Dean's Message Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School through its program has recognized the wide range of abilities, aptitudes, and interests of its students, and has focused its curriculum on those real- istic experiences which develop leadership abilities, responsible citizenship, critical thinking, crea- tivity, and adequate self directed, fully functioning personalities. The faculty believes that an environment in which students and teachers constantly strive to im- prove human relations can contribute to academic competence in their areas of specialization and in a broad range of general knowledge. The values which students gain here will have a continuing effect on them as they make choices which will determine their future, and the future of the communities in which they live and work. I congratulate the staff of the l963 Coahoman for bringing these experiences into Focus through words and pictures, This yearbook will enable us to evaluate the program and reset our future goals. V -lr Presidentgs Message College is America's best friend. America has assumed a position of leadership in the free world. This, together with the complexity of our times, calls not only for highly trained spe- cialists but also demands leaders with broad knowledge and deep understanding. The dollars we invest in the education of our youth today will be our best assurance of America's tomorrow. With each generation more Americans want more education for their children. lt is our estab- lished ideal that each student should be able to climb upward through every educational level to the limit of his own capacities. There are nearly '700 two-year junior colleges in the United States. Seventeen of these are public, tax assisted institutions of Mississippi. The other 9 are privately or denominationally controlled. These 26 junior colleges admit 15010 of the students of our state. This system of private and public junior colleges has led to a healthy competition for academic excellence and has produced vigor in higher education which is vital to continued strength and growth. If higher education is to be adequately financed in the future, income from all sources must be increased. Students and their parents will be asked to pay more, and with the vigorous expansion of our economy, this seems reasonable. Legislators and School Boards will be asked to vote increased funds, and taxes will provide the margin of difference. The vital issue which we face at Coahoma Junior College is not how many students we will educate - but Q jill E educate E-11211-. We must provide quality education at all times and at any cost. More and more, junior colleges are evaluating and reviewing their current Vocational Ed- ucation Programs and Coahoma is no less charged with some of these responsibilities. We take an active interest in the changing world of work as it affects our youth. We shall strive to: fly Offer training opportunities to the junior college students who will enter the labor marketg 423 Provide training or retraining for these students and workers whose jobs will disappear due to mechanization or economic changer QBJ Meet the critical need for highly skilled craftsmen and technicians through education and training beyond the high school levelg my Make education and training equally available to all, regardless of sex, place of residence or age. Our advanced vocational education program demands that we prepare many more technicians and skilled craftsmen for employment in industry, business, agriculture and health services. Others must be prepared for service occupations and homemaking. Some Junior Colleges have left the vocational field to other schools and denied their tech- nically inclined students the benefits of this program. Is there another alternative? Yes. There is the Coahoma Junior College Program which includes broad general education and vocational technical education. Why not focus your at- tention on Operation Coahoma Junior College ?
