y7res1bf212f19 J essays? Coahoma Junior College announced its opening in September, 1949 with a class of 22 students. It has established itself in the view of many educators and observers as one of the most formidable weapons in the arsenal of the war on ignorance. This year the college is striving to teach more than 750 college students to learn to live together. There is sense, perhaps, in what the most practical aspect of what the college strives to do through its teachings as a communitygtoinculcate within students a spirit of service - man to man and man to society and governmentg to help students learn to live calmly amid the tensions of the modern world: to see all human relations as a challenge toward more humane and moral behavior: and to seek for themselves in the midst of problems and pressures a kind of serenity and personal poise that will make them of the greatest possi- ble service to mankind. The changes taking place in education in the south are a logical part of the overall change in the general educational economy of the world. Education is being regarded as a highly essential production tool. The economics and.techniques of it are given more careful consideration than ever before. New education materials and application techniques are being carefully appraised. Because of this challenge a new breed of student has emerged - a breed made up of men with plenty of ability and enough guts and whatever else it takes to be successful. Out of this midst and through the walls of Coahoma Junior College have come teachers, lawyers, ministers, doctors, nurses, tradesmen and many other fine responsible American citizens. 3

9jres1k12f's yyzpessaye The Federal Programs have provided funds for the construction of facilities and for the support of educational programs in many fields. All the opportunities for student growth and development, and the many student aids came as a result of the administration's desire to bring to our students the financial benefits made possible by our state, local and federal pro- grams. The National Defense Student Loan and the Work-Study Programs have meant much in that students of limited financial means are provided assistance to attend college as well as to the students who have not been raised in an environment where college going was a normal and almost inevitable destination. More important it has brought a strong partnership between education and the states which has been a long time coming, but is now apparent that education is the child of politics - not the politics of deals and maneuvers but politics of compassion, of social justice, of principle and of American progress. Through these pro- grams the unusual promise of the intellectually potential, of the academic financially handi- capped, and the inadequate environmental college student has been discovered. It is true that all students will not look toward the university as an immediate objective. After one or two years of experience in a junior college, students may enter the labor market full time. These programs have made education beyond the high school level available to all who want to benefit by it. Our next important task will be to bring honor to our institution and the students by meeting standards set up by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools which will qualify our institution to become a member in the very near future. However, the goals and functions of the college are evaluated regularly in the light of tomorrow's needs so that students may appreciate its offerings. There is no foolproof preparation for the future, no individual can afford to enter the working world today without having trained him- self to the fullest extent of his own capabilities.
