.6 points per game, while the eight opponents have been able to average only 75.4 per game. Region Seven includes teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Ten- nessee and Mississippi. Coahoma Junior College won a lopsided 121 to 48 victory over Arkansas Baptist College of Little Rock, Arkansas, here Saturday night. It was no con- test for the Tigers who by half- time had a comfortable 59 to V29 lead.
